Hi Bob, thanks for your comment!
It was a great session that day, spending time in a dear friend's apt she lended us for that matter. The only source of light is natural light passing through these beautifuly high windows, typical of Haussmannian buildings in Paris..

Here's another one with Mei.
Different session, different vibe, different location.
Mamiya Press Universal + Ilford (cant remember which one)

Ah, sorry! Not all are dancers, but all are close friends I often work with. I just updated the gallery with a few images I captured of my friend Franklin, a couple of weeks ago. Check it out!

Hi Steve,

That's shot with a Pentax 67 + 105mm, probably around 1/60s @f2.4, captured on Ilford FP4 and processed with Cinestill Df96 monobath.

Cheers,
J.

There might a difference from region to region when it comes to what camera / price / hype, which is probably induced by the buying power in a specific region, or the availability.

How do you turn on your insiperation?

To bring my experience on the topic, my practice is split between 2 streams.

On the one hand, I'll be documenting our life, at home. Capturing images for a photo diary, to share with friends and family, record life as it is, without any other agenda really. Inspiration comes very naturally because of the nature of the images: snippets of life, moments with friends, good food, celebrating every moment.

On the other hand, I'm working on series for my abstract practice. When it comes to this side of my work, it's slightly more 'complex'. I read a bit, listen to music a lot. Many different styles, from hip hop to traditional gamelan ensemble. I binge watch series and movies, cook every day, do some gardening... I take long walks with a friend, analogue photography aficionado and architecte. We talk about architecture, art, literature, and all kinds of other topics. I have the chance to be surrounded with creative people. I work with dancers, choreographers, my wife is a producer.

All that puts me in a very interesting place when it comes to being inspired. It comes from what I hear, what I listen, what I draw, what I see or watch. It comes from being able to pause and stare, or gaze. It comes from business or emptiness. I think, it comes mainly from being a meditative practice..

And gear has its part as well.

Each camera I own invites me to capture things and life differently, and focus on different details of it. It isn't the object itself, but more the aspect ratio of the film. I work from 1/2 frame up to 4x5 (which I sold), and having so many options helps putting myself onto new trains of thoughts and creative processes.

Hope it helps you a bit!

Cheers, J.

The price tag due the popularity of a camera doesn’t seem to follow the rarity logic anymore.
Many cameras are potential paper weights yet their demand get higher every month.

I’m very close to my dealer and we always spend a moment almost every 2 weeks chatting about trends.

He told me this story, which might not be an isolated case, of this client of his who absolutely wanted a M6 because she read so many things about it, watched so many YouTube videos, etc.
He sold her one. She fell in love with the object instantly, but out of frustration, not knowing how to work with such simple tool, and a rangefinder, she came back after a few weeks saying it was faulty because not one of her pictures was on focus or sharp.. eventually she admitted the didn’t like RF and she had read a lot about MF, wanted a RB because that was the it camera if the moment..

After advising her to get something else lighter and less of a pain to fix if it failed, she ended up getting a P67.

2 of the hottest cameras, bought and swapped impulsively with no prior film experience, because they were put on trend by influencers.

What I mean is, when one wants to get into film, I find logic to invite one to ask around and try what’s out there and make an educated decision based on their connection with the object. So many posts everywhere asking for the best camera, and people dropping the same models again and again. It doesn’t help diversity and curiosity. Also potential buyers should really take the time to do their homework and document themselves properly instead of just watching a couple of videos, most praising the same stuff..

What do you guys think?
