K1 vs A7?
Posted By pinholecam

It depends on the lenses you already have.
The A7 works better for MF lenses.
In fact, thats all I use it for (for my LTM, M mount; FD mount; to M42/K mount manual lenses)

The A7II is what you should look at, as it solved most of the issues of the A7.
Namely sensor reflection; slower AF; no faster PDAF (useful with some AF adapters); color cast in corners with some rangefinder lenses.
The unsolved problem is the thick sensor stack of the A7 series which does make edges poorer for many old wides (and even some 50mm like the Leica 50mm summicron and summilux.)

The K1 is the better camera if you want AF on your lenses.
Also much better user interface and features relevant to photo taking.
Pixel shift is really awesome in fine details coupled with Raw Therapee processing

Some samples with the Takumar 35/3.5.

I'm using it on FF and not on a Pentax camera, so YMMV.

There is certainly a difference between how it draws and renders an image compared to the 40XS.
More subtle in the contrast and more natural colors imo

The still less explored FF MILC route is the stylish/hipster/retro camera + small lenses route.
Think a digital ME super with pseudo M lenses that have AF. (have to give up on fast apertures and manual focusing).

Laymen with the cash want, small, easy to use, stylish and a perceived ability to be keeping up with the Jones' wrt camera capabiity, so there might be a market here.

Some samples from the 40XS.

Its a rather nice all rounder lens on apsc.
Rather fast, super small, sharp at f2.8, rich colors and contrasty.

Even works somewhat as a FF lens.

20151031-DSC06903-1 by jenkwang, on Flickr

At f8-f11, its a decent FF landscape lens as well.

I left a large sized file in the flickr too for those who want to check IQ on FF.

$120 and you get a very small lens with AF.
I'd get the 40ltd.

I prefer the look from the 40 (I have the XS), very contrasty and strong drawing style.
That 40mm FL combined with f2.8 does give a better separation efffect too.

Grit to be Icarus by jenkwang, on Flickr

There is always a lot of hearsay and unsubstantiated claims about Pentax AF, so I took it for a spin to see it all the talk was "true".
From the great number of photos I have posted here before you guys know that I am a really "well practiced sports shooter" (ie. 0 picts; NOT ) ;) :D

We can always find big claims from shooters who say that their camera/lens failed them for this and that and that the next brand or next shiny new camera/lens will be a game changer. (Insert the mandatory "I'm moving to BrandX the grass is so green here and all you guys are suckers" :D)
Usually, you find them saying the same thing next year with the next camera. :D

So, in the end, I feel that there is a lot of "buy in" into the thinking that the latest gear is "essential" for this and that of a photographer's needs, but to me, it is really the photographer and the skills he has picked up along his journey in photography that will see him thru, rather than the gears.

Wouldn't it be nicer if the narrative is
"I had a hard situation that I wanted to cover, slapped on the lens I had available, dug into my recollection of rather similar scenarios I had shot, used those skill sets and got the job done"

Which normal lens to get: Sigma 30, Sigma 35 (old, new), Pentax 35?

But do remember that the Sigma 30 EX DC is a one trick pony.
If you move on to landscapes or even take photos that have more than one person, you may not get good sharpness on the edges.

Ultimately, its up to you and your needs, you just need to be sure the poorer edges for the Sigma 30 won't be an issue for you usages.
I recall that when it was launched, many (including Canikony) users when for this lens because it seemed a cheap 50mm equivalent on apsc with f1.4 aperture.
But most folks sold off this lens and its seldom mentioned anymore nowadays.

There is a workaround for K mount AF.
People use the M-mount AF adapter and stack on a K mount adapter.
I don't know how well it works though.

Certainly enough background separation imo.

Poll: If Pentax disappears, what would it be for you?

I did not vote.

The immediate thing I will do will be to buy 1 more of the latest Pentax FF body and that should last me 8-10yrs at least.
I had a really old used Canon 5D, and I reckon it was 6-8yrs when I had it, so the camera should last.

After that, I will either look out for 2nd hand Pentax FF bargains in the used market or get whatever is out there that supports use of the lenses via adapter.

Wow! They really need to check what's being put up...

Reminds me of my prints if the nozzle is clogged. :D

While I am sure it will be fixed, it will still leave that uncomfortable feel of whether it will be "masked off" in the imaging processor or really fixed.

Not related observation...
Isn't the new lenses the best ever and sharp as razor edge to edge even from wide open?
They don't seem so from the 2 samples.

FA31ltd is excellent at f8, f11.
Its really a very good all rounder for travel, switching between reportage style street/people/candids at larger apertures to stopped down landscape.

FA77ltd is also good for landscape.
Very very sharp from f5.6-f8.

FA43ltd, I have not shot enough landscapes with it to comment.

Agree with Clackers in that photographers like Elena Shumilova does shots like these often with a Canon EF 135/2 at f2.5.

A lot of what you see is also the result of using post processing.
Its really not likely that the lens "draws over" the subjects that nicely/properly at wide open with such a shallow DOF (esp for some of the group shots samples posted).

Those thinking of an AF adapter, need to do more research.
I have read varying stories of it (including one where I helped my friend buy the TechArt adapter).
Some are happy with the AF, some find that AF speed varies with the lens used.
Others had reliability problems with the adapters.
Yet others had issues after FW updates.
Things might have become more stable now, but I have not bothered to follow up.
So pls do the research before thinking that this is a fuss free route.

That said, FE mount has a large range of lenses now between MF to AF options.

My A7 (thin filter modified) is my digital ME Super.
I only use it for my manual RF, Pentax and orphan mount lenses.
So the improvements on this A7iii does not interest me since its mainly AF, Video and FPS.

On paper, it does seem a good deal compared to the other 24mp FF cameras like 6Dii and D650, though iirc, they are a little cheaper.

70-200/4 could be the new Tamron 70-210/4, but lets see.

I don't really mind/care so long as there are more modern lens options.

Looks like WA and UWA primes are a while away for me, so I will have to look at the current options first and decide in 2019/2020 if I will swap to the Pentax options.
Not that I really need any more lenses actually... :D

The things listed on David Hobby's site is ok.
But do note that he has gotten very famous and I feel that there is now some product placement in that article as opposed to in the early days.

The flash and triggers he recommends should be treated as generic.
Meaning that you will be able to use another brand so long as you do the necessary homework on what they can do.
For example, I use the YN560IV which already has built in TX/RX functions, which means that I no longer use wireless receivers.
I do have a YN wireless trigger which controls a few flashes at a time though if I require its use.
There are others like Godox, etc

I think they persevered and by the 5th iteration (ie, M5) , they have made some headway.

Its also a decent take on the apsc milc format imo.
Size is nice sized, smallish lenses (kinda).
Catered for lower end where their 350D was previously.

To me, they have shown a path out for DSLR makers who have not dared to make the jump.
Of course with the EF lenses its easier to make an adapter compared to Pentax and Nikon.

1. Many are worried about Pentax future and direction. Its really ok to say that their strategy is a slower product cycle, its better than silence. Can they do more to engage users and what would be the direction they plan to take?

2. What is Pentax's take on the growth of the MILC market and competitors going in that direction? (eg. Sony, Canon, Fuji)

3. When is the FF WA lens scheduled?

Its a do or lose out situation.... :D

Spend $550 and you get to sell your K1 at K1II 2nd hand prices in 2yrs time.
Don't do it and you get to sell your K1 at a perceived "obsolete" , even lower 2nd hand price. :D

If K1II was the same as right now, but with 4K video, w/o an upgrade option, I'd be even more disappointed, since I'd have to spend this $1999 for PSII and not have any use for the 4K video (since I don't shoot it).

I'll wait for some more info/samples/use impressions on PSII and AF to decide on the upgrade, though in my opinion, its not a bad dilemma to have. :D
