I Came Back To The K-1 And I'm Glad I Did!

Nice discussion.

I like using different bodies about as well as I do different lenses. Sometimes even Pentax lenses on my M43 bodies (harder to go the other way). Some of the bodies are quite old (2010?) and yet they all work. In fact the differences are not nearly as great as all the blather would lead one to believe; as long as they've got a shutter button and can get the image to my computer they work great.

But I do appreciate using an optical viewfinder at times; I think Pentax is right about that. I love my EVF cameras too, but sometimes it's just a nicer experience to use it.

It reminds me of my car friends. They're all gearheads, and while they'll certainly argue one is better than another for certain things, etc, they all love them all. They'd take ANYTHING out there onto the track, even a lawnmower. I sometimes wish we had the forum equivalent of a LeMons race: you could only post pictures if the camera + lens cost say $100US or less. Force everyone back to basics.

You're not silly, you just didn't note the dates. Events moved on since my original post. But yeah, if the mods want to remove it, fine with me. I can review them elsewhere.

Thanks, but I have already dealt with and corresponded with several people who work there, and aside from getting my money back the transaction is over. Bought the equipment from other sources.

I've bought lots of computer and photo equipment from B&H over the years, but a recent order has soured me on them forever. Basically they tried to rip me off, got caught, and refused to honor the sale.

I bought a used package with camera, lens, and viewfinder.

But when I received it, I discovered they'd sent an inferior viewfinder and inferior lens (probably well over $200 difference in price new).

When I pointed out the "error" in the VF, they offered a $35 credit. Way less than the original difference in price, but fine, they're hard to find.

Then I requested they send me the correct lens. They have several in stock, used, and I could send back the incorrect one. But no; the supervisor refused. He said they couldn't send a more expensive lens...despite the fact that is this EXACTLY the lens they advertised, that I bought and paid for. In other words, they refused to honor their contract even though they had the goods.

This isn't a misprint or error in price, this is an attempt to sell one thing and substitute cheaper goods. It's sleazy.

I'll off course return the whole package, and all the other items I ordered at the same time, but I'm down with them. There are other sellers that don't attempt to cheat their customers.

Astronomik Clip-Filter for Pentax K-1

Can't say I disagree. I have converted mirrorless and they're great. Even some lens that have hot spots on other bodies don't on mine. I do have a converted K-01, but it has trouble with some lenses. Mirrorless also doesn't have the same hassles with VF, focusing, etc.

Ever try gels? I've mounted them in adapters I use with M43 converted cameras for fisheyes, etc, and works semi-OK. The big wides don't have the sharpness of some of my other lenses, so a decent compromise. Some tape the gel on the back of the lens, but my lens has a bit of a bulge back there. I use a K-01 too. Having a flapping mirror would of course complicate matters.

Yeah, I've got that lens and it does work well.

I've also been using the 18-135mm 3.5/5.6, and that works very well. Doesn't seem to have the infrared hot spot that has been reported elsewhere at least on the K-01. The Pentax F 35-70mm 3.5 also produces good results.

As noted elsewhere, I just wish I could figure out a way to get a gel filter inside it behind the lens.

32" 4K monitor for photo editing

I've got a Dell P2415Q as a second monitor for an iMac and it's great. 99% RGB, and it was easy to calibrate with my Xrite. That gives a PPI of 183, not as good as my iMac but quite decent, especially if you want to proof for say displaying images on today's mobile phones, tablets and other high res devices. Rotates to portrait mode too. And with the smaller screen size, easier to fit on some desks, and given the higher PPI a nice choice if you sit closer. With the 4k you can get a lot of your photo on the screen at 1:1, and you can fit a lot more thumbnails in a grid view and still see if say they're in focus, which I find to be a real time saver.

macOS does a terrific job of managing the size using hires graphics, and all the Adobe applications are retina aware. I think Adobe uses hires graphics for 4k resolutions on Windows as well, but not as sure about that. But if your computer can do 4k, and you can live with a non 100% AdobeRGB or P3 monitor, check it out.

Older manual K mount lenses and infinity focus

I seem to have problems getting my old non-A, ancient Pentax lenses to focus to infinity on the K-01. They just don't seem to reach it, at least an SMC 28mm Pentax 3.5 and a 50mm Pentax 2.0. Both work fine on other bodies. And more modern lenses work on the K-01. Just incompatible?

Using gel filter BEHIND lens?

Too bad they don't offer an STC filter for the K-01, but I can certainly understand why they wouldn't. They have them for a bunch of other Pentax models though.

The K-01 has so much room behind the lens I'm tempted to stuff a gel in there. I could store lunch in there, but the sides are kind of uneven, and there are some contacts and other things I wouldn't want to touch. And if I used gaffer's tape like the video, I'm afraid it could come loose and hit shutter or sensor, which would Be Bad.

There are lens adapters with drop in filters, like for PK to M43 adapters. And some lenses have drop in filters too.

I suppose one could try using a macro tube and put one in, but the tube itself won't work on the UWA lenses I'm interested in.

Maybe one could get one like the STC and attack it with a Dremel to get it to fit.

I'll keep looking; thanks.

Using gel filter BEHIND lens?

Here's the hack that got me thinking about using the gel with a lens that doesn't have a holder like the Irix (BTW, they sell some 30mm gels precut to fit I believe). Basically just cut and attach with a bit of gaffer's tape. Note the lens in this video has a bit of a recess. Other UWAs I've had, like my Pentax mount, seem to have a rounded rear element that protrudes a bit. So might not fit.

Using gel filter BEHIND lens?

Anyone ever use a gel filter on the rear element of a lens in a K-01? I'd be reluctant to try it on a lens without a rear holder on a Pentax with a mirror flopping around nearby, but the K-01 seems to have room (for those wondering why, it's a technique used with UWA lenses like fisheyes that can't use front-mounted filters).

I remember when I was looking at used cameras, and considered it, but got an M43 instead. A huge thing for me was the lack of an EVF. Displays hadn't yet gotten as good as they are now, and some of the ones out there (remember, P&S cameras were more prevalent back in the day) were just mirrors in bright outdoor light.

One thing I thought was rather nice, and appreciate even more today, is that no adapter was required to use existing lenses. These days, I would that that even more important, especially with FF sensors, as once you stick on a lens it's hard to see the weight or size difference of mirrorless/DSLR. Certainly compared to say my M43.

I could definitely see my next Pentax being a mirrorless, but not with any adapter.

A Workflow Issue to do with LR (Presets and Luts) and 'Edit In' PS (advanced fixes).

Thanks; now I understand. But oof, no idea how to deal with that. I'd suggest asking on a Ps forum, since I think it might have to do with some differences in how layering is working in a pixel editor. Dealing with groups of parametric edits in Lr is complex enough, but since layers are blended I would just guess it's even more complicated. But both are out of my league, although your helpful video has shown me that some problems I had in the past, on just a few images, might be the result of the same order of work. If you do discover why this is happening, please post back here, and good luck!
