looking for assistance -WDW Annual Flower & Garden Festival and other info

I’ve been twice. The DIS Unplugged crew call it the “Flower & Garden & Food & Wine Festival.“ In other words, it’s not much different than the food and wine festival (not that it’s a bad thing, it just doesn’t really feature flowers or gardens). They have flowers, but not really in a way to display them for photography. The butterfly exhibit is fun to photograph, you’ll need something moderately long. Last March I used the 55-300 PLM and it was perfect, but you could get away with 100mm or so and still get close enough to get good shots. I’d most pictures, but I’ve exceeded my quota.

Underwater cameras & techniques

I just returned from Hawaii and used a EWA-Marine bag for both my K-1 and K3. I only had mixed results, it’s far more difficult than above water photography. I also used a Pentax WG-III and it did okay. My wife shot video with a GoPro Hero 4 and those aren’t bad. I’m a total Pentax/Ricoh fanboy, but my advice is if you’re going to get an underwater point and shoot, get the Olympus Tough TG-6. The main reason is it has raw support. I like editing my photos using all the colors in the Crayola box, not the .jpg limits. The Ricoh’s are nice and excellently rugged, but they are limiting.
FYI: For the next trip to the Islands I think I’m going to buy a SeaFrog case ($299) and a Sony A6***. I’ll add some type of lights to the cold shoe.
Have a great trip.

Is the 43mm really that bad? (APS-C)

On a K-5 get the DA-40. At f/2.8 it’s better than the 43 at that aperture and it’s so much fun to use. The colors are wonderful.

Longer Telephoto Lens for the K-1

The DA 55-300 PLM is very good. Yeah, it’s a crop lens, but that’s not a bug, it’s a feature. It crops to 450mm on the long end. It’s relatively small and the focus is fast. Very fast. F/6.3 on the long end is a definite drawback in non-daylight conditions. Other than that it’s a terrific lens.

Three Amigos: Completing the Collection in Black or Silver?

They’re not on the camera at the same time so the only time to admire if they match each other is on the shelf, in the bag... The silver lenses are beautiful. My 31 and 43 are black, my 77 is silver. It doesn’t bother me it doesn’t match the other two. For my quintuplets, my 21 and 35 are black, my 15, 40 and 70 are silver.

Help choosing a flash for point and shoot and maybe a little more

KEH has three Pentax 540 flashes for sale for under $200. Aim it at the ceiling or walls and fire away. Another option is aim it straight up and use a Stofen bounce (or less expensive alternative). It will ďupsetĒ the balance of your K-70 a little, but youíll soon get used to it and you will enjoy the pictures of your grandson for the rest of your life. It will be worth it. The other option is to put the flash on a stand and fire it with the K-70ís pop up flash.

K1 users: what lenses do you use?

My travel kit usually consists of the three amigos (FA 31, 43 and 77), and the FA 20. If I think thereís a chance of needing something long Iíll add the 55-300 (PLM version) and shoot in crop mode. If Iím expecting tight quarters Iíll bring the 17-28 fisheye. If Iím expecting rain Iíll use the D FA 24-70 or the D FA 28-105.

Pentax ME Super dark band on some shots, some not developing at all

Several years ago my ME Super was doing the same thing. I took it to a camera repair place replaced the shutter mechanism. The repairman said the shutter was dirty and sticking. You might try to (gently) blow it out with some compressed air.

Be sure to turn on Highlight Alerts and watch for the dreaded flashing red of blown out highlights. I’ve shot several bands and the spotlights are pretty bright compared to the rest of the room. Set your Exposure Compensation somewhere around -2.0 and -3.0.

I wish Pentax would release a K-01 ii, or even a completely new design. I have all five DA Limiteds and would love to use them on a good mirrorless APS-C body.

I haven’t bought a GR yet (waiting for the “new” version - any time now...?), but I’ve been lurking here and elsewhere for a few months for information on the GRs. There are some terrific videos on YouTube about how to use them. I don’t have one yet, but I feel I’ll be ready to use it as soon as I open the box just from watching the videos. I am at an advantage over you because I’m very familiar with digital, but I do think the videos will help you too. Good luck, enjoy your camera and post some shots please.

FA 43 ltd vs FA 77 ltd, Wide Open

I have the triplets and all are incredible. The 77 has a little more pop, but is less useful (at least the way I generally shoot) as a walk around lens. I can go all day with the 43 on, and not feel I need to change lenses. The 77 leaves me wishing I had something wider. YMMV. Whichever you decide, you’ll have magic. Have fun!

Can you explain what the max shutter speed setting is and what it does? I don’t have a KP and am unsure what this does.

I like it. I think I would turn the tape around so it sticks to the inside of the collar, that way it won’t interfere with hand holding the lens.

Getting Cactus V6ii or RF60x to trigger a Metzblitz 44-AF2?
Posted By BWG
Replies: 10
Another way of explaining it is you have two different systems, Pentax optical and Cactus radio. They are not really interchangeable. The beauty of the Cactus setup is you can use some Pentax, Nikon, Canon or third parties flashes (I stress some - maybe the Metz?) on a V6ii in receiver mode and have total control from the V6ii transmitter on the camera body.

The V6ii can’t fire the Metz. You need second V6ii in rx mode with the Metz on it (if Cactus supports the Metz, you’ll need to check their list of comparable flashes). The V6ii supports in rx mode supports the Pentax, Canon, Nikon and many of their third party compatable flashes.
Some ttl flashes can be programmed to work with the V6ii.

Has anyone tried this combo and does it give P-TTL? I have neither, but am very tempted to get a GR ii (although if you believe the rumor the GR iii will be out in September - weíll see). Anyway, I was thinking a little better flash than the pop-up would be nice and the 201 seems better (tilt...) than the Ricoh GF-1.
If this question has been asked and answered already I apologize, I couldnít find it.

Auto ISO, the parameters will depend on conditions (e.g 100-800 or 100-3200...). And program line to mtf, Iíll adjust aperture if I feel the need to change the DOF.
