OK, just a little bump. I've sold a lot of it, but the rest needs to go, especially since I sold both cameras! I literally have NO USE for any of this stuff without a camera to put them on. Please make an offer! Most of this stuff is like new.

McAfee's Knob, absolutely. Haven't made it to Dragon's Tooth yet (but my son has with his Scout Troop). Never heard of Tinker Cliffs. Where's that?

I totally messed up the listing on that lens. You're right. I just looked up (what I thought was) the lens on B&H and used that lens title. Thus the f/3.5 HSM designation.

My mistake in the listing! I have the K-3 listed at both $450 and $500. Clearly, I'll sell it for $450. I mean, I'd rather have $500....but I can't exactly raise the price at this point!

Yep, sorry about that! You can tell how much I used that lens now. I've edited the listing to reflect that change, and dropped the price $50. It's still a great lens, sells new at $450. This is practically new for $300.

I bought this lens a few weeks ago, with this trip in mind. Every photo taken in this album was taken with the 55-300. I shot them in RAW, color corrected in Photoshop (using Curves) and added a little sharpness using the Unsharp Mask. I had my ISO and shutter speed set to auto, and my aperture set to f/5.6 (I believe). I also used AF-C, with the back AF button and burst mode shooting. I have to admit, I was impressed with the sharpness of some of these photos.

Enjoy!

Awesome. I picked one up a few weeks ago to go with my K3. I haven't really done much with it yet, but i'm taking it (and the kids) skiing on Thursday. I hope to get some good shots!

Thoughts on the long zooms?

Actually, weather sealing is definitely a factor. If i'm heading out in the snow, i'd much rather have a lens that is weather sealed.

I think i'll go ahead and get the 55-300. Totally within the price range, has weather sealing, and it seems to get good reviews. I love my SIgma 17-50, and this will pair nicely with it. Thanks for the input, all!

I have a K-3, and my standard lens is the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8. I love this lens, and it rarely leaves my camera. However, at the end of January, we're going on a little ski trip. Also, within a few years, my wife and I plan to take an Alaskan cruise. In both cases, I think i'm going to need a little more reach than this lens is going to give me. I do have an older copy of the Tamron 18-200, but I keep it on my older K20D that my kids use for their high school assignments.

So, i'm looking for something affordable (sub $800) that has a longer reach. I'm really looking at the new HD 55-300, but the review hasn't been posted yet (I know, I know...you're working on it!). But when I peruse shopping sites like B&H, i'm also seeing lenses like the Tamron 28-300 ($420) or the Pentax DA 18-270 (which I assume is very similar tot he Tamron 18-200 I already have). Or even the Tamron 70-200. That one looks a little big, as i'll be mostly doing hand-held photography. No tripods.

Thoughts? Which of these lenses have you guys tried? What is the image quality like on these? Size and weight is something that needs to be taken into consideration. I think that it needs to have *at least* 200mm of reach, but more is better.

Man, if I had seen this a week ago, I would have snatched up the J-803. That's a sweet bag. But I have a leather satchel that I love, and I just bought a padded insert for it that makes it a great camera satchel. Good luck!

Pentax K-3 Power Adapter

I was going to do some time-lapse photography the other day, and realized that I didn't have the power to do what I wanted to do. I know that I could get the extra grip with a second battery, but the K-3 has a port to plug it in to power. Since I was inside, that would have been perfect, and a lot cheaper than the extra grip. Of course, it doesn't come with an adapter, and I can't find one on B&H or Ricoh's site.

Do they actually make a power adapter to plug my camera into the wall?

Converting Saddleback Leather Satchel into a padded camera bag

I have been using a Saddleback Leather satchel for a few years as my daily work bag, and occasional travel bag. For a camera bag, i've been using the LowePro Slingshot, but I think its better suited for storage or going on a dedicated shoot. However, when i'm wandering around Washington D.C. for three days in February, I don't want to take the SlingShot. I think that it looks too much like a camera bag, and it also has no way to hold things like a water bottle or my iPad.

I was looking at messenger bags on B&H, and i'm favoring various Domke bags or the Tenba Mini Satchel. But then I realized that I could use my leather satchel (which even has four D-rings on the bottom to strap on a tripod, and side pockets for water bottles), if it had padded dividers. Has anyone done this with this satchel, or a similar one? Suggestions?

Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 as good as primes?

I would, if you can afford it. The Sigma is just a better lens. Better IQ. Also give the Sigma 24-70mm some serious consideration.

My plan is to also, someday, get a "portrait" prime. Like a 77 or an 85. Those two lenses are all I need.

Mine has been great. I've had problems with backfocus issues on Pentax lenses and my Tamron on my K20D, but haven't seen it on my Sigma. However, I've literally only taken maybe 50 photos with it.

No problem. I got you mixed up with the poster who had commented that the OS version was the only version available for Pentax shooters. Apparently it's available in both OS and non-OS (which still doesn't make a lot of sense). Well, I say that without double-checking if all Pentax dSLR cameras have Shake Reduction. All three of mine do (K10D, K20D, K-5 IIs). I don't know about the rest. What happens if you combine a Pentax stabilized dSLR with an OS lens, and you have the OS active on the lens and in the camera? Does it make a difference? Does it affect the sharpness of the photos? Just curious.

Yep, I saw that this morning as I was perusing the review page (and after I had posted that the Pentax version didn't have OS).

Interesting, as it makes no sense to make OS lenses for Pentax DSLRs...as they are already optically stabilized. And when I went shopping for mine, I looked at B&H, Amazon, Adorama, and Beach Camera....some listed it as OS, and others didn't, and since they were all about the same price ($619) I just assumed they hadn't changed the product description from their Canon/Nikon listings. I ordered mine from B&H, and there is no OS option on it. On the attached picture, you can clearly see where the OS switch *would* be. But it's not there.

I can't compare it to the kit lens....I bought a K10D "back in the day" and replaced the kit lens with the Tamron 18-200mm. Then sold the kit lens on eBay. I haven't used it in six years, at least.

But the Tamron just wasn't helping the K-5 IIs....it was too soft. I haven't had a chance to shoot a lot with the Sigma, but what little I've done i'm really impressed with how sharp it is at all focal lengths. Unfortunately I've been really uninspired to go out and shoot much since I've gotten it, because we've just had grey, blah winter weather. I'm really looking forward to taking it to Southern Utah/Las Vegas this summer, though. Hoping for some spectacular sunrises/sunsets and desert landscape photography.

Not so. I bought this lens to pair with my K-5 IIs. The Pentax version does *not* have OS on it. You can see where that switch would be on the lens body, but it's just not there. While it's not clearly stated in any online sales description that I have yet to see, on B&H's site, if you go to the specifications tab on the lens' site, it does show that the lens is not optically stabilized.

When I bought my first DSLR (K10D) about 9 years ago, I chose Pentax because the film/photography guy at the hospital I worked at told me that he liked Pentax, and that I should look at them. I don't believe he shoots with one, but he was telling me how they basically invented the SLR camera. So, I started looking at them, read about the weather sealed bodies, Shake Reduction built into the camera, etc, etc and I was sold. But after a while, I realized I had back-focus issues. So, when I found out that the K20D had a way to fix this in the menu, I upgraded and sold the K10D. Then, about three weeks ago, I upgraded again to a K-5 IIs.

I have only seen two other Pentax shooters in all of my travels since I've been paying attention. Whenever I get talking to someone about their DSLR, I proudly show my Pentax, and when they ask why, I point out the weather sealing, built in SR, and overall build quality for the price. I also point out that it is compatible with every Pentax lens ever made. Ever. They usually try it out, and ooooh and ahhh over the build quality, and they openly wonder why Canon doesn't build in the Shake Reduction into the body. My sister-in-law is a Canon shooter (just upgraded from a Rebel to a 7D), and she has always commented about how she likes the feel of my Pentax DSLR.

You guys are killing me. I pulled the trigger this past week and bought a K5 IIs after seeing the resolution on so many great photos. Upgraded from my K20D (which isn't worth anything on resale, so i'll just keep it). But I got sick when it came, and it's just been miserable weather here. Just feeling better now, and I can't wait to get out and do some shooting with it.
