Does the image need to be in RAW in order to use software to correct CA? I'm using Corel AfterShot Pro 3 and the image I'm trying to correct is a jpg. I see no change in the CA when I use the software to correct it.

Cropping distortion

Is it present as a result of my cropping of the image or is it also present in the native image? And thanks for pointing me in the right direction for further research. You can see the green distortion in this picture.

Cropping distortion

This is definitely a novice question. I have a new K-70 that I've been taking to a local wildlife refuge. Much of the wildlife I shoot with the kit 18-135 lens, as well as my smc Pentax M 200mm prime, is too far away for a close up exposure. When I crop the image on my computer (Corel After Shot) I get purple or green color distortions around some of the objects in the image. What is this distortion called and is there anyway to deal with it in post processing? I know the solution is to obtain optics which have the reach I need but I don't have the budget at the moment.

I have a SMC Pentax M 200mm prime I plan to use with my K-70. I also have a 2x converter. If I pair the two will I effectively have a 400mm lens? Do I lose anything using this setup versus dedicated 400mm lens (prime or zoom)?

Is the free cleaning worth the risk?

I just received my $17.96 Pentax extended warranty card in the mail. I see that I am entitled to one free cleaning during the warranty period. I'm wondering if the benefits of a free cleaning at Precision Camera (I assume that's who does it) is worth the risk of mailing the camera and having a technician fumble around with my camera. My K-70 is new so I won't need to do this for a while. Assuming my camera is well cared for, kept clean, and is trouble free, would you recommend sending or not sending the camera for the cleaning?

Lenses for Yosemite, San Francisco, Pacific highway trip by a Brit!!

You have plenty of camera gear recommendations so allow me to give you a tip on some fantastic barbecue. The Gorilla BBQ on Hwy 1 just south of San Francisco offers some fantastic BBQ. You order out of an old caboose on the side of the highway in Pacifica. You'll love it for the food and the unique setting.

Also Ansel Adams' house where he had his darkroom is off of Hwy 1 just south of Carmel. It's a private residence still in the Adams family so you can't visit but I did enjoy driving by just for the connection to his photography.

Correct me if I'm wrong on lens choice

I'm aware of the crop factor but I'm also fighting a constrained budget. For a point of reference, my favorite set up is my K1000 with a 28mm lens. The 28mm lens seems to work really well for the type of photography I enjoy and the places I like to go (railroads, outdoors, walking around downtown Portland).

I would love to find a good deal on a 15mm lens to account for the crop factor but I wasn't able to come up with anything in my price range ($150 or less). One option I'm open to is using my manual 28mm prime on the K-70 for now while I save or wait for a bargain on a DA lens.

18 feels fine. I think I'd be happy with any of them between 15-21. My preliminary decision to go with the 35 prime was largely a concession on my part that I can't find anything in the 15-21 range that would fit my budget currently.

I'm looking for a wide angle general purpose "walk around" lens for my newly purchased K-70. I bought the 18-135 WR lens with the camera but want a wide angle lens that has a much lower profile (length). I've done a little research and my choice at this point is the Pentax DA 35mm 2.4.

I'm open to any other suggestions in both Pentax and non-Pentax lenses, as well as new and used lenses. I thought I'd post here before I make my purchase in case I'm missing something.

I'm looking for a Mac based photo storage application

I know very little about Lightroom, or Darktable, or any other photo processing applications. Do you download your memory cards directly into Lightroom and use Lightroom as your storage/file management application in addition to using it to process/edit your photos?

I stretched my budget just to get the K-70. Trust me I would have gone with the K-1 if that was possible, even though the K-1 is much more camera than I'll ever need.

First, from reading your post I believe you're under the impression that this forum is an official Pentax company forum. It's not connected to corporate Pentax/Ricoh in any way, as far as I know.

As for your thoughts on Pentax, I, like you use the Pentax K1000 for film photography. I actually use two; one loaded with BW and one loaded with color. For a DSLR I was using a Nikon D3100. My daughter, who graduates university in a few months, is a Canon fan and recently upgraded from a Canon t5 to a t6. I went with her to Pro Photo Supply in Portland when she purchased the t6 and I have to admit that the process of her buying a new camera gave me the itch to upgrade from my D3100. I've been reading the PentaxForums for a couple years and had always wished I had a Pentax DSLR so I could participate more on these forums.

I did a lot of research on the various Pentax offerings compared to the Canon t6 and the Nikon D3400 and finally decided to purchase a Pentax K-70. The K-70 arrives tomorrow. Even though the K-70 was more expensive than the Nikon and Canon I do believe the K-70 offers better features, including a user interface that I personally find easier to navigate. I borrowed a friends K-50 for a weekend and that experience finalized my decision to go with the K-70.

So at the end of the day I picked Pentax because I think the camera really compares favorably and I've grown to really enjoy this community of Pentax users. I also have a thing for the underdog and doing things just a little different than the mainstream. Although I would like to see more signs of life from Pentax, I do also relish the fact that Pentax is decidedly not Nikon or Canon.

Good luck with your quest.

I'm looking for a Mac based photo storage application

For years I used iPhoto to download and store photos. That quickly proved to be a pain and insufficient. Then I switched to Google photos and have been pretty happy since all my photography has been jpg and 35mm film developed by thedarkroom.com and downloaded as jpg scans.

Now that I'm getting my first high quality DSLR (K-70), I want to start shooting RAW. Do any of you have recommendations for a good, stable, and efficient application for the Mac that I can download and store my files to? I've already downloaded Darktable and will try learning how to develop RAW images with that. I'm assuming it would be best to have a separate application to download off the memory card and store, and then use Darktable for developing.

I'm not finding the JJC RM-E7 on Amazon but did see this, JJC JM-PK1(II) Wireless Remote Control for Pentax K-70. If I understand correctly the one on Amazon now uses RF instead of IR so theoretically I would not need to be in front of the camera pointing at the IR sensor.

https://www.amazon.com/JJC-JM-PK1-Wireless-Control-Replaces/dp/B06XF1Z3BN/re...ums-20&ie=UTF8

EDIT: I did find the RM-E7 on Amazon by searching generically for "Pentax wireless remote". I think this is the one you are recommending:

I'm looking for recommendations on operating the remote shuttle release on the K-70. My camera arrives tomorrow so I don't have any hands on experience yet but from my understanding my choices are using the wifi app, the cabled remote CS-310, the wireless waterproof O-RC1, and the wireless remote control F. I'm looking for simplicity and reliability so I'm leaning towards the CS-310 cable but I also don't want to ignore the wireless options if they are working as intended.

Just curious, what was the sale price on the K-70? I have one on the way now from Adorama that I paid $796 for (camera body, 18-135mm, camera bag, 3 filters, and some Corel software).
