Please forgive me if this is not the right forum.

Hi Folks,

So the new line-up of my old band is performing at a private event on Feb 12 (Saturday evening) in the South Bay area (Sunnyvale, CA). We wanted someone to take photographs of the band and I thought I might as well see if someone at Pentax forums would be willing to help out.

What you can expect:
- Compensation. If interested, please let me know what you expect to receive as a fair compensation and I will discuss with the band to see if that works for us.

- The event has a $25 entry fee, which the band will pay for you. This should be good for food and alcohol. :D

- Given this is a private event, I don't think that we will have colored lights. The lighting conditions might be fairly harsh and unfavorable.

- A night of good, music. We play fusion and classic rock.

- Possibly tinnitus if you don't already have it, worsening if you do. I can provide you with good earplugs :D

What we expect:
- A few good portraits of individual band members, the band as a whole and our setup, the crowd. Things that we can possibly use for our website, with due credits accorded to the photographer.

- Some sample photographs from your portfolio. Ideally those from a similar shoot / any gig / concert.

- An easy going, friendly attitude.

If there is anyone out here who might be interested, please send me a message.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot Soppy! I'll play with the contrast and pull the foreground details a bit to see if it improves the image.

Thanks a lot for the critique folks! I'll work on the highlights. I tried a cropped version earlier, but it didn't work too well for me. Nevertheless, much appreciated.

I have issues with the composition here. Her body facing the left edge of the frame and her eyelines in the other direction makes it really hard on my eyes. I think that a mirror image of this crop would be much better. Your original crop is much easier on the eyes in this regard. On the other hand, there she is looking out of the frame :D. Apart from that, I like the PP and the shot.

With a wide angle lens you will need a cpl with a low profile frame to reduce vignetting. I use the Hoya 77mm DMC PRO1 on my sigma 10-20 and I love it. The thing that I don't like is that the thin frame leads to an occasional stuck filter, which is what happened on my previous outing when the filter got stuck on my lens rather badly. I had to use these filter wrenches and it came off within seconds.

I like the tighter crop better, although it loses context.

Thanks folks.

Clark, I think that pulling more detail from the shadows will distract attention from the subject. For this reason, I consciously let them clip at the bottom of the frame and pulled up only enough detail on the top and sides to give a sense of what the frame is composed off. I'm also unclear about why you think this would work as a portrait, can you please elaborate?

I don't have experience shooting / critiquing portraits, so you can take my opinion with a pinch (or more) of salt.

IMO, the crop is quite tight and the lighting on her face a bit harsh for my taste. I like the expression on her face though.

Thanks for the critique clark. FYI, except for my usual camera calibration, the saturation was unchanged. If you ever hike Bryce, you will realize that quite a bit of Bryce is actually this red. The blue saturation was actually reduced.

I find the white object behind the head, the dove on the left and the twig near the feet very distracting. The dove on the left is the most distracting. Apart from that, nice detail on the feathers.

Thanks specialk. I wanted a similar photograph. However, it was a bit busy to get the shot without people intruding, and my friends were getting too impatient with me for me to wait long enough ;-).
