Pentax Kr questions (pentax newbie)

Your battery is no good, you should get WWAAYYY more shots than 200. I would stay away from the cheap eBay batteries. I had 2, after a year I had to get rid of them as they swelled to the point where they would get stuck in the camera, plus battery life was quite poor. I have not tried the "Wasabi" brand that others might recommend, but myself, I would buy the OEM Pentax battery. I have learned that buying cheap batteries means paying for cheap batteries and later buying the expensive batteries because the cheap ones died way too soon...

Without seeing a photo, we can't tell if the focus is off. Luckily, if you feel it is off, under the settings in the camera you can adjust the focus for Back or Front focus. It depends what lens you are using, some lenses are fairly soft at certain focal lengths (or distance to object) and that could make it seem like the focus is off.

Geez, it has been a little while since I have used the K-r (too bad, it is an awesome camera!)... but if you hold the middle button of the d-pad it should switch from manual AF point to the screen that lets you choose ISO/white balance. It is documented in the user manual.

Which Lenses to pack for European Holiday

I just returned from 3 weeks in France and a couple days in Iceland.

My kit was:

15, 31, 18-135

I couldnt have asked for a better kit, other than if the 31 was the size of the 43!

The 18-135 stayed at the hotel most days, but on the days with rain, it got its fair share of use.

The entire trip I kept telling the wife "I have no idea how anyone would willing pack a 5DII with 24-70 and 70-200 on vacation". Stay light, stay mobile, and you'll enjoy any trip ;)

K3 mark II ?

Yes, you are correct. I can't argue that, but if the K-3 had a flippy screen, in one way Ricoh would expect someone to take selfies. I guess it is like saying a sledge hammer can tap nails, but is clearly designed not to (but some users will).

Agree on Norms DOF opinion.

But, I like the shot. Great capture as I know you would have had 0 spare seconds to get it off. Many times I have shot squirrels with a 300mm lens at 5 feet (image an inch of DOF). Turns out good... but I just wish for more DOF or rather more time to change the cameras settings.

Which is the best portrait lenses ? DA 50-135, FA 77 or any other suggestions.

IMO, the FA 43 is the portrait lens of choice (for me). I prefer to get closer to the subject. Keep in mind, I do not make money from my lenses and I rarely shoot portraiture.

That;s a nice image. Thanks for sharing. The window does mirror the door in a delightful way.

A K-30 is a wonderful camera, it really isn't that old. Many people use older cameras (I have a K100d).

You should be able to hold the 15mm for a sharp image. Really, anything great than a shutter speed of 1/15 should be sharp (for that lens).

K3 mark II ?

My Canon S1 had a 1.5" (I think) rotating screen and took many, MANY selfies. TBH, if my K-3 had an articulating screen, it would be taking many, MANY selfies on my vacations.

Yes, selfies are a generational thing, and well... lame. But, it is far better than packing a gorilla pod (and hoping no one steals your camera) and packing a tripod for weeks just to pound of 12 photos of oneself in front of various monuments.

Selfie = lame self photo

"Do you two want your photo with the Eiffel Tower?" - Thanks mate, I just stole your camera.

I'd rather be lame.

Wow, this slid real negative, real quick.

I do not want to take sides or argue, but I just want to say that my interpretation of OP's post has been misinterpreted but rather is:

He does not expect anything for free and is pretty miffed at 5 months of wasted time (which is important at anyones life, but especially in them golden years). Poor communication? I'd be miffed too.

I would be mad about having my product gone for 5 months and a lack of communication regardless of price. No matter if I broke the lens or it was a warranty issue, I would expect it in that magic 4-6 week range, but really 3 weeks. I would expect competent communication when needed (such as needing to sent to Japan or the price quote before work). That really is not too much to ask.

As for what I think Pentax/Ricoh should do for OP, cover the cost of repair and a sincere apology admitting full responsibility and failure of the system. I know I would accept this and it would turn my attitude around. It is not about the money, I am sure, it is about admitting fault and being sincere about mistakes being made.

Thumbs up for that. Thanks for the write up!

Not fully sure on what you mean about "invert" the third bag. I am assume you double up the paper bags, set the "Domke" in. Then tag the third bag and flip it upside down, insert bag in that way. If you follow me, you have now fully enclosed the "Domke" in a paper bag case? SO... bag sits vertically, with 2 bags on the bottom portion, one on the top?

Completely agree with this. If they cant fix it, I wont buy it. The loss of the repair depot is a huge deal to me. I love my Pentax gear, but in a few years when I look for a new body... We'll see.

To OP, sorry to hear the story. Crappy customer service is the worst.

I wouldn't be picky about my children having a particular accent. For the most part, Alberta's accents are minimal.

However, I will not complain about French girls and their accents. Yep.

I probably shouldn't care, but does this rub off at all? I prefer to own few camera bags (even though I have several) and would use the bag year round, everyday. Wouldn't want to have waxy jeans on my left hip.

I for one would be interested in and grateful if you could share your "recipe" for waxing the Domke (or any bag). That would be one of those sticky threads in a How-to section that everyone should read. I think you're right about the correct time in the oven, let it all absorb in and it should give off much on clothing.

PS, thanks for the tip off on Vegabond bags. My only gripe with the F5C is it cannot hold my K3 and DA*300... However it looks like the Vegabond 10" or 13" might just fit the bill. I figure I could get the K3, DA*300, and 18-135 in there and be set for WR with your waxing secrets.

Excellent write up, thanks for sharing your experience. It is always good to see what people can come up with and share success stories.

I will always day, you can have my Domke from my cold, dead hands. I have the A and C. The A is PERFECT for a 2 Ltd + body. The K3 + 31 is maximum size though, plus the 43 or 77. I used the A with my K-r, 18-135 and 55-300 for three years before getting the C. The C is going to France with me. Going to carry: K3, Kr, 15, 31, 18-135, 6 filters and other accessories. The fit and finish are great. The WR is excellent for what I have tested, and both mine are the non waxed variety. Both are olive and you cant beat how well they age.

Too be honest, I have been complemented several times (sincerely) about my nice purse (Domke). No one, NO ONE, I have came across knew it was a camera bag. Great, I don't want it to scream $2500, but my masculinity took a few kicks to the gonads over it all. It's the size, shape, and olive colour that seems to throw most people off. I contend that only photographers would know the Domke brand name as they tend to be only sold in photo shops (here), not Walmarts and Targets.

That all aside, how do you like the wax finish? I worry about it rubbing off onto my clothing and skin. I have toyed with the idea of using a silicone spray designed for boots/tents.
