Big glass. Why complain about weight?

Expanding on this, the new Sony 600mm f4 is just 3kg. The Pentax FA 600mm f4 is over 6.8kg. I'd love to see some modern long prime glass from Pentax, though I admit I'd never be able to afford it. I just recently picked up an A 300/2.8, it's a gem and I have no complaints about the weight

Hi Vasyl,

FYI the photos you have posted are not working for me.

As for aerial photography, I'm currently working on my own drone featuring a Ricoh GR II. I currently have a working prototype, just have to find the time to give it a good run.

That is obscene Graeme, Iíve priced up a few individual components before and found them to be very expensive.. but that is just ridiculous.

If youíre interested in trying one, send me a PM. I think I may have some old prototypes lying around you can have if you cover postage. Or I could print you the full kit for a fraction of that quote.

I havenít tried the lens you mentioned, but with some measurements I might be able to come up with an adapter for it. Is that the only lens you were planning on using with it?

Thanks to all those that have contributed. I've attached an image of one of the first photos I've taken with the new setup. Apologies for the delay, had to abruptly travel away for work for the last 5 weeks.

As always, happy to hear opinions on how I might improve the light, I'll be back to tinkering with this over the next couple of weeks.

Well, here's my macro flash diffuser version 1.0. I found a "C Bracket" that a bought a few years ago, I'm not sure what I intended to use it for but it seems to work well here. I 3D printed a cradle for the flash with a tripod thread on the bottom to attach to the C bracket, and of course a new (smaller) flash diffuser to match. Included some attachment points for straps on the cradle to fasten the flash, it's not very elegant but it seems to fit all the flashes I have lying around well enough. Will test it out a little tomorrow, if it goes well I'll refine the design further.

Any thoughts on the current iteration?

Your ring flash sounds surprisingly bright. I do like my ring flash, but I found it difficult to diffuse nicely.. this was my solution: Macro ringflash softbox diffuser for Pentax AF160FC by Arachnorchis - Thingiverse

---------- Post added 11-07-18 at 09:08 PM ----------

That's a shame, the AF160 is a gem. I have seen them pop up used occasionally. It wouldn't surprise me if there are still some new ones floating around at some retailers.

Brilliant, results with your pringles tin are surprisingly good!

Nass, this is some of the best lighting examples I've seen, thanks for sharing. I really like your idea of getting the flash closer, rather than having an enormous diffuser. I'll definitely model and 3D print something similar to try.

Goes to show you don't need to get too fancy to get good results, thanks for your input WPRESTO!

Adding adjustable extension would be amazing, I'll need to think about how that would be possible. A simple spacer could be easily done but much less convenient.

Could you elaborate on the sphecteral (specular?) highlights, and how one would go about changing them?

Thanks SSGGeezer, appreciate the input.

Diffuser of choice at the moment is ~2mm thick piece of foam.

Weight is certainly a concern- especially with the awful plastic mount on my pentax AF-540 flash. They weigh in at about 250 grams, another 100 grams with the Lume Cube. My brother has been using his setup, complete with the Lume Cube for about a year now with no issues regarding weight, even on tiny flashes like the nissin pictured.

Do you diffuse your light at all? I imagine the LED ring would be too dim with diffusion?

Hi all,

Looking for some inspiration! Macro flash diffusers must be one of the most common DIY projects that photographers undertake. Everyone has their own ideas as to what makes an ideal diffuser, I'd like to see yours/hear your thoughts!

I've been tinkering with 3D printed diffusers for a while now, I'd like to try and perfect the design more.

I've attached a few photos of what I've been working on-
Flash mounts are interchangeable.
Option to mount Lume Cube as a focus assist light.

The smaller diffuser is for my brothers micro four thirds setup. I found it too short for my Pentax DSLRS so designed something a little longer to overcome the prism hump/longer lens of my setup.

Robís correct, the model is just a touch under 200x200mm. Resolution shouldnít be a concern, as long as youíve got a heated bed and a build enclosure you should be able to print one of these on the da Vinci.

Hi all,

I continue to tinker with 3D printed camera accessories, I thought my latest creation might interest some here. I've made the design freely available on Thingiverse: Tamron - Pentax 150mm Filter Holder by Arachnorchis - Thingiverse

It's a large 150mm filter holder, notably it has:

Option to attach hinged "barn door" style hoods (I'm calling them petals), or sliding ones that can be removed/replaced instantly.
Allows full 360degree rotation.
Lens mounts are replaceable, mounts can be easily modified to suit different lenses.
Currently have mounts for the 15-30mm 2.8 and DA 25mm f4 645 lenses.

The goal was to create something that rivals the mass produced alternatives in terms of basic function, that can be made for a fraction of the cost.

Fusion 360 can export in several different formats, I'll need to do a bit of googling to work out which one would be the easiest to work with.

Absolutely I'd be keen for some collaboration. When you've got your 11-18mm send me a PM and we can perhaps create a filter system for it!

I'd love to see what you come up with robiles. I think it would be a very easy modification to allow some of my designs to mount 180mm filters, I'd be happy to share some files with you if you wanted to go that route. I have a prototype I've been playing with that allows two filters to be rotated independently from each other, I've been using it with the 15-30mm, a 150mm square GND and a 150mm square CPL. The only issue is, in it's current form, it vignettes quite heavily at the wider end, I've got some work to do to make it more compact.

The 150mm filter holders are particularly expensive, aren't they! That was entirely why I wanted to make my own.

Can you explain a little bit about why you would use a bahtinov mask? It's like a focusing aid for astrophotography? I might need to print one of these for myself..

You can upload a file to shapeways and they'll instantly give you a quote for it to be printed in a variety of materials. If you weren't on the other side of the globe I'd print it for you, but alas.
