here's my tip:

anyone that owns a pentax should get a helios lens. (unless you hate creamy delicious pictures with awesome bokeh)

When I first started with my pentax I had barely shot anything in manual mode and didn't know much. Getting a manual lens and getting out of auto is a great learning experience and the payoff is beautiful

So with the k-50's also suffering from this problem from time to time, I wonder if the K-S2 is a good buy.... or should I get a k-3? no built in flash on k-3 ii is kind of a bummer

Thanks steve, you have confirmed my suspicions. The lenses are fine, aperture moves wonderfully. The camera is the fault. When I was reading the other threads on this I kept nodding my head, especially when people say it barely ever happened in the beginning, but progressively got worse and worse. Its 50% of my pictures now, and it sounds a bit different when you take a dark picture like this.

I've also read of people getting the repair and the problem returned down the road. I think I will just save for a k-3 ...

these were both shot on auto with exposure at +/- 0 EV

this thread https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/151-pentax-k-30-k-50/287348-k-30-taking-dark-shots.html

says aperture motor is a common problem with the k-30 and k-50. And I just realized I bought this in 2013 and didn't get an extended warranty. UGHHH

Maybe this is just a sign I should get a k-3 ii or k-s2

This didnt happen before a few months ago. This happens with our sigma lens and the kit lens.

Almost half the time when shooting indoors, and outdoors as well come to think of it, the pictures come out super dark. The settings are fine. Here are two pictures taken back to back with identical settings on the SAME focal point. I've flipped the mirror down and the sensor looks fine, also did dust removal. I've done a full settings reset. I've tried everything. Its super frustrating because the sigma lens takes awesome indoor pictures in medium light but half of our shots have this happen.

Please help with any recommendations, camera is still under warranty for a little while. I know its not the sigma because kit lens does it as well.

My wife and I got the sigma contemporary 17-70 as a replacement all around to the kit lens.

Got it from amazon warehouse as "like new - unused" for $350 so I figure its a deal anyway.

We love its versatility, but riddle me this... When recording video, it absolutely refuses to auto focus with the AF button on the face of the camera. It seeks a bit, but just ends up blurrier and blurrier. Is this normal? its not that hard to manual focus during video, but kind of a pain while recording a 1 year old running around.

One aspect that we really love about our helios 44k-4 is the image quality that I could only describe as "creamy"
shot indoors on a really cloudy day too!

is this effect unique to these old Russian lenses? I'm sure I could just do it in post processing too...

really just trying to decide between the sigma 17-70 and pentax 18-135 WR. I'm not sure if we ever really need that zoom, though. I'm sure I will have both lenses sooner or later! My son is only 6 months now, but the zoom will come in handy for sports. And we do love the outdoors...

great advice fgaudet

Even if it says WR on it, im still going to be careful. So I guess it doesnt really matter if I am treating the equipment the same. You like that sigma 17-70? thats what I am leaning towards. or the DA 18-135.... The DA 16-50 is a little out of my price range.

Thats a great idea. I was thinking of selling the kit lens to recoup some of the cost, but now that you mention it, we are going to keep it for pool days etc. then we arent tied down to picking a WR upgrade. The sigma 17-50 or 17-70 are looking really good right now.

So me and my wife have a K-30. We love it. The WR kit lens is pretty lackluster however. I got us a mint 1995 helios 44K-4 to get into manual shooting, and we take some pretty amazing photos. The quality of the helios glass vs the kit lens is just not even close.

This has led us to wanting an everyday shooter lens upgrade (auto focus, wide angle through portrait). We would love to be able to take portraits of the baby, as well as wide angle landscapes on vacation.

I've been reading this roundup DA* 16-50mm vs. Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Comparison - Introduction - PentaxForums.com

The sigma seems like a really good buy, but weather sealing is a very big plus for us. Is weather sealing available on any other lenses in this price category besides the Pentax DA*?

Any advice is appreciated. Obviously not trying to pick between the 3 in that article, but thats the kind of thing we are looking for.

so if i see a multicoated auto-aperture 44k-4 made in 1995, its really not going to be the same, is it?
can the aperture be controlled manually?

If im a beginner with a k-30 looking to get a helios 44.... and I'm not really sure about getting an m42 adapter and going that route yet.... will I still get good results with a helios 44k instead of a 44m-2/4? The sharpness and bokeh are what interest me. I dont know if the later model k mount helios lenses lose that old fashioned look. Any info is appreciated!
