Thanks Pentaxpixie,

It is a tiny camera that is capable well above it's size and the APS sensor in it is stunning.

It is not much larger than my old Ricoh GRD and still fits easily in a pocket.

Out on Sun with the GR, have to admit to not having used it for a while (always with me though) and the images served to remind me just how amazing this camera is.

The quality of image from the APS sensor belies the small size of what appears as an insignificant camera - perfect for street work!

We had a short (2 day) visit to Brighton between Christmas and New Year and rather than use the big DSLR, I wanted to use the GR to capture some night time photos - very happy with the results.

Thanks wtlwdwgn,

The GR is a fantastic small pocket camera that punches way above its weight and is perfect for events such as these when I am having a lazy day without DSLR's!!

Portraiture with the GR?

Cute shot that works.

I have not tried the GR for close in portrait work but it is a great tool for environmental portraits.

The camera certainly is very versatile and many write it off as just another compact without appreciating the APS sensor, stunning lens and famous Ricoh ergonomics and firmware - their loss our gain.

Thanks,

Believe it or not there was no very aggressive editing just a small amount in Viveza and then Silver Efex Pro used to convert to B&W and this always emphasizes the clouds with a touch of extra structure.

The clouds on their own were well detailed and a mix of dark and light.

Nick,

I really like your processing of this street image, it has that subtle graphic feel to it that really works for me.

Do you mind sharing your methods for achieving it please?

Happy for you to PM/Email them to me if you prefer.

Thanks,
Ian

I was in Cheltenham today and again had the GR with me so grabbed some street images - yet again this little marvel delivered some great results that I thought I would convert to B&W.

I came across this old wedding car in town the other day and then when driving back from an event I came across the old petrol station so had to stop and photograph the pumps.

On the way to work the other morning I stopped and grabbed this shot of the mist across the field.

In all cases it was the joy of having the small and compact GR with me that paid off.

GR noise?

I have not found any problems with my GR noise wise, I do limit my auto ISO to 1600 ISO and find that delivers more than acceptable images.

The images that you see on the LCD are JPEGS from RAW and as such when blown up to view look evil, the raw image is a totally different case and I have never been concerned about sharpness / grain / noise on any of the images even those using longer exposures.

I find that Lightroom (as good as it is) does create images that have more noise/grain than those I get from Photoshop / NIK software.

Travelling: Ricoh GR - questions

I am completely happy with my GR and it travels with me everywhere, despite it not having a viewfinder, the updated LCD is brilliant and still allows use in sunny conditions (I did manage to pick up a superb GV-1 finder for a good price "just in case" but as yet had no need to use it).

I have not noticed any issues with low light images and have done some timed exposures (I try not to use auto ISO for low light and if time / situation permits I will set the camera to 100ISO and use the self timer to avoid movement)

I recently took some night shots in London when we were visiting and did use auto ISO so some of the images at night were 800ISO, I am still pleased with them. I also did some night shoots as base ISO recently and again I am pleased with the results - both sets can be seen at the links below:

Hope these help and I have no hesitation in recommending this camera - it is superb.

I am fine with that as the GR moved the Ricoh range into a different league! A 40mm lens would be nice but not essential.

I have not tried focus tracking with the camera but find that for the images above, with the latest firmware installed and the camera set to "high speed AF" it locked on very quickly and without any difficulty.

I did have to adjust the highlist post shot as they were a tad dark but the dynamic range is sufficient to allow this without problem.

It is a delight to use and so small it does not attract attention, even for these shots with a few drink infused people about!

Thanks btnapa,

I agree that the EV compensation rocker is easy to use (a little too easy) and in the first few days I found that the way I held the camera I at times inadvertantly changed the EV and had to reset to what I wanted, I now pay more attention to thumb placement and checking on screen.

I do not expect Ricoh to release and upgrade as yet as there is very little to change, there have been rumours of thme having a 40mm lens but I would be surprised if this finds it's way onto another GR type the lens will need to be bigger and further from the sensor to allow effective coverage unless they incorporate a curved sensor!

I wanted to try the GR out again for some night work so visited an area where I knew the lighting would be challenging.

Set the camera to 100ISO aperture priority at between f4 - 5.0 and used the 2 sec delayed timer, I managed to find some suitable platforms to rest the camera on and these are the results.
