I have a Feisol 3372 with a gimbal head which is strong and light.

GKJRC Katana Pro Gimbal Head Telephoto Lens Side Mount Clamp ? ProMediaGear
FEISOL Elite Tripod CT-3372 M2 Rapid

that makes 5.6 lbs. It is a solid platform, and I used it for hikes. A bit too heavy, and I didn't want to spend a few hundred dollars to save a pound and a half, so I went the other extreme.

CT-3332 Feisol which is very light, 1.79lbs
FEISOL Travel Tripod CT-3332 Rapid - Tripods
I don't like ball heads, and wanted a simple but strong tilt, so I got a monopod head. All told I'm carrying 1.2kg.
Monopod Tilt Head with Arca-Swiss Clamp ? BIF - Bullseye

Huge difference when on long hikes, but definitely a compromise. I use long lenses on the tripod, but don't extend it fully. It will extend to just below eye level with the center column, which I use similar to a monopod, but if I want a stable platform I don't extend the center column, meaning it is waist high. At that level is is quite stable.

I'm quite happy with the setup. I have shot my Sigma 500 f4.5 on a K1 with good results. If I don't have far to go I take the heavier gear, but for backpacking it works quite well.

I'd buy a 300 f4 if it focussed like the 150-450 or better the 55-300 plm.

Every time I take out my DA*300 f4 I fight with focus on my K1II.

Mine has taken some abuse, being used outdoors in all weather. I haven't dropped it, but in and out of vehicles, in and out of my pack, hanging on a Peak clip with a 300 mm on my backpack for 6 hour hikes. It is a workhorse.

Technology moves the baseline of excellence. Point and click and you have a well exposed shot, and some cropping and post processing can make it composed.

So then what? You will have to see, understand light and seek out the times and subjects. It makes the challenge not technical but vision, story.

My challenge to myself is to look at a scene, flower, critter, and try to capture something that makes me feel the same as when I'm there experiencing it.

It has always been such with photographers. The tools make the technical part simpler. But it is far more challenging to move beyond that.

Not inexpensive, but very light and very stable.

Katana Jr. Pro. GKJRC Katana Pro Gimbal Head Telephoto Lens Side Mount Clamp

A suggestion. Get a LensCoat for it or it will develop feet and walk away. Stunning piece of hardware that attracts eyes.

Anyone have experience with this combination? On my K1-II the focus is ok, noticeably less positive than the 150-450. It hunts.

Very nice!

---------- Post added 03-10-21 at 06:13 AM ----------

That looks like movement blur.

It took me a month or more to get a decent shot out of my 150-450.

If you are getting good results with static shots on a platform of some kind, and not on dynamic shots, it is likely your technique. On the K1 the SR shouldn't get in the way. Technique that works on a 300mm isn't good enough for 450mm.

Practice practice practice. Photoshop has a module that can fix motion blur in an image, and it's analysis will show you how much movement there is. That is where I figured out how much my technique was causing the problem.

How do you find that lens at shorter focal lengths? I've been carrying around my 150-450 in a pack, but I'd like something on a clip that is versatile and light. Things show up and I want a quick shot, or something short and closer in like a flower or butterfly.

I agree 100%. I tried the DA300 as a lighter option for a hike, but the autofocus compared to the 150-450 was disappointing.

I'm in awe of those photographers, capturing what they did with what they had.

But what if there isn't light? Owls are out at night, and maybe at dawn and dusk. The limits of the hardware we have today are as hard as they were then, they simply have moved outwards. I've gotten shots in low light conditions that I wouldn't even have bothered shooting with the K3.

Someone said to me that when you advance in photography you will become acutely aware of how much a stop will cost you.

Don't underestimate the difficulty of what you are trying to accomplish.

The tougher the conditions, the more you want to set your scene. There are backgrounds and distances that simply will not work. You know your area and the scenes you will run into, look at these scenes as framing the birds. The same light, same bird against different scenes will either work or won't; it is a matter of figuring out what works.

And get close. The larger the bird is in the frame, the more detail there will be to work with, especially important when noise will lose some detail.

The settings you are using aren't extreme and the K1-II should be able to give reasonable results. I did a search on my photos at high iso using that lens and the K1-II. These have default edits from Darktable.

I turn off all in camera processing. I use TAV mode usually, with a user mode set to 1/1250 f8, and adjust from there. Center point focus usually, especially if very dark.

A dark bird against a dark background at distance in low light will be extremely difficult. Lighter colors and backgrounds let you go to higher iso's. I shoot from a tripod with a gimbal, which probably gives me a stop or two. Hand held make sure stabilization is on.

It took me months to start getting results with a long lens in good light, so practice and technique matter. When I got the 150-450 I had trouble getting anything decent for a while, even though I was shooting a 500 f4.5 for a few years previous, but I figured out the lens and am very happy with it. Low light with long lenses shooting wildlife is probably the most challenging thing you can do. In my experience movement blur causes me more trouble than noise.

These are iso 26500. K1-II with 150-450. These aren't exceptional shots, I selected a few examples from my collection. There is lots of improvements that could be made; cropping, exposure correction and some contrast. Many of my lower iso shots have more noise and loss of detail that these high iso shots.

And iso 12800

Get the K1-II. The low light capabilities will spoil you and you won't want to use the K3. The AF is quite good as well.

I set the selection dial to crop and switch to cropped mode to get a fast frame rate.

Think 3-4 stops and how that would change your shooting. It is possible to shoot wildlife at dawn and dusk.

This is where back button focus works very well. Instead of initiating focus with a shutter button half-press, you press the af button. You can enable or disable focus independent of the shutter button. If you need to manually focus the shutter button won't fight you.
