Was your Moon photo hand-held? I've realized that these mirror lenses need a tripod or at least a monopod, unless I'm shooting at a very high shutter speed in sunlit situations.

What mode were you shooting in? In some modes (maybe aperture priority?) my K-S2 will reliably give an in-focus indicator.

But practice, followed by more practice, is what these lenses require!

Interesting shots.... What kind of bird is that, and where does it call home?

My Sigma 600 for Pentax, I think, has been a good, solidly-built lens with good optics. It's the grey one. I think of it as heavy enough that I can use it only on a tripod no matter what the situation. The mirror remains in very good shape, after owning the lens since mid-2017. (I used it for the total solar eclipse that year and posted successful shots of the results in this forum earlier.)

I recently bought (again) a Tokina 500mm mirror lens for my Pentax K-S2, because I wanted to be able to hand-hold a lens of this reach. I've had very good results with it, knowing the limitations of mirror lenses.

My K-S2 brings up another question: It's the first camera I've owned with a live-view screen for photography (not just videography), and I'm wondering if any of you find the live view to be very helpful with careful focusing...

I've used a right-angle, 2x magnifying finder attachment on my camera to help with focus, and it has been very helpful. Wondering about the usefulness of live view for this purpose.

For the engineers out there-- aperture block , or battery failure?

I have a K-S2 with the "dreaded ABF," and I've read about the "fixes" that involve burst shooting, setting the RAW/Fx button, etc.

But is there a concensus that, in the long run, the issue will worsen and can be resolved only with the small malfunctioning horseshoe solenoid piece replaced with a working one?

Thanks!

This is essentially what I've found with another older Pentax DSLR, too. When I turned off some in-camera processing I had set, the camera returned to much quicker readiness for the next shot...

Thanks,

That point of light on the far left is the star Regulus, in the constellation Leo the Lion.

When I first saw it, I checked both my sky map app and photos by others, because I thought it might, indeed, have been a hot pixel. But, sure enough, that's the exact location of Regulus!

These were shot during the 2-minute, 38-second long eclipse total phase Aug. 21 in western Kentucky. I had spent a lot of time practicing and deciding which settings I needed. I think I was rewarded with creditable photos.

Thanks, Michael!

Yeah, I've been an avid amateur astronomer for a long time, :) and I have two filters I'm trying... One is made with Baader solar filter material, and the other is the Seymour solar filter. I'm planning to experiment with both of them in the coming months to find out which will do a better job...

I'm hoping we'll have a few sunspots of enough size to show up in photos during the eclipse....Otherwise, it will be a pretty blank (maybe even bland?) sun being eclipsed by the moon....at least until totality!

No stupid questions...!

My experience with that very lens and my K-r is that when I turn the camera on, the display wants to know the focal length, which I then set. If I have the K-r set on aperture priority, it seems to auto-detect the f/8, and it will take appropriate photos. That's my recollection, because once I bought the 600mm f/8 Sigma, I haven't used the 500mm in a while. In fact, I have it for sale online.

I hope this helps.

After having read through this forum over the last few weeks, I decided to start adding photos I've taken with a recently acquired Sigma 600mm f/8 mirror lens for my Pentax K-r. I bought the lens with the aim of using it for the August total eclipse of the Sun.

I've spent some time taking experimental shots, including (of course!) some shots of the Moon. I'm getting more and more comfortable with the lens and taking better shots with it. I really like the lens and I've come to terms with its limitations; I think it should work well for eclipse shot as well as some more static terrestrial shots, as well, perhaps including bird shots in the fields behind our house, which have a variety of wild birds....

K-r and Sigma 17-50 zoom lens.

BINGO! That's exactly what I'm seeing.... There are two points in my lens' zoom range at which this happens, too!

Interestingly, if I turn the zoom ring very fast, it doesn't happen at all....

Since this lens is well out of warranty, where would I find a place to have it repaired (Sigma, U.S.A.?) and would it cost far less than a new lens?

Thanks...

Mike

K-r and Sigma 17-50 zoom lens.

Adam,

In fact, I have tried disabling the OS with that switch on the side...to no avail. I also tried disabling the K-r's stabilization, too...STILL have this problem. (Hmmmm.... Did I disable both of them? I'll have to check that, too...)

I might add that all but one of the two to three dozen photos I shot using the camera / lens combination turned out to be in focus, after this problem showed up a few days ago! As long as I let the lens' image-shakiness stop, the picture was fine...

I need to try this lens on another Pentax camera or two to see what happens!

Thanks!

K-r and Sigma 17-50 zoom lens.

I have used my K-r for several years with a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM lens with no trouble.

Recently, however, I noticed a "rattling" sound and a shaking of the image in the viewfinder when I attached the lens, turned the camera on, and used the zoom ring to zoom in. At two points in the zoom range, this would happen.

With the camera turned off, the lens did not rattle, nor did the image through the viewfinder shake when turning the zoom ring.

I looked into the front of the lens while doing this, and saw the smaller, middle lens element(s) which move back and forth during zooming also moving from side to side while zooming with the camera in the on position... which explains why I see and hear what I do.

What might cause this?

No other lens does it!

Is there possibly an issue with the electronic communication between the camera body and this particular lens?

Thanks,

Mike
