Lens-side mount or camera-side mount? Camera mount, well they don't make for Canon and Nikon mount too, because like you said it'll only useful for macro. Lens mount, it's possible to buy the Canon one paired with PK to EOS adapter.

Oh I forgot about their mirrorless (Nikon series 1 and Canon M), yes maybe they will make for those (camera) mounts in the future. But hey we have mirrorless too, K-01. Theoretically, Metabones can make a special one for Pentax K-01 which will be put inside the mount, since K-01 has no mirror. But realistically though, even if it's possible I don't think they'll ever make one..

Magic lens producing lackluster photos on K-01

On the contrary, I found my magic lenses perform better with my K-01. The reason is the accurate AF. My most recent lens, FA 24 is quite soft wide open and the AF is somewhat erratic with my K-5. I did AF adjustment more than once but I was still not satisfied. Then came K-01. Given enough light so it doesn't fail to AF, the AF is always spot on. Also, perhaps because of the more accurate AF or because of less thick AA filter (or combination of both), the images taken wide open (or close to) also appear sharper compare to my K-5. Since then I started to use my other fast AF lenses with my K-01 and I feel more confident using them wide open.

Anyone shooting in 1:1 (square) aspect ratio?

I googled and it seems that the only possible way is to overwrite the metadata inside the raw file using command line program exiftool before loading it to Lightroom. I haven't tried myself though, now in office.

What software are you using to see the full size raw images? Because I use Lightroom, and it shows raw images with 1:1 aspect ratio, not full size, and I couldn't find any option to change aspect ratio except when cropping. Thanks.

K-01 firmware update 1.01

I see. So it changes aperture when minimum ISO and maximum shutter speed 1/4000 is still too bright? In ithat case I agree that this is not an issue and is not a bug.

But what about less extreme situation? I have a feeling that even when maximum aperture (wide open), minimum ISO and maximum shutter will not result in overexposure, the K-01 still changes aperture, and this is what that reviewer called a bug. But please prove me wrong (and prove that that reviewer is a fool).

Anyway, I had NEX-5 and used it with some Pentax lenses. Since NEX can't control the lens, the focus peaking is always showing the correct DOF, but the drawback is the LCD can become dark and or grainy (more grainy than the resulting photo). Now I think about it, I'm not sure which one I prefer, NEX way or K-01 (without bug).

K-01 firmware update 1.01

Not trying to be rude, but I don't think you understand the bug, and honestly I also have problem understanding it with only that available information.
But assuming I understand it correctly, let me give an example.

Let's say I'm using K-01 with FA 43 1.9 Limited.in Aperture Priority (Av) mode and have selected F 3.2 .

When using AF:
Before shutter is pressed and during focusing, camera keeps the lens wide open at F1.9 . So the DOF that you see is the DOF of F 1.9 . The aperture only changed to F3.2 after the shutter is pressed. DOF of F3.2 is wider than F1.9 so this is not a problem.

When using MF:
Before shutter is pressed, according to that guy, K-01 will not keep the lens wide open, but will change aperture according to the available light. When it's very bright it will chose small aperture, say F8 even though the selected aperture is F3.2 . Of course when the shutter is pressed the aperture will then be changed to F3.2 . Only when the light is low then K-01 will keep the lens wide open before shutter is pressed.

But at F8 the DOF is much wider than F3.2, and more things will be in focus shown by Focus Peaking. When the shutter is pressed, aperture is back to F3.2 and the DOF also smaller/thinner. So it is very likely the actual object we want to be in focus, and is shown in focus by Focus Peaking at F8, might not in focus in the resulting image because it's only has a DOF of F3.2

I think this is the bug. When using AF, K-01 is able to keep aperture wide open and change shutter or ISO to compensate for the light level, but when using MF it fails to do so.

I don't have K-01 and I don't know how severe this bug is in real use. But I'm curious and actually contemplating to buy a K-01 so I'm hoping someone could confirm this bug and its existence with the new firmware? Thanks.

I'm wondering about this bug mentioned in DPReviews forum when K-01 just came out, has it been fixed with the new firmware?
It's hard to explain the bug so I'll just copy paste it here:

QuoteQuote:

Sean speak of KA lenses, i suppose in A setting. In autofocusing mode, focus is lock at the maximum aperture, so a firmware update will solve this problem, Sean say.

Their is the same problem with Ricoh GXR, Fuji X100 and XPro...

Complete thread here

To be honest I don't completely understand what the guy said and I don't have access to that review by Sean Reid. But since he said Ricoh GXR and Fuji cameras also have the same problem I assume the problem is real.

FA*24 weird wide open OOF highlight

I did that. Both A and direct F2.0, result is the same. Furthermore, while the first two pic in my original post were taken with Pentax K-5, the last three pictures were taken with a different camera, a NEX-5 + Pentax K adapter.

So it's definitely not the camera's fault.

No problem & thanks!

Yes the lens came with a Kenko Portrait Enhancer filter attached. I don't really know what a Portrait Enhancer filter is but I assure you it's not the cause of the weird highlight shape, I've tested with & without filter and came out the same.

In my original post I included crop photos of F2.8 and F3.5 highlights, they are normal for stop down highlights. I just checked the blades at F2.8 they're not perfect but close to octagon shape and if you see the highlights in the picture above they resemble the shape formed by the blades at F2.8 and 3.5 respectively.

Thanks for taking interest though!

FA*24 weird wide open OOF highlight

The problem is, I can't see the blades when it's wide open. I see something circular but not the blades just the opening inside the lens.
I guess I really have to service the lens..

Thanks for confirming that this isn't normal.

Regarding uncommon / not a visual interest shot, I didn't plan to take the first shot. I was using Live VIew and my at one time my K-5 failed to focus and gave up at the lens MFD. And that's when I saw the highlights, they're clearly visible even without zooming.
But I intend to use my FA24 for low light / night shot and soon or later I'm bound to find some OOF highlights in the background although perhaps won't be so noticeable like this. I'd rather have octagon highlights to this irregular thing.

I'm trying hard to like this lens, because I really wanted it for very long time but only able to buy it recently (1 month ago).

FA*24 weird wide open OOF highlight

While taking night shot with my recently bought FA* 24, I noticed that it has weird shape of OOF highlight when it's wide open. It's not perfect circle but it's not hexagon either (it has 8 blades).

Here's a crop wide open (I tried both with aperture ring on A and directly F2.0 but the result is the same)

As a comparison, here's a crop taken from the same spot, with FA43 wide open

Then I got curious and want to see the highlight when stop down. The following crop are taken at a different time:

F2.0

F2.8

F3.5

Turns out the highlights are only weird when the lens is set to wide open. I wonder what is wrong with my copy and how can I address it? Or is it normal for FA *24? For such an expensive lens I'm somewhat dissapointed. First of all the sharpness wide open isn't what I expected (perfectly fine at F2.8 but then it's so large for only a F2.8 lens). The focus also not easy to lock with my K-5. And then this highlight weirdness

K5 Exposure Compensation in Manual Mode
Posted By sajah

Just FYI, Exposure Compensation in M mode does have it use, albeit very specific and arguably not very important: when using Green button in M mode it will consider EC to determine its reading.

My first DSLR was *istDS and unlike K20D, it doesn't honor exposure compensation in M mode. That time I had an old Vivitar lens that acts like a M lens, so I had to use M mode and use green button to meter. However, the reading always off two stops at least, depends on how far I close down the aperture (problem was the cheap old lens not my DS). So every time I used green button I had to follow by adjusting shutter two stops, and it became quite tedious after a while.

If my *istDS were like K20D, then I could set my EC to -2EV and my green button would consider the EC and meter 2 stop less than normal.

That was one of many reasons I really wanted to upgrade to K20D at that time. However, when I got my K20D I never use that lens anymore so now I have K-5 I don't miss that feature at all

To be exact with K-5 it's not in Custom Function tab but in Playback tab (from Menu, second tab, it has playback icon).

It's useful but I can't get used to it, always distracting so I turn it off most of the time and check histogram instead.

Where to buy pentax in South Korea?

I'm not Korean but I currently live in South Korea. I see that a Korean already answered but since you PMed me I'll share what I know from my experience, from a non-Korean living in Korea perspective.

Yong-san is the electronic center in Seoul, similar to Akihabara in Tokyo (I'm guessing). The Pentaxzone mentioned is probably your best bet, though you can always try other shops, price shouldn't differ a lot between shops but in my case I always check online price for comparison. The I-mall park also the easiest to reach from Yong-san Subway station but there plenty more shops in other malls too.

If you want to check price, go to Gmarket, it has English version: Gmarket in English . There you can check that K-30 and K-x both available in Korea. Price wise, many of my friends asked me and expect Japanese electronic gadgets price in Korea is cheaper than in other countries (probably because it's close to Japan) but unfortunately not. In my experience the electronic gadget price, tax included, in Korea is pretty much similar to the price in Indonesia, my home country. Perhaps still better than price in Europe or Australia, but certainly more expensive than the USA price I've seen like from B&H or Amazon.

But there is this thing called Parallel Import in Korea, where importers directly import goods from Japan (to my understanding, I could be wrong, I'm not fluent in Korean). You can tell if its a parallel import from the manual book, the manual is in Japanese instead of Korean or in case of multi-language it doesn't have Korean. The box also usually does not have sticker (seal) written in Korean. These stuffs have cheaper price (about 100,000 won cheaper usually), but the catch is, your warranty almost certainly will not be honored inside Korea. Not sure if you bring it to other countries though (In case of Indonesia they will not honor it, official or parallel import doesn't matter, global warranty doesn't mean anything there).

I think Pentaxzone will not sell parallel import stuffs for sure because they're the official Pentax seller. But if you feel adventurous you can go to other shops and ask for 내수 / 비정품 (print the word and show to the seller).

Regarding second hand market. I don't live in Seoul so I don't visit Yong-san very often, but I never found any shops selling second hand camera and lens in Yong-san. As I know, if I want to shop for those, I go to Namdaemun Market (남대문 시장). Namdaemun is actually a traditional market and good for buying Korean souvenirs. There's no camera shops inside the market but along the main road close to the market there's a lot of small camera shops and there they sell second hand camera and lenses. The word for second hand is 중고 (pronounced choong-go). Don't expect too much for cheap second hand vintage lenses though, In Korea they're mostly collector items, and thus have collector item's price.

In short, Contrast Detect, similar to how Contrast Detect Autofocus works. The program scans the image, if a pixel (or small area, maybe) contrast is over a certain threshold then it is considered in focus.

However, this is all my opinion and I don't have anything to back it up, but I'm pretty sure it's correct or at least in the ballpark.

And yes I need more sleep :ugh:

On topic, I've made a friend became Pentaxian. Not really converted though it was his first camera. If he were already using another brand converting him would be more difficult I suppose.

A friend of mine is much more successful than me. He made a lot of his friends became Pentaxian, only a few of them bought other brands, but they're all still go hunt picture together peacefully :p

WOW! Looks amazing and very 3D. Also I don't see any Purple Fringing in the picture above. I often (if not always) got PF with this kind of shot (thin DOF, lots of branch and leaves and sky in the background). Did you post-process it or it's really non-existent? Mind to post 100% crop (or link to full size download). Thank you!

Pick one: Pentax 50-135 or Sigma 70-200

Had similar concern for quite sometime and I eventually picked something else, Sigma 50-150 2.8 (the old version without OS). It's HSM so it's supposedly faster in focusing and there's no worrying about SDM failure. Also, while 135mm and 150mm isn't significantly different, it's at least closer to 200mm (require less crop to mimic 200mm FOV). It's also still very small and light compare to 70-200.

A win-win solution in my opinion. Only problem is to locate one because it's been replaced with the new version with OS, which is unfortunately bigger and heavier due to the OS (besides we don't need OS). I was lucky to find one in a local shop recently and snatched it right away.

Renaming files, rookie error in Lightroom

You can let Lightroom locate the missing files by:
- Right click a missing image and select "Show in Explorer"
- It will complain that the file is missing and give option to locate, click Locate button to do so
- Navigate to the right image folder and select the new file
- If you rename a folder then all the images in the folder will be missing, so it will ask to also automatically locate other files in vicinity or something like that. Forgot the actual wording, couldn't reproduce it actually but I was sure it asked like that before, just now when I tried it just automatically did that without asking, not a bad thing tho

DA15 compared to Sony 16mm

Yeah..

I uploaded the photos to a Picasa album, full size images are downloadable. I didn't use tripod so the framings slightly different and I was using Av so the metering (matrix/multi-segment) also differ, since my K20D tend to underexposed I used my usual +0.3 EC and use the same EC with the NEX, not knowing that it has different behaviour, so the NEX images tend to overexpose. The sensors were different sensor too so the colors also differ, but all were taken in JPG with default setting IIRC. Told you it wasn't scientific :p So draw (or draw not) your own conclusion :ugh:
