Reading the overview of this lens has me drooling in all the right ways. If I didn't want the K-new so badly, this might be at the top of the list.

I've also had good results with that same combination on my K-1 II. The IQ from that pair and that sensor resolution work well together. It doesn't hold up as well on my K-3 II, but it's still quite good.

I feel it's somewhat of a different medium that also just happens to involve a lens and light box.

I just have to play devil's advocate here. I have the SL version of this lens in K mount, and it is very nice. So, what is the cost of the copy you're looking at plus the conversion kit compared to buying one that was born this way? I'm assuming the SL-II was offered as "PK-A" and has the "A" setting so you can control the aperture via the camera versus stopping down manually? That alone would make me say wait until you can find a copy that started life as the K mount version. Manual focus is no big deal to me, but aperture control is something I really do like.

K-1 Mkii upgrade

A K-1 upgraded to a MK II is the same electronically, so there is no difference in performance. I will also confirm that seat of the pants focus speed improved after I did the upgrade.

And here's a link to actual test results confirming a real improvement:

I upgraded my K-1 to the K-1 II, and I would highly recommend getting the II. The AF is better, and the noise reduction kicks in after 640, and at that point, I find the reduced noise really outweighs any perceived losses in sharpness. I twisted at length trying to decide on the upgrade worrying if I'd regret it. After doing so, the answer is a resounding no regrets! I can't imagine not doing it at this point.

Really nice to see this. I found them when looking for my first digital camera, which ended up being a Sony DSC-V3, largely due to their review. When I was looking for my first DSLR, once again, their input confirmed my decision to buy my K-3 II. :)

If you use it in crop mode on the K-1 II, you will end up with a 16 MP picture. In this aspect, it will be like your K5 - you'll have the same FOV and pixel density that you are used to. And just to be clear, in crop mode, you're taking the portion of the image circle of the lens that doesn't have vignetting, hence you end up with the 16 MP output and same FOV as using the lens on APS-C. Hope this makes sense.

Welcome! The thing the PLM has is the focus speed, but yes, you've got the range covered with the Sigma. I'm afraid you're too far away to lend you my PLM, but if you could get one to test out, it would be nice to compare to the others. ;)

So do I. Have both the old 55-300 and the new 55-300 PLM. The only thing these lenses have in common is the name. The IQ is much better with my PLM, and the focus speed is amazing. I'd really advise putting it on the short list, especially for automotive sports. I'm a car nut too, and the PLM is the lens I will be taking to the track. And don't be put off by the f6.3 at 300mm. Back it off to about 280mm, and you're at f5.6.

I know this isn't what you asked, but if you're looking for speed and a great lens for motorsports, I might set my sights on budgeting for a used K3-II or KP and the 55-300 PLM. I think you would find it a revelation in performance.

It's a wonderful lens. You'll find it has a glow like quality wide open, which can actually be quite pleasing. Play around. It doesn't cost anything to take lots of digital pics. ;)

It may be prudent to remind her that a bit more up front to get the right lens which will provide greater long term usability and therefore value may require a slightly greater investment. ;)
