People 3 concerts with the k-x

Hey all,
been awhile since I've posted anything, but September has been a good month for concerts. Got to see 3 bands and brought my trusty k-x with me.
Most of these shots were approximately f/2.8, 1/80 & ISO1600 (seems to always be a good setting for me).

What I love about this camera is not only the performance at high ISOs but that it's so small (especially with the 50mm attached). For the first two shows, I told the bouncers that it was a point and shoot and they were convinced. After inspecting my camera, I actually heard one bounce say to another "I'm getting better at telling the difference between regular cameras and SLRs"

Anyways here are some of my favourite pics. Open to C&C.

Marina & the Diamonds

Dirty Projectors
Had to process these photos with a sort of heavy vignetting effect cause I was always shooting in between people's heads. I actually kinda liked how they turned out.

Thanks for the response and for checking!

Yes the problem only seems to be in wireless mode. When it's mounted on the camera everything seems to be working fine.
I thought maybe the camera and flash weren't aligned so they couldn't communicate, but i've actually lined them up right in front of each other and tried and no flash went off. Really not sure what is causing the problem.

Hi I was shooting with my AF-540FGZ wirelessly the other day and suddenly, the flash stopped working (no longer discharged the flash but the menus were still working).

I tried again today (wirelessly) and it was working for a bit before I ran into the same problem. My ready lamp (test/modeling) is blinking red when wireless. however, when I mount the flash onto my camera, the light turns solid (no longer blinking).
Wondering if anybody has ran into this problem before?

Thanks!

Went to see MGMT yesterday and brought the k-x with me. They ran through all but one song off their new album and played around 4 or 5 off their previous. It was a great performance but had some difficulty getting a good view for pics but these were my favourite from the night. The photos were taken at ISO 1600-2000 and f/2.8.

Thanks! I know what you mean after I loaded the shots on to my computer, I was thinking "ahh i wish i got the lower portion of his body and the bass guitar in the silhouette". Everything happens so fast that I didn't have too much time to compose the shot as well (full body), also I had to shoot over some guys head in front of me lol

Thanks. Some of the shots didn't turn out as well, but those will never see the light of day! :)

Earlier this week I posted a set of photos that I took at a concert and they were not the sharpest. Got a chance to go to a show tonight and test out the k-x again. This time, the results were better. Shot these photos with a 50mm (did some cropping in PP), F/2.5 - 2.8 and varying ISOs between 1600-2600. I think one of the main reasons these images turned out sharper were because I was closer to the performers and the lighting was better making the camera able to pin point what I was focusing on (I'm too slow with manual focusing, so I use auto). The band is called Land of Talk and these were some of my favourite pics of the night.

People First concert shots with the K-X

Thanks for looking into that. It kinda sucks that the k200d is still sharper at ISO 800...cause in a lot cases (concerts) i might be able to manage with ISO 800. However, the K-x is significantly smaller and would perform better if i need ISO 1600-3200.

Yeah I really love the K200D. It's such a solid and quality camera. I got the K-x for concerts, but convinced my brother to sell off his Canon Rebel and shoot with the K200D (didn't take too much convincing lol) cause it was such a great camera.

hmmm not sure maybe i'll give that a shot and see what happens. I've heard and seen such great high ISO shots with the K-x, so I'm convinced that I'm not using it to the best of it's capabilities either with the camera or in PP.

The cameras were set on a table. Both used the same lens (50mm f/1.4) and same ISO, aperture and shutter speed. I was kind of shocked at the results. If i'm taking a picture of something relatively close, the K-x seems to give out some pretty detailed pictures. If the subject gets further the details begin to get lost. For the concert, I was closest to the drummer and as a result, I got some good detailed shots of the drummer. The other two members of the band were far away (I cropped the shots so they seem closer than they actually are) and in a lot of the pictures, you can't really make out their facial features. =/

not necessarily. I just did a comparative shot with the two cameras and these were my results. Both were set at ISO 800, 1/60, F/2.8. I even scaled down the the k-x photo to match the k200D. Both have not been processed and these are 100% crops.

k-x

k200D

To me the k200D seems sharper =/
When i was processing the concert photos, I noticed a lot of details were gone (facial features & hair) and I don't remember it being as bad with the k200d. Not sure if it something i've set up wrong.

Hey all,
I love going to concerts and taking photos, so the k-x seemed like the Pentax camera to go with (i was using the K200D before). I went to see a band called Beach House last week and these are some of my favourite shots from the night. I was shooting between 1000-1600 ISO and at an aperture between F/2.0 - 2.8.

Side note: my pictures don't seem to come out as sharp with the K-x compared to the K200D. I'm thinking it's a problem with me, as opposed to the camera. If anyone's got any tips please let me know =)

Thanks for the quick replies!
I checked and you guys are completely right, I found the info right in my K-x manual!

* For those who were wondering, on the K-x it's "17. Flash in Wireless Mode" on the Custom Setting menu, that will let you control this function.

Wireless without built-in camera flash

Hey all,
I just recently got a AF 540 flash and I've been playing around a bit. I noticed that if I am using wireless mode, that the flash will only go off if the on-camera flash is popped up (making it go off as well). I was wondering if it is possible to just have the wireless flash fire without the on-camera one.
I'm using a k-x body.

Thanks

Hey all,
it's been awhile since I've posted anything but I just got back from a concert (The Kills, The Horrors and Magic Wands). Thought I'd share some of the better photos of the night. Lighting conditions weren't too great but I tried my best lol. All these photos were taken at ISO 1600 and I used 35mm and 50mm primes (mostly the 50mm cause I needed the speed).
On a side note, People all around me were moshing, pushing and shoving. I truly believe if it was any other camera, that it would have broken but Pentax are just such solid cameras!

thanks for the comments. These, of course, are probably the best shot of the night. The pictures I didn't post weren't as successful haha

i was using a 50mm lens at an ISO of 800 and a did do some PP to colour correct and sharpen.

Hey all,
went to a concert last week and it was the first time I actually tried to take some pics. I messed up a lot of good photo opportunities, mainly cause I overexposed to the point of no recovery :D but I still managed to grab a few decent shots (I think).

Also, hate to say it but, I hate other photographers! haha it's a half joke but there was 2 other photographers in front of me and every time the guitarist and bassist got close together all I saw in my viewfinder were the 2 photographer's arms and cameras :hmm: needless to say, I couldn't get a good group shot!

Anyways, I'm heading to another show in early Feb, so any feedback/suggestions would be great!

hey lihang,
thanks for sharing your views on post processing and more importantly, photography!
I agree with you views and I hope that I did not offend you when I asked about post processing. The fact that you did apply PP techniques does not devalue your photos or ability at all.
I'm currently a graphic design student and am all for PP (as long as it's not over-done) :D
Needless to say, your photos turned out excellent and I look forward to seeing more of your photos in the future!

thanks for the kind words of encouragement!!!

JCSullivan: the 2 photos i think it may be a resizing issue that's making the sign and text look a little off and unfortunately I restrung my guitar so I can't try out different shots with the broken string. But it's only a matter of time before I break another haha
