New FF body or new lens - which will make more of a difference in image quality?

k1, no question. The low light and high iso capability, plus abilty to use 1:1 crop lens beats any aps-c pentax except if you need a light portable camera to hike with

K1 users: what lenses do you use?

Out of all the ff lenses I have- the 35mm f2, 50 macro 2.8, 77mm legend, the lense I am using the most on the k1 for paid work isn't even ff. It's the 50-135 in 1:1 crop mode. Would I buy a ff zoom - yes probably, but the 50-135 is doing good enough that my clients haven't asked for otherwise.

I said to myself that I won't buy 50-135 again

I've been using the 50-135 in crop 1:1 mode on a k1. It's become my most used lens photographing contemporary dance because it's compact and fast auto focusing. I am lucky to have a good copy I bought used.

The RP is pared down compared to the Canon R, everything is relative. There's a reason it's cheaper. A $900 kit lens is definitely expensive, when you compare it to the Pentax K1 kit lens; and sadly defeats the purpose of a cheap mirrorless. We will have to wait and see if it their lens is as good as the 28-105 for Pentax. [We're in a pentax forum after all!]

No debate mirrorless cameras are lighter and getting cheaper, and that benefits the overall market. But some of us are vested in Pentax, and we're such a small minority of global camera users. Here's hoping Pentax can continue to carve out their niche and survive.

Did anyone also notice how expensive Canon's 28-105 f4 kit lens is? It's $900 on top of the body! $2,199 for a pared down mirrorless is not a bargain. It looks like they are going the Sony route. $$$$ lens.

Full-frame bodies were always going to drop in price. I'm very happy with the lens lineup of Pentax though – the cost (imo) is much more affordable, and we get many unique ones (like the FA limiteds).

I keep it pretty simple: the DFA 50mm f2.8 macro, SMC 55mm f1.8, and for inside scenes and low light the 77 and the FA 35 f2. Waiting for a fast ultra wide.

I have several da zooms but use them with the k3 which is better for carrying long distances outside.

press your menu button
In the 4th screen for camera, you'll find Memory
It's likely the Sensitivity option was deselected

I couldn't find a menu option for af either, but you can use the top lcd for choosing the focus mode. Press the Af Mode button on the left side of the mount and use the front and rear dials to change the settings.

---------- Post added 02-08-19 at 01:21 AM ----------

And you can use the delete button / meter button with the dials too, to change the metering via the top lcd

RE: wifi. For downloading many jpegs, it works fine, for RAW, prepare your hotel window.

Lambic, you can easily find used K3s that are cheaper than a new K70, with fairly low mileage too. The k3 is an outstanding camera.

Flash issues on K-1 II

Ash, couple of things you can check: is the power output on the flash set to 1/1? Also both the camera and flash have compensation that can be set. Otherwise it could be distance/angle/reflectivity of the bounce.

(BTW my name is also Ash!)

It's often useful to turn off memory in the settings of the camera; I've had the same problem with exp comp on initial shots after a prolonged period between shooting- ie we forget its been set previously. Even more important now on the k1 and kp which don't have exp comp on a top lcd for easy refernce. Luckily, the k1 allows you to reset the exposure compensation between power cycles by disabling the memory for it. (By default memory is enabled, so you would have to turn it off in settings). I also disable drive memory and white balance.

Lens Suggestion - 42nd Street Photo; Sub-$600 or So

If I was comparing the 10-20 and 17-50, I wouldn't be considering 3.5 vs 2.8 (which imo is a wash, given you would have to stop down on both anyway). They are very different focal lengths.

But if you're really looking for better indoor low-light (handheld?) performance what you might need is a better camera? The newer models like the KP and K1 allow you to shoot at much much higher ISOs (so you'll get a faster shutter), and will far exceed what you will get with a 3.5 vs 2.8 aperture difference. Or consider getting into flash photography :)

Honestly I enjoyed my sigma 10-20 for many years👌 provides a totally new set of images and perspectives that makes the other focal lengths (except macro) look very pedestrian

Everyone, thanks for your feedback, I've learned alot from your posts, and have decided to pass on the k1 for now. It's really only low light I'm after. So hoping to look at the KP or wait for a new aps-c flagship.

Have a great weekend shooting!

If there are any Vancouver based Canadians, the k1 is on Craigslist for $1650 cdn. 660 shots.

thanks. I'm starting to see a consensus that a KP might be a better option for low light and size while keeping compatibility with my lenses. I hadn't really considered the kp because of the lack of top lcd, but I'll have look again

I prefer landscapes, although as of late - home portraits (have a 3 month old baby). Low light is a problem inside, and although I have a flash setup with cactus v6ii and tripods, I often don't have time to set a scene up; so am shooting the 77 handheld at high iso.

Hiking and travel is a regular pursuit for landscape, so I travel with the 20-40 as general purpose (which I love).

A long time ago I did wide angle, but haven't used my 10-20 in many years.

Lastly, I photograph indoor macro (lego believe it or not!) but on a tripod with controlled light sources.

Thanks for everyone's opinions. Still haven't purchased the camera.

I've always intended to shoot full-frame, given that I had takumars and film lenses before dslrs. (My first dslr was the ist *ds, bought to use my dad's takumars from the 70s)

I agree aps-c and ff are complimentary systems with avantages to each.

I had a look at the iso noise for the k1 compared to the k3. Outstanding. I find my 77mm too long on the k3, I think it would make a great portait lense on the k1.

Thanks for the advice. I'll buy it. Worst case it doesn't work out and I sell it.
