I have the older, less powerful af48 model and it is great. This will work almost for anything if you know what you're doing.

LiFePO4 and other AA size high voltage batteries.

So far I am happy with them. They perfectly fit the way I use the camera where I can leave the camera without use for a couple of weeks, shoot a dozen and leave it without use again. The batteries have less capacity but it doesn't worry me as I have 3 sets (3 pairs as the other pair is just dummy so don't have to replace it).

I finally settled on using 3 sets of LiFePO4 batteries:

They work when I want them and don't have to worry about discharged batteries after leaving them for a long time.

Pentax K-50 - Grrrrr.

As others have already said, you should have done a better job at researching what a DSLR can and can't do.

1. Have not idea why that happens but as long as photos come out ok ...

2. When shooting flash it is the flash that dictates (up to a point) subject freezing. You don't need very fast shutter speeds as the flash will stop motion. For very fast moving subjects or very low shutter speeds you'll get trailing. The reason the camera chooses 1/30 is to gather more ambient light so photos taken with a flash don't look as if they were shot in a coal mine. The DSLR gives you a lot of control so start shooting in M when using flash. Set shutter speed, aperture and ISO and flash will take care of proper exposure (up to a point). If you choose max sync speed though you might get properly exposed subjects but completely dark surrounding.

3. Point and shoot cameras don't have a shutter (mechanical one). If you want to use higher shutter speeds and flash you should start thinking on investing in a flash with HSS capabilities..

Most important though is to learn your camera and photography in general. If you don't take small steps at a time and learn your camera you'll be very frustrated.

I think Adam means that only the Japanese market/buyers will buy it i.e. it will not be successful in other markets.

LiFePO4 and other AA size high voltage batteries.

So far, I am happy with them.

Generally, I leave the camera a month without use, use it for a dozen of shots and then leave it without shooting again. For this type of shooting the batteries I bought are perfect.

Disadvantages:
  • Lower amount of photos per charge.

  • Cannot use the battery meter as the discharged voltage is 2.8v so well above fully charged NIMH.

I ordered 4 other batteries (4 Pcs AA 3 2V 1200mAh LiFePO4 Rechargeable 14500 Batteries 1 Years Warranty New | eBay) so I have always 2 sets ready to change.

Pretty happy with them.

HELP, suggestions - needed "spouse mode" on K-30

Best solution is to have extra batteries for the P&S.

Program mode maybe will solve your issues with exposure but uninterested people cannot understand how focus and DOF works.

So even if the camera might take properly exposed shots in Program mode, they might be out of focus.

Also, for social snapshots the P&S is unbeatable as it has very deep DOF and fairly fast lenses wide open (f2.8).

Do yourself and your dog a favor and invest in the doghouse as it seems you'll share it a lot more :)

Pentax K-50 and Sigma EF 610 DG ST Flash.

If you're using off-camera flashes with triggers it is cheaper to buy either old auto autothyristor flashes or cheap Chinese autothyristor flashes.

Careful about the Sigma as it might not work correctly if you use it with the K50. Pentax slightly changed the flash protocol so third party lenses need to have their firmware updated in order to work with new Pentax cameras.

That might not be good for Pentax/Ricoh as it shows that Pentax DSLR users stick to their cameras for a lot longer than Nikon which leads to less new cameras bought which leads to less money for R&D, new product production and marketing etc.

It is not 100% the only reasoning but it does make sense. The Pentax cameras are too good for their own good :/

K-01 for sports, anybody?

I have shot a couple of indoor soccer matches with the Pentax K100D and K-X. I don't know how different the K-01 AF is compared to those but I found out that AF was not an issue, generally. I used the Sigma 28-70 F/2.8 at around F/5.0 for more DOF.

The main issues I found were the very low light where I had to use the flash and high ISO for better light distribution.

The other thing you need to figure out is where the action will be so you can anticipate the moves.

This is a shot I took with the K-X:

Great camera but I think the Olympus XZ-2 might be stealing its glory. It has the same specs plus the hot shoe and the possibility to add the very nice digital viewfinder.

Saying "no... just... no" brings no information to the discussion you are trying to start. Please explain why.

In the mean time power in W = volts x amps. The motor draws a constant amount of amps so if you increase voltage you increase power.

With 1.2v NIMH you have 4.8X power (where X=amps).

With LIFEPO4 batteries you have 6.4X power (where X=amps).

Prove me wrong.

First update:

Initially the batteries were charge around 10 min before the charger showed green light.

First discharge:

Photos: ~ 100, ~80% with flash.

Video: ~ 10 - 12 min

Lots of viewing and reviewing, 3sec after shot review.

Time: ~ 2 weeks

The af is faster because of the higher voltage the a/f motor has more torque to turn the screw lenses (90% of the shots were taken with FA 50 f/1.4).

The camera is also lighter as the batteries themselves are very light and the two supplied dummy batteries are also very light since they are hollow.

Cons: You cannot rely on the battery meter as after turning yellow you can take around 3 - 5 shots before dying.

Full recharge took around 2 hrs.

Will keep you updated but so far I think it is a good investment for the type of shooting I do.

Just a clarification on what is considered a post:

Is it a new thread/discussion or do replies to existing threads count as well?

Bought the "kit" in the link I posted. It arrived today after about 4 weeks of wait (normal for shipments from china).

The batteries were already charged as the green light in the charger turned green after 10 min or so.

Tried in the camera without an apparent ill effects.

Will try again periodically to check how long they hold the charge.

I care more about low self-discharge rate rather than outright endurance as I find myself taking a dozen or so pictures every now and then.

I'll keep you updated in this thread.
