contemplating a purchase of da300..

I'll rephrase the question.
i just walked by my usual camera store & they have a nikon 300 F4 + TC 1.4 for sale for only 600 euros, 6mnths garantee. Add a rebated nikon apsc with it & its a pretty sweet deal.

Assumption what the internet says is true, namely AF for this kind of thing being much better than pentax.. ??

there is this youtube video with a guy testing a 150 450 (cameraville). It doesn't seem too big imo. Probably the weight is the issue here..

that is the nikon 200 500. About the same weight. Not that much bigger but 'fatter' it seems. Believe the filtersize is 95 or so..

nice shot though...

guess you felt it wasn't difficult enough yet to get a nice shot of a bird. So you brought two dogs?? :-)

thank you for some great directions here.
Allthough, i'm still undecided ;-)

I really feel for the da300 & tc. It is indeed best compromise on weight, iq, wr,.. and maybe it would just be a good start & see how i go from there.
I don't feel the 150 450 to be too expensive (don't get me wrong though) , but it is indeed another categorie in terms of weight and size. But maybe for what i want to do, i should go with a tripod or monopod anyhow.

I am a bit wary though about spending a lot of cash on a speciality lens such as the 150 450, with pentax. A nikon 200 500 would sell easier eg if one wants to sell it.. the DA300 & TC is not really a speciality lens to me.
I've been thinking about travel also, but i'll take that out of the equation. The da 55 300 will do that.. It is indeed a good telelens, espec for travel. It has served me well already.

All the other options offered are also under consideration. But i have to do some homwork.

The below website has some pics of the place real close to where i live. I've seen great specimens there. But these are really not your backyard birds and they are not tame at all.. That is why i am unsure the da300 & even tc will do.
Also, there is a lot of water. Forget about technique for getting close ;-) well, to some extent..

Look,
I want to try out birding.

So, first things first, i need a telelens & want to find out whether a da300 will match my expectations.

There are other options, such as 150-450, a nikon body with 200 500 (friends tell me to just get a nikon for this..) or e.g. a fuji xt2 with 100-400 lens. These options all go beyond the 2000euro mark. Hec, i'm not even sure to what extent i'll like it or how much time i will want to devote. That is where the da300 comes in. with the converter it would cost about 1400euros

I have a 55 300. Walking around in a nearby bird reserve, i noticed 300 does not really cut it. However, spending some time checking pics from the da300, i have the impression one can crop a lot before losing details, quite a lot. I have a K3 btw..
So in that sense, i'd expect another kind of 300mm than with my 55 300. Correct or nonsense??

I'm aware of the HD 1.4 converter. But i want to find out whether i will be pleased with cropping possibilities without the converter.

Or if anyone feels i should really directly aim for the higher stuff? (you know, better chance of keeping up with learning the guitar when having a good guitar to begin with..)

All opinions appreciated..

In all fairness, i did get some profit on the gbp/eu rate on the da17-70. If i would recalculate at the rate where it was before you know what.., i'd come around 250 (incl shipping)..
Anyone doubting over the da17 70, i will say that it is a very nice lens.

just fyi, i recently bought the first two lenses 2ndhand for almost a third cheaper (euros), in excellent condition. So yes, your prices seem a bit high to me. They are worth it, no question about that.

How good is the K-01 for video shooting?

I sold it once i had the K3. Found K3 video to be far better & i expect your kp to also be far better.

The k01 with a lens is indeed still big & heavy as well. If you plan to get it anyhow.. ok, but i would't recommend to buy it especially for the video department, you may as well use the kp.. Handheld is an issue, you are aware i guess.

For casual shooting, it does handle rather nicely though.

Pull sharpness/contrast/saturation down a bit in whatever profile you wish to use.
Focus manually or AF before each shot.
Use a tripod or monopod.
Disable SR
If you want to do it correctly, use 24or30fps & your shutter at 1/50 and keep iso low. Outside this would probably require ND filters.. So you could just ignore & have the camera choose its settings..
Use the best lens you have.

As Adam mentioned, it will do the job. You can be your own judge regarding the quality.

I just checked some original photographs & seems the vignet with stepup & one ND filter is hardly noticable (mind you, i use a step up ring to 58mm as i bought filters to fit my fa31).
Some photos have severe vignet, but probably i stacked a polarizer as well on those. Can't recall.

the tunnel won't be too long.. You've seen my pics.
If you get a slim 49 ND, i'd go for a three stop or so. You can always add on a 52mm ten stop (or whatever you have) but you can't reduce the 49mm ND anymore. my 2 cents.
Maybe check for other to chime in..

well, these are after cropping. to be honest, i can't recall how big the vignet was, so not sure anymore whether it was a big issue or not. I'd have to loop up the originals (at work now...). it was a generic cheap uv filter. I always leave it on, so i can put a 'normal' lens cap on.

I guess that getting some 49mm filters is the best solution. But also the more expensive one when one already has 52mm filters.
But probably you can stack multiple filters without any real vignet issue, no?

Sounds to me a 'wider' portrait lens is what you'd want first. Especially with a child, you can't stray too far & probably you'll want more people in the frame.
and for travel/city, imo, you don't want heavy lenses.

i also feel that would have made the portrait stronger.

And since we are somewhat talking composition here, on the first picture, the pot with the leaves take up too much foreground to my taste.

I've always enjoyed the rendering and OOF background with the 85 f2.
I generally use it wide open in av mode.
One of my favorite M lenses.

Just as a thought & depending on when a later point down the road is, for sure there will be a new crop sensor pentax that adresses that issue. At least i hope.

Help with lens choice

Personally i wouldn't overlap too much with your 18-135. For landscape i'd think more in terms of da15 or da12-24 or similar 3rd party. Quite different from 18mm..

For portraits i'm pretty happy with my da70. I always wondered about the da50 135 though. From reading the various posts here, seems it has an x factor.

As far as primes go, the fa31 is pretty much glued to my K3..
choices ;-)
