Why so many expecting full frame form Pentax?

What makes you think you that you can only shoot moving targets with AF-C? I've talked to a few sports photographers, and they don't just set the autofocus and fire away, they will use techniques like pre-focusing on a set point and anticipate the action. If you were shooting a baseball player like a pitcher in wind-up, the 5fps would be very handy. Same with a golfer making a drive. It's funny, but the K-7s biggest critics tend to be people who have never used the camera!

I bought a new MX in 1983 for less than $200, and a top-of-the-line LX in 1984 for $400. According to a cost of living chart, the average yearly wage in 1983-1984 was around 1/3 of 2009, so the entry level MX would be under $600, and the more advanced LX would be $1200, almost exactly in line with the K2000 and the K-7. But you could keep film cameras for decades, and there are still people shooting with those old bodies. But a typical DSLR enthusiast is on a 2 to 3 year upgrade cycle, so unless you spent a *lot* on film, photography is probably much more expensive now than in the 35mm film days. And that doesn't even consider the computer side of the equation, which is on a rapid upgrade system too. In a declining economy, I see a future with a lot of ex-photography enthusiasts.

Well, if Pentax goes away I would consider 4/3rds.

In regards to competition, Sony is going at the DSLR market the same way they went into the video game market: they are willing to lose a lot of money to gain market share. If people expect Hoya to lose money to stay in that market, they are kidding themselves. If FF is indeed the future, then Samsung is the only hope for K-mount users, but I'm betting that they move the opposite direction and go small.

So if you really need FF, you had better sell your K-mount gear ASAP, because you have disappointment in your future. I will keep checking the marketplace, my APS-C gear should last several more years at least!

If I was a retailer trying to sell Pentax cameras, I would like to see this:
1. K3000 - refreshed K2000 with weather sealing, unchanged except bigger buffer and orientation sensor, aimed to be under $600 USD with sealed kit lens.
2. K300 - Samsung 14.5mp sensor (with Gordon B. Good sensor tweaks!), live-view, 3.5fps, good buffer, weather sealed, under $800 USD with sealed kit lens.
3. K300 Super - Above with movie features like K-7, $999 USD with sealed kit lens.

K-7 cracks the top 10 in sales

If the K-7 gets a good enough review from DPReview, it should get a spike in sales. Then after a bit it will steadily drop down, until it gets discounted to the under $1k mark. Then it should become a solid seller until its successor appears, as with the K20D.

Hoya Interview.. To make PENTAX turn profit by 2010.

The problem isn't with legacy lenses, it is that Pentax currently has high-end lenses that would not work, or be compromised, on a FF body. The DA Limiteds, and some of the DA* zooms, would drop into an unmarketable niche. For Pentax to go full frame, they're going to have to transition these lenses into designs and focal lengths that work, and make sense, on a full-frame body. You cannot have high-end APS-C lenses and high-end FF lenses in the same lineup without creating a lot of marketing confusion. When/if Pentax releases a FF body, that will be the perceived high-end, and where the expensive quality glass will have to be aimed. They cannot build a system that is primarily sustained by legacy glass, it's just not economically viable.

I'm guessing that you're shooting JPEGs, and if so you just need to adjust the sharpening settings down a bit. In-camera sharpening will increase the appearance of noise.

Wolf Camera No Longer Carries Pentax

They should just find one good camera or electronic store in each major city to stock and display their gear. Even if it's just a subsidized proposition, it would give prospective buyers the opportunity to handle their gear and increase their visibility. Have all the high-end lenses displayed there to help engender that gear lust we got to experience during the recent K-7 tour. And put a store finder on the website.

Sony's DSLRs have a poor showing on Amazon too. I can't believe that Sony is happy with the performance of their big DSLR investment.

FA* 24/2 or Sigma 24/1.8

My experience with Sigma wide angles (confirmed by other users) is that although they are generally sharp, they are very vulnerable to flare. Pentax wide angles, on the other hand, are exceptional in their flare resistance. That may or may not be a consideration in your decision. I have no experience with the FA*24, however, and they seem a bit overpriced when they come up in the used market.

Maybe in Japan, but I haven't seen too much attention in the U.S. I have yet to see one on the street (I see lots of SLRs all the time), and the one on display in Samy's Camera got no attention during my entire recent visit. It has a decent but not electrifying #15 rank on Amazon behind 14 Nikons and Canons, with the K20D and K-7 at #21 and #22 respectively. So I would call the sales decent but certainly not the "hottest on the market".

It may be 'useless' to some, but I have far less dust problems with my K2000 and K200D than I did with my *istDS, which was a dust accumulation machine. I considered switching to Olympus due to constant dust woes, and way too much time spent with the clone tool in Photoshop.

DA* 55mm F1.4 review on dpreview

A co-worker of mine, a new Pentaxian, just recently bought an FA50, and I warned him not to use it wide open due to poor optical quality (so I've read). To prove the point, we did some test shots together - but they actually turned out pretty damn good, very useable. So much for my expertise! I wouldn't hesitate to use the FA50 at f1.4 if necessary. YMMV.

Talk me out of this...

Brian, there's not point to talking you out of it, since both the D90 and the K20D are really nice cameras and you will be very happy with either one. The strengths and weaknesses of the Pentax versus Nikon systems have been discussed ad nauseum here and elsewhere, so no need to beat that dead horse. Good luck with your decision!

D300S an answer to the K-7?

I would rather have a K-7 too, but if I really needed the performance advantages of the D300, and was willing to put a system together around it, I would have a hard time not getting the D700 instead. I think the D300 is in an increasingly difficult price/performance category.

Well said. Also, in regards to lens reviews, DPR wasn't especially keen on the DA15 either, but I went ahead and bought the lens and am very happy with it. Every review needs to be taken in context with other reviews including user testimonials. DPR is one of the very best review sources available, but they are not the final, definitive word.

That's because you're "Big" G. I would rather carry the much lighter and smaller K-7 around with me all day, with a few Limited primes. Choice is good!

No lens ever gets you closer. Just think in terms of field-of-view and it will all make sense. A 50mm lens on APS-C will give you the same *field-of-view* as a 75mm on a 35mm film camera. The rest is all just Fun With Numbers.

Any News on K200D Replacement !

I have a K200D and a K2000, and the latter camera is a pretty decent little machine. It's much quicker in operation than the K200D, especially the AF which is fast and reliable. The speed is also very noticeable when using auto-bracketing. It's also quite small, and makes a great match with a DA Limited prime. I carry it with a DA21 on it as my point-and-shoot.
