Kx memory card problems

I have Interesting news. The Wintec filemate PRO 8GB card that previously had read/write errors and black frames now appears to be functioning fine in my Kx camera with the 1.03 FW. I was rethinking some of my previous posts and now wonder if the issues are related to battery voltage level and variances in SD cards voltage needs. I also wonder if 8GB cards have higher power requirements than 4GB cards since they have more memory locations to write to. Maybe someone who knows how SD cards function can answer that one. Not sure what the performance range of SD cards are and how that may vary from vendor to vendor for a given read/write speed class. Maybe the new firmware adds a write delay until the card is really ready for the data for greater stability? No idea.

I shot 200 plus pics even machine gunning some of the shots until the red low battery icon appeared. No issues. Previously I could not get to ten shots without errors.

Hope this info is useful.

OK, great. I'll try to do some testing today on my 8 GB Wintec that was giving me issues an let you know if there was any improvement over the previous firmware.

Not a silly question at all. I do have the latest 1.03 FW but have not tested the Wintec card as yet. Do you have access to any 4GB cards? I'm curious if there is any relationship to vendor model and size of cards and read/write issues.

If you want, drop me a PM with a shipping address and I'll send you a 4GB Kingston card for testing. I got a bunch of them.

Actually now that I think of it there are parralels in the rimfire firearms world. Even though all the ammo is supposed to be designed to the same general specs many rimfire guns will not shoot all rimfire ammo brands the same. One brand will cause jams like crazy in shooting and the next brand feeds perfectly. Small variations in manufacturing tolerances can cause big issues in real use.

Hi Dave

This is not an unusual problem. My K200D had corruption issues with 4 GB Kingston cards however had no issues with Crucial 4GB cards. My Kx has memory full and black frame errors with 8GB Wintec filemate Pro cards but works fine with Crucial and Kingston 4GB cards.

I do not believe it is related to battery power or dirty contacts. I get the same issues with a fresh pair of batteries. The issue is related to SD card controller and data transfer issues that have issues with certain cameras. It seems that the larger size cards are more prone to these issues. You are having the same issues with your 8GB card that I am.

Try other brands of cards, especially 4GB brand name cards and see which ones work and then stick to them for that model of camera.

I have a Kx and in Manual mode you tap the +/- button to switch between the shutter speed and F stop items. Then use the dial to adjust values. You do not need to hold it down.

I only use a circular polarizer or GND filter. I figure why put some cheap glass in front of my expensive glass. For protection I use the lens hoods.

My guess would be that when shooting from the hip your AF is not locking in on what you think it is. Especially if you have a shallow depth of field from a lower f stop. When you bring it up to your eye you point it exactly where you want it to be sharp and lock in.

K-x hands down. I have owned the K100, K200, K20 and finally the K-x. I have played with some of the Canon, Sony and Nikon cameras and still prefer the solid feel, small size and weight of the K-x.

Question about focus speed and focusing on Pentax vs others

Lenses do make a big difference. My Sigma 50, 105 and Pentax DA 40 lenses seem to lock in fast while my DA55-300mm feels much slower (primes vs zoom). I was in a store one day playing with a D50 and could not believe how fast the AF was. I still would not give up my K-X though. Quite a few other features that make it the right camera for me.

I had the same issue with a Sigma 105 macro lens. Sigma uses a terminal block for the contact pins below the mounting base and mine was shifted a hair over so the pins were not dead center in the openings. Plus the terminal block was a bit loose inside which probably lead to the shifting. I had it shifted to direct center and of course made sure the contacts were clean. Problem solved.

I can recommend the DA 55-300mm. I have one and find it to be a good quality lens for the money.

If you do not need the reach the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 or Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 are supposed to be pretty good.

Minor correction. You can update the FW with a folder on the card but you MUST have the BIN file in the root directory of the card and not in any folder. It does not hurt to format the card before the update just to be safe.

On a sunny day a Circular Polarizer would cut down on the glare. A Graduated Neutral Density (GND) filter may help also depending on the difference between sky and snow light intensity if you are doing any landscape pics..

I assume from your post you are interested in something sharper and possibly faster (constant f2.8). Like others have indicated there are many great choices. Here is a list to consider.

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8
Sigma 18-50mm f2.8
Tamron 28-75 f2.8
Sigma 17-70mm f2.8

Other good choices:
Pentax F35-70mm f3.5-5.6 ( I have this one and like it very much)
Pentax FA28-105mm f4-5.6 (I also have this one and think it is very underrated for the price.)
Pentax DA 16-45mm f4

It depends on the coverage you need and how fast a lens you want.

I generally stay away from SDM lenses but the 17-70 from Pentax appears more trouble free than the 16-50.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

My first thought was to suggest epoxy the plastic piece back on but I see the ribbon cable is damaged also. If you could reconnect the ribbon cable then you may be able to epoxy it back but that looks tricky due to the tight spaces.

I would assume the repair would be expensive due to the housing needing to be replaced and the hotshoe electrical needing replacement but you would have to get an estimate to get an exact cost.

If it was me I would probably look for a used one in good condition in the marketplace. That's how I got mine :)

Good luck.
