Pentax K-3 II successor on September 2020

Yup. As mentioned in the other (now locked) thread, the covid situation must have had an impact on the release of the new camera - just as it has impacted most industries in the world. It's hard to imagine otherwise. I don't think the delay is entirely voluntary.

The big camera manufacturers do seem to be launching new cameras, even during this time. Whether they get them manufactured somewhere else or in the same factory, I don't know. But when resources are scarce, the big boys always get moved to the front of the waiting line. Money talks.

How much are willing to shell out for Knew?

I think some of you may be over-estimating the importance of price. People do not choose brands simply based on their budgets. Their budgets set limits to what they can buy, but they don't directly dictate what they buy. If we were all that rational and reasonable, everyone would purchase the cheapest options out there. But this is not so. As a matter of fact, there are many other factors that matter far more to people than price, so even making this a cheap camera is not going to guarantee any kind of commercial success. Why? Because mirrorless cameras and DSLR cameras are luxury goods, not necessities. People tend to go for the cheapest option with regards to necessities, but not so with luxury goods.

Most ordinary people care far more about their image (not talking about photos, but their personal image) than they do about price. Hence why people pay more for an Iphone than a Sony phone, or a Canon/Sony/Nikon/Leica camera compared to a Pentax camera, even if they have the same features. People care about how the brand is viewed in the world at large, how they are viewed in relation to owning such a product, and they hold largely emotional and sentimental reasons for choosing whatever they choose. There are almost always cheaper options out there, but most people choose with their hearts first, and then with their wallets second (at least when we're talking about luxury goods).

Pentax's problem is neither quality nor price - it's the fact that the brand is not considered "cool" or "in", and that it is largely unknown among the general public, no matter how much we love the brand ourselves as Pentaxians. I personally think it's the coolest camera brand out there - but I'm in a microscopic minority.

Buying second hand may enable someone else to buy new, with the money they've gained by selling their used equipment. There's just no way to measure this.

Thank you all for your great responses. I am at work right now, but will define my needs more specifically when I get home. I will look into the different lenses already suggested as soon as time allows me. 🙂

Hello

I have a maximum budget of around 1000 euros/1200 dollars to spend on a 35mm lens. Which one would you recommend within my budget, and why?

It doesn't have to cost that much. That's just the most I would be willing to spend on a good 35.

It would be used on the K-1.

Oh, I'll keep up with the news out of interest, at the very least. Even though I can't really justify buying more cameras right now - but who knows down the line. It's never a fully closed chapter.. 😉

I had originally been planning to buy the K-new, but based on our discussions in this thread, I casually looked up deals on the K-1. I found a shop here who sells Pentax cameras, and even though they only had new K-1's listed on their website (the original K-1 and the K-1 mark 2), I found out after contacting them that they'd just gotten a used K-1 (original version) into their store (in mint condition), and they were willing to sell it to me at a great price. Way cheaper than the K-new is going to be going for (in my best guess). So I pulled the trigger on a K-1. Now I don't feel the need to buy the K-new as the K-1 will be more than plenty for my needs for quite a while. Then, if a new version of the K-1 is released a few years down the line, I can always upgrade to that. Thanks for the recommendation, guys. I am excited to join the full frame adventure!

I am not sure I would be able to find one of those in my country, though I am open to looking around Europe. How does the k-3II compare to the KP or K-70? Both those models are pretty cheap here from new. Could be a wiser upgrade than a flagship since I am inexperienced and need to build my lens collection anyway.

Oh, I am not saying they are bad or anything - I am perfectly happy with the quality. But my lenses are mostly older lenses, and a mix of brands. If I stumbled across a used K1 at a great price, I would certainly give it a reasonable consideration. After all, such a great camera does deserve being taken seriously.

Not a bad suggestion. I own a K100D Super and a K200D, and I am perfectly happy with the quality for my needs. I just feel like if I'm going to spend money on another camera, I can only justify it to myself by going for a great quality one that will be leaps and bounds ahead of my older cameras in features. 🙂

I am not loaded with any expensive lenses. I am just a beginner. They are full frame but not what anyone would call expensive or top glass. 🙂

I think you're right, luftfluss.

They're consciously marketing it as a flagship. With that title needs to follow ambitious performance, and as a consequence ambitious pricing. In a sense, it's a psychological thing. If you price it too cheaply, then people will not take it seriously, and will not look at it as a flagship/premium model.

It sounds odd, but it's true: sometimes when you raise the price of a product, it's easier to sell it than when it's cheap. Psychology plays a big role.

With that said, I'm frankly amazed at how well they're keeping this thing under wraps - especially compared to the competition, who face detailed leaks all the time. Apart from a few selectively chosen details, we know almost nothing about this camera, which makes me suspect that they may have something groundbreaking up their sleeves that they want to hide from their competitors.

I decided long ago that I was going to pre-order/buy the K-new, and after spending a bit of time considering it against the K-1, I've fallen back on my initial decision to buy the K-new. It's just the wait that is getting to me, and making me impatient. I need to relax. :D

Thank you Tex. I will wait and see like you suggested. There is no rush anyway, and I feel that the announcement is close either way, so it makes no sense to rush out and buy anything immediately. Unless I magically stumble upon some kind of no-brainer deal.

You're right. But the development of more cameras probably in part depends on the succes of this one. If it turns out to be a hard sell, and largely a loss for them, then the newly developed technology may not necessarily lead to other models. But yes.. We're all just guessing.

Some people mention that the camera is probably going to be cheap because Pentax usually is. But as a company I am not sure you want to be known as the cheaper brand - ideally you want to charge as much as you can, instead of selling at the bare minimum.

When you think of how many cameras they would have to sell to make up for the development cost of the new viewfinder mechanism alone, I doubt they are going to make money on these cameras. If it is true that they have spent years working on it, the salaries alone to their R&D employees will be hard to recoup. But I think camera bodies are largely made to sell lenses anyway.

I have never owned a full frame digital camera, so I can't really compare, but I started out shooting 35mm film cameras. Image quality is for me more important than portability. So I guess that did answer it.. 🙂

I have a question for you guys. Since I said that I was willing to go as high as $2000-$2500, which is K1-II range, would I be better off buying the K1 anyway? Most of my lenses are full frame lenses anyway, and I haven't invested in ApS-c specific lenses. I also only shoot in manual, because I find it fun, so autofocus is not important to me. Would I theoretically be better off buying full frame, to get more out of the gear that I already own?

Just a theoretic question - thinking out loud here. This thought didn't occur to me earlier.

Some of these drivers looked like rich kids as well - so the car was probably bought by mom and dad. They don't take care of them in the same way when they haven't worked hard to afford them. :D

For many of us, holding one before we buy one is simply impossible, due to where we live and Pentax distribution around the world. So I will have to buy sight unseen.

I think the whole flippyscreen debate is a bit blown up, for several reasons. While it is true that some are probably shunned by the lack of a flippyscreen, I don't think the inclusion of a flippyscreen is magically going to get a lot of people to jump ship to Pentax. In the world at large, Sony, Nikon, Canon and Fuji have a much higher level of brand awareness among the average person, and most important of all: to the average consumer, they have "cool factor". "Oh, nice, you own the latest Sony flagship.. Cool, dude!". Although these sorts of things are incredibly shallow, they do matter to a lot of people. Bragging rights, and so on. So even with a flippyscreen, I just don't see a massive amount of people jumping ships from those four brands. Pentax is treated a bit like the black sheep.

But hey, I don't want to start the flippyscreen debate all over again, so I'll keep quiet about it.
