If it's any consolation, it is probably easier on the billfold than many other hobbies. Yachting, horse riding, motor-biking, car collecting and numerous other notorious money drains spring to mind.

Images have no EXIF, save for resolution and filename. Must have been processed and EXIF stripped.

Is it possible to post a full straight-out-of-camera JPEG or DNG somewhere? - like Google Drive or MS OneDrive - and post a link?

It's a good lens on K-1. Performs nicely, particularly stopped down just a tad.

The fact that the camera started out OK, and then went wrong after a while suggests that some exposure settings have been changed somewhere along the line.

A couple of suggestions:

- shoot in full Auto mode for a while, not P or Av etc, and see if that solves the problem. If yes, it's a user setting somewhere that still needs to be reset.
- ensure exposure compensation is set to 0;
- ensure your ISO is set to ISO Auto over a decent range, and not a fixed value;
- ensure camera metering set to Multi-segment, not to spot, to get the full benefit out of the 86k metering sensor and ensure your metering can read the scene properly;
- ensure your metering isn't linked to your AF point;
- ensure your White Balance settings are for Auto White Balance;
- set the program line to Auto or Standard, not for example DOF priority;
- ensure AE-L isn't being engaged at the wrong time, or hasn't been assigned to a button you are pressing accidentally all the time;
- ensure your Custom Image settings aren't set to deliver too much brightness (eg set Custom Image to Auto, not Bright);
- check your LCD display settings aren't set too bright;
- reset all your custom settings to the defaults to clear any weird exposure compensation or other settings that may be at work.

It's always possible too that your camera settings are fine, but the settings in your PC monitor, or the image viewer/editor you normally use on your PC to review pictures, have changed or are causing your issues. Some image viewers/editors may auto apply some image adjustments the moment you open them.

Indeed. Fast moving, non-repetitive action events can easily see one doing kilo-shots/day.

K-1 Mark II focus peaking colors?

Seems a good solution.

Focus peaking is handy if you want/need to quickly see the plane of focus, but LV and zoom is certainly better for critical spot focusing.

One could also use a field monitor (or something like DJI Goggles :)) via the camera's HDMI-out to get optimal results out of LV focussing. Or use an app what displays the LV on-screen. Lots of technology options now if you use LV.

Speaking of MILLIONS of people, after seeing the new Apple phone launch this week, it reminded me that consumer camera/video budgets must be being hit hard by >$1000 smartphones (+ their monthly usage fees). With each device replaced every 24 months or less at great expense too. And several such phones per household is not unknown.

Unfortunately, while the new $4000 cameras from Nikon and Canon may take nice pictures, they don't run Tinder or Facebook.

If you turn on 'Highlight Alert' in your LV settings, you will usually see red around the focus peaks.

Sony had the option a long time ago even with NEX to change the peaking colour directly. Not essential to have, but nice.

I simply lament that cool tech like these high MP sensors seems to be directly marketed for surveillance applications. Like we don't have enough of that already.

And phone.

It is only 2018, and that's already scary. Where will we be at in 2028?

Unrelated to digital camera usage, what depresses me, for example on the Sony chip site, is that a key selling point of these high megapixel sensors is their suitability for aerial and large area surveillance. Sigh.

I wonder which 100 MP sensor Fuji will use?

IMX 211 (non BSI), which now been in production for a while, or the new BSI IMX461, which is likely to be more expensive. And will Fuji be first with the 150MP IMX411 sensor?

Ricoh needs a Photokina countdown timer, like Panasonic has done:

I also like the idea of all those workshops, and the stage program. Ricoh, pls note.

A 24MP FF would be handy, as it would probably mean even if they changed nothing else about the K-1 you'd probably get better low light, higher fps, and smaller RAWs to deal with in post-processing. This would follow the same path Nikon and Sony have taken in splitting their bodies into two groups - high resolution 36MP (and above), and more sporty 24MP.

+1. Only the smallest percentage of buyers will, I think, be experienced videographers committing these cameras to serious video work. The rest will be normal camera hobbyists.

K3ii replacement

80 pages and ongoing ... I'm not sure if I've contributed to the K-3II replacement wishlist yet, but I think there's a lot in the K-3 II Ricoh could keep - the shutter, the metering chip, the GPS, fancy stuff like pixel-shift, SR of course, the viewfinder, the WR, 2 cards.

But at a minimum they should: go shopping for a new 24 MP sensor; do better video; substantially update the AF (perhaps my increasing points and frame coverage and adding a dedicated AF chip); double the buffer capacity; and add the accelerator chip (with an on/off switch).

Furthermore, to future-proof the body they should update all the I/O subsystems (card storage, USB, WiFi) to the latest standards (eg UHS II or III or SD Express, USB v3.1, USB type C plug, 802.11ax WiFi). And add Glonass support to the GPS too. :)

Welcome to the forums.

That's not a bad idea. Some of the new cameras like the Nikon Z series, the new Canon mirrorless, and the Fujifilm X-H1 all have something like that (albeit not tilted), called a 'status panel' by Fuji, so someone in Japan is making them. Not sure if they can display histograms, but it may be possible.

There are recent mirrorless that claim -3 EV (A7s), -4 EV (Z6), even -6 EV[!!] (EOS R) autofocus sensitivity (usually with ~f1.4 lenses). If true, even though the photons will still be scarce in low-light, they must be able to find contrast somehow in order to make those claims, even through lots of sensor noise. Perhaps the circuitry and algorithms that help achieve this magic could also help improve EVF performance. But I am not optimistic.

Even this interesting story about testing the low-light limits of the EOS R damns the EVF performance under low-light with the very faintest of praise: "I see a pretty good representation of what the images are going to look like".

https://www.canon-europe.com/pro/stories/eos-r-daniel-etter/

Most people would expect to see better than only a 'pretty good representation' of what's in front of them from a modern digital camera. :)
