Second question for DA 12-24 owers

Well my 12-24 has a slight wobble when the lens is racked out on either end. I've honestly never noticed it, and don't recall it being any problem. 'has rather a lot of barrel wobble' is not how I would describe that on mine.

So...I wrapped up this months SIC. The FA*24 f2.0 is a lens that I quested after for a long time looking for the perfect 24mm lens. In the process, I still have 2 other 24mm lenses including a Nikon converted to Pentax mount 24 f2.8 and a Sigma Super Wide II 24 f2.8 (both of those two lenses I picked up over 10 years ago, while the FA*24 is a more recent acquisition). I suppose I should be testing all three and try to work out which one I like. Not today though. Any * lens is expected to perform well, and this one does as far as I can see. The only thing I've noticed is a tendency to have CA on outdoor shots (ok, I was pixel peeping and saw it), which is easily correctable with Lightroom tools. Rereading other user reviews on the forum, I note the tendency for soft focus being mentioned. I really didn't see that this month. As this is one of those FA lenses with the auto focus clutch, it takes me a while to remember to put it on or off, a bit annoying but only minorly so.

While there were so many aspects of testing/learning a lens that I didn't rigorously pursue, but I think I like this lens more than my other two.

As it's been a while since I did a SIC, it took some work getting back into the grove - as much as possible with COVID-19 limitations. I can't really think of any image this month that I thought was really good. Mostly my comps and subject were just ok as were my images as well.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to view/comment my postings. I apologize for not commenting on more image than I did. Even so, saw some great work this month from you guys. Thanks.

Yep, happened to me a few years back on my 645n. Actually on mine, the whole dial just came off. Sent it off to Eric for repair. All good today, in fact was shooting with it yesterday.

Oooo...I hadn't considered those. Ok, no toenails.

Congrats man. 5 years of hard work.
I started in 2011, but haven't been able to stay in SIC with any consistency. So, I know how much work you have to do to accomplish this. :)

' Before I had tried to have amazing shots everyday and I burned out' So totally understand that statement. Well said, I am in a similar place. :)

I'm giving July some thought. I think I'm in as well, but what lens? Been thinking about giving the Laowa 25mm f2.8 2x-5x ultra macro, but I'm concerned that it's so specialized that I can't use it every day for a month. Oh well, back to thinking.

Around $300 from Precision. They have fixed costs based on the camera.

Sara, we'll be right behind you tomorrow on that B/S theme day. By the way, you set the bar very high with the work / quality of your example. 5 years later, it's still the standard belfie IMHO.

Ok, congrats on Explore!

Been so long since I've read the rules but we can do a third party lens on a Pentax camera, right?

K5 sensor problem (?)

My memory on this problem is hazy but I'd search the forum for this behavior on a K-5. I believe it's been reported before. If it's what I remember, the main board in the camera has to be replaced, which at this point it may or may not be able to be fixed due to the age of the camera. Again, I'm not sure of this, hopefully a member who has had this happen will chime in.

My memory of K-5 problems (I still have mine too), is that a fully charged battery can cause the shutter to flutter until it's discharged a bit (or the camera gets hot,or so I have seen). The lens release button falls out, and perhaps your problem. Oh, yeah there was the early released versions with stuff on the sensor. I wish I could remember more. Personally, I have not had your problem on my K-5. What ever it is, that sounds very much like a trip to the repair shop is required.

Actually something very similar happened on my K-1II last year and the main board had to be replaced.

A question for 12-24 owners

I would agree with grispie on this point. I'm assuming you're using that on an APS-c body. For a long time my 12-24 was my go to lens for many things. I even like it better than the DA 15 Limited. Can't speak about the 11-18 but I think that's a different caliber lens. Regardless, IMHO the 12-24 is a good way to go. My only problem with that lens is that using a polarizer on it is not recommended for landscapes as it tends to darken only part of the sky and looks kinda weird. Otherwise, just go with it.

Yeah, dropping cameras...it happens. I remember the first time I dropped my K10d with my kit lens. As I was still sporting a UV filter on lenses in those days, the camera fell straight down lens first on to ceramic tile. Broke the UV filter, sorta tweaked the kit lens, did nothing to the camera. Tossed filter, continued to use the kit lens although it never was quite as easy to zoom, camera ok. So, I decided then to never put UV filters on lenses, haven't dropped one since...;)

All very true. Even so, when I pick up my now aging K-5, it's still feels just right to me. If my K-1II just had ISO 80 as did the K-5, I'd like it more than the K-5.

I may regret this in a few days but I'll jump in again. I need something to motivate me as this shelter-in-place has really curtailed my photographic desire. So...I'm in with the FA*24 f2, most likely with the K-1II but...I might go with the K-3 or IR converted K20d. Been awhile for me on these.

Well, I'm not saying this is your problem but I had something similar on my K-1 last year. Would turn on, screen would go blank, but it would not capture images (that is a brief summary of it anyway). Bottom line was when sent to Precision (in the USA) for repair, they basically replaced the main board in the camera. As they are never very verbose as to what was wrong, I can only conclude that something on the main board fried. So...given that the z is a different camera than a K-1, who knows? But, sounds kinda like what happened to me. Best of luck with that.

Oddly enough, I've had to toss at least one Pentax battery and had no problem with the Wasabi's. Admittedly, these are small samples.

smc Pentax DFA 100mm f2.8 Macro - Fringing stopped down to about f5.6?

This entire thread leaves me puzzled as well. I have both the DFA 100 and DFA 100 WR. I can't recall ever seeing this from either of the lenses. No I have to go have a look at this. Still, I've always found both of those lenses to produce wonderful images, although the rounded blades on the 100 WR has a much better bokeh. Otherwise, I don't know what else to say here. Still puzzled.
