Thanks, Lititz, for the memory jog on the extended warranty. I just got an XZ-2 from B&H a couple days ago and had the extended warranty on my "to do" list. I know how that would've ended up... forgotten with everything else!

The XZ-2 can be configured to allow control of the zoom from the control ring on the lens. It works well; better in my hands than that little rocker switch at the shutter release button.

Nice! Gives me an idea to do something similar, rather than plain old mundane... what software did you use to put your piece together?

Should I give up on my Samsung GX-10 DSLR?

Another thing to consider is to use your on-board flash with a DIY diffuser (e.g.- a clear 35mm film canister w/a slot cut-out to slip over the flash head) to use as a fill so you can decrease your shutter speed.
You should be able to control the intensity of the flash from your menu. A little experimenting should produce a good result.
If you google "DIY flash diffuser" you'll find other ways to reduce the harshness of a direct flash.

Brand new K-5 - scratchy sounds??

My K-5 and K-01 are vocal on start up. In fact, the K-01 is quite vocal!

On the other hand, my K10D is quite stealthy... not a peep out of it on power up. Unless playing 25 years in a cover band has completely destroyed my hearing! :D

Thanks for your input, everyone. I'm thinking it's more a hardware problem w/my current desktop. I'll get back to you about this later.

Color quality in video playback

When I playback video on the camera, the colors are fine.

However, on the computer (with quicktime or windows) magenta is totally lost, leaving mostly cyan hues of everything.

Do I need to download a codec, or is this some other type of problem?

I'm using a Sandisk 32gb ultra (class 10) as my recording medium.

Thanks!

K5 Silver v. Black - Worth How Much $

I remember when I bought my first Nikon 35mm SLR, an FE. It was silver (as was the majority of cameras back in the day...). About a year later, the FE was also available in black (wow... just like the F3, how professional!), but at a higher price.

Kinda reminds me of Dr. Seuss' Star Bellied Sneetches...

*PETITION* Lets put an end to the crazy online Pentax lens prices in the US!

I came into Pentax from Nikon (film), as I was introduced to the K10 with its incredible build quality and features which made it a great value for the money.

Since that time I have gotten a K-5 and, most recently, a K-01 with the 40mm kit lens (nice camera, by the way...).

I also have an assortment of Pentax lenses, and one third party lens (Vivitar 70-210 f.2.8...not the V3 though). Also Pentax flashes, battery grips for both bodies, an M42 adapter, yadda yadda yadda....

I am discouraged by the lens price increases without any change in warranty coverage and addressing fundamental design and/or manufacturing problems of some lenses that have been posted extensively on this board. I expect to pay a fair/equitable price for a lens comparable to any other major brand, given the same warranty coverage and construction; but not a higher price simply for paying a higher price.

If Pentax continues with its current pricing and warranty policy, I won't be buying (or will wait until promotions come around once in a blue moon). If the pricing comes down some/warranty period comes up I may consider (primes and 18-135 zoom). I won't buy an SDM lens new, even though I was very tempted on Black Friday.

Otherwise, with that being said I did come from Nikon, and still have all my old equipment. Some of my Nikon lenses are digital compatible, and I could easily start to accumulate a couple of digital Nikon bodies instead of investing further in Pentax equipment, while still using the Pentax equipment I have now.

It's a shame though, as Pentax really is a superior (IMHO) build in most respects (I shot with my friends Nikon D7000; no comparison), as well as the prices of some bodies coming down. If Pentax kept the pricing of the lenses in concert they could very well have the happy problem of supplying the demand...

External video microphone suggestions

Thanks for the advice... it never occured to me about having the sound change when panning, but it makes perfect sense. Along your lines, I was also looking at a Zoom H4n as a field recorder. We got one for our son (a music major) several years ago and it's pretty slick...

External video microphone suggestions

Since I plan to use my K-01 mostly for video, I have been doing some research on an external mic. Quite an education! :D It seems as though microphone types mirror (pun intended) lens types for different intended uses (e.g. boom mic more of a "telephoto" compared to a stereo mic, etc.).

In reading some of the posts here, I like the Rode stereo condenser mic. It'll fit my needs to record my wife's bell choir performances, and similar things.

Does anyone know of any other brand stereo mic I should consider around the same price point? (Rode is $250).

After that, I guess at some point I'll be getting a boom mike too. Instead of LBA, it'll be MBA... and not the degree!

K-01+ Loupe Type LCD Cover

I'm considering this one because it mounts to an ARCA-Swiss compatible plate and doesn't involve any adhesives or magnets. It's got a nice quick release and the whole thing can be taken off quickly to convert it back to stock. The neat thing about that is that I could also use it on my K-5 w/o having to buy another LCD mounting plate:

There are a couple of interesting videos on the site. The second one describes the unit in detail.
