Trying out the K3III with the 55-300 PLM. It is a great combo.

The black paint on my K3MarkIII has also started to wear off in a few areas. I'm finding the paint on the K3MarkIII to be a little more prone to wear than that of my old K3 and K1MarkII.

Is there a way to roll back the firmware? My K3MarkIII started having issues with the backscreen the day after I updated the firmware. The first time it occurred, the settings display stopped showing but I was able to keep shooting by checking settings through the viewfinder or LCD screen. At first, even though the settings wouldn't display, I could review images with the backscreen, but that stopped responding as well after a while. The menu would still come up and display, however. Which was good, as that meant I could reset the setting. After the reset, it started working again properly for the rest of the day. The next day, however, the settings display issue returned but never progressed to not showing the image playback. As during the day before, doing a reset got it working properly again. After two resets in two days, I've got my preferred settings well memorized now! It is sort of acting like the eye sensor is reporting that the camera is at my face, even when it isn't obstructed. I tried turning the eye sensor off, but only the settings reset helped. Maybe it is just a coincidence the issue started the day after the firmware update, but I'm hoping to test that by rolling back the firmware.

The timing of the issue was very inconvenient. I was in a small aircraft photographing colonial waterbirds for work and paying the pilot $455/hr for the flight time. I had a K1MarkII as a backup and that I was able to quickly switch systems, but ultimately we were forced to land so that I could troubleshoot the problem with the K3MarkIII on the first day. :(

A few shots from yesterday. I need to work on figuring out the metering for BIF. I was using highlight-weighted, but I'm not sure that this is the best option. Autofocus seemed to work great, but my keeper rate was lowered due to exposure issues. Thankfully, the subjects gave me a lot of opportunities for shots.

AF-C of K-3III is impressive

Maybe not a translation error, but I think maybe still some miscommunication. After further thought, it would appear that dicki is referring to subject tracking using the Auto Area autofocus point selection option that automatically selects the autofocus point for the user from the full 101 available focus points. I have not tried tracking birds using AF-C using in full auto mode. I use the AF Select, Expanded Area AF (S), or Select (S). I have occasionally, but rarely, used the Zone Select AF option. I believe I used Expanded Area AF (S) while photographing the barn swallows. That way, I was able to provide some information to the camera as to which part of the frame I would like it to focus on with tracking the birds with the camera through the OVF. I wouldn't expect any camera in fully automatic mode to always examine a scene and focus and compose an image the way I wanted. This goes for whether I am photographing animals, people, objects, or landscapes.

Setting the AF to Select (S) lets you can tell the camera exactly what focus point to use. Your claim that you cannot control the focus point in AF-C is wrong.

Regardless, I have used the K3 and K1markII for a number of years. After several weeks of fairly high use under demanding conditions, I can confidently say that the K3markIII is a vast improvement for photographing action and moving subjects.

I used my K3 iii during some aerial surveys of bird colonies and loafing sites last week. The small image doesn't do the details in the image justice.
