It would. But you simply cannot make a sensor that behaves like film from an optical point of view and with existing CCD/CMOS/BSI CMOS technology.
Just to name them, the maximum chief ray angle and the thickness of the absorbing layer are simply not the same... This can be seen in wide angle lenses mainly and usually brings 'more vignetting than on film' and 'worse corner resolution than on film'...

I do. Specially in the high ISO range ;) I honestly still don't believe that any ISO above 51800 is going to be usable in real life, no matter what amount of processing and sensor fine tuning they made. I can't wait to see the images for all the ISO values.

I am still waiting for the detailed specs but here are a few comments regarding the design and ergonomics :
-The retro style is only half retro (this pop up flash does not look so vintage...) which makes it somehow weird in my eyes. But that's just a matter of taste I assume.
-Let's notice that the pop up flash is there, that's a good news.
-Ergonomics : the main deal breaker for me is the lack of top LCD screen (or equivalent). When I shoot it is vital for me to know just at a glance the following : "ISO/Shutter/Aperture"+"Battery condition"+"Memory". And the LCD screen on top is vital for this. I would have preferred a bigger one on the K-1, but I have one with key info and thus it works for me. Alternatively the dials with a mark corresponding to the shutter speed like on the film cameras (K1000 for instance) are fine. But I need to know what's going on. I covered a classical music festival during the week end and turning on the main screen was not an option.
-Ergonomics: more dials is not the simplest way. I find the 2 dials efficient for what I do. Pressing the ISO button and turning a dial at the same time is easy enough.
-Battery life : reducing the size of the battery is a concern since more and more things need power (GPS, Wifi, image processing...). And since there is no small LCD on top, having to switch on the main screen will eat up some energy.
-Connection : no jack seems a step back for video, but I was not expecting anything like a video monster anyway

As a K-1/K-3 owner, I would like to actually see a K-3 replacement that would be the exact same size and layout as the K-1. I often use the K-3 as a back-up for the K-1 or as a second camera and ideally would like to have the same layout and everything on both to be more efficient. Overall what I expect from a K-3 replacement regarding ergonomics is : build quality, K-1 organized layout, very durable battery life and dual SD slots, a screen on top.

Question about K1 autofocus

Hi Jmbern1 and welcome on Pentaxforum !

In my opinion the K-1 should be totally up to focus fast enough for single shot and decently focus in low light. The focusing capabilities depend on the lens(es) you plan to use, but if the lens is not slowing down the focusing, it should be good for what you want to do. Regarding low light, I would say that the K-1 focuses well up to 3200ISO, but I find the focus to be less reliable above and I sometime switch back to manual (concerts or weddings can be dark). That being said, I had also such issues with a Nikon D800E...

Overall the K-1 is pretty good at single shot but not a leader among the 'pro' cameras regarding this feature. For your use I honestly don't think you are going to complain about it, but you should try to get your hands on one and test it :)

Maybe consider third parties too : samyang has a great cheap 85mm (a bit short for your range, they also have a 135mm but probably out of budget), or maybe you can consider the sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro lens (I payed mine 220 euros second hand). I find this lens to be a very good performer for both portraits and landscapes on both APSC and FF.

How can I predict RAW file sizes?

Thanks BrianR for your feedback on this. I must admit that I don't check the number of images left very often when shooting thanks to the dual camera slots.
I agree, you should get some raw files from the reviews (dpreview and pentaxforum mainly) and see how they work for you. Adding a bit of RAM may also help your computer. I think that the 24MPx are OK for any modern i5 or i7 computer.

How can I predict RAW file sizes?

I would say that for the 14 bits files, the MP+6 rule tend to be the average. It would be interesting to know how the Pentax cameras are computing the number of images available. When you select your format, they say how many you can store, but I don't know what their methodology is.
Theoretically speaking, the DNG file contains the image + the info about the image (1 small document made by the camera manufacturer and 1 standardized document with the basic resolution, time, lens used, modes of the camera, distance to the subject, flash.... ).
From a theoretical point of view the maximum file size for a DNG in 14 bits is supposed to be "MP*14bits/8 + size of info'MB. For the K-1 files, this would give some huge 63+MB files (50% more than the actual size I have). But the DNG format uses lossless compression to reduce the size of the file. Which means that if you have some large areas of the same values you are going to save up some space.

So the conclusion is that I don't have a theoretical answer to the average size (maybe there are some people knowing more about the DNG format and the lossless compression they use around), but there is one for the upper limit :)

My rule of thumb for DNG size is 'Number of MPx + 6' Mo. The K-3 files are around 30Mo, the K-1 files are about 42Mo. If I remember well my K-5 files were a bit above 20Mo... Hope this helps !

The first thing you need to tell us is what kind of photography you are getting paid for. If your business is sports, at the moment, I would say that you might need to switch brand. Otherwise I don't see any problem with Pentax.
I shoot press (rarely nowadays) and weddings and am getting money for it, although it is more of a side job than my main source of revenue. For both I use pretty much the same equipment : cameras (K-1 + K-3) zoom lenses (28-70mm f/2.8 tamron + 70-200mm f/2.8 sigma) and some manual prime lenses depending on the mood (16mm f/2 APSC Samyang, 35mm f/1.4 samyang, 50mm f/1.2 pentax, 85mm f/1.4 samyang). And these 6 lenses do most of what I need to do.
Again, I don't know what you shoot, but if you have no budget limit, Pentax has everything you need as for lenses : 15-30mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 150-450mm, 560mm. You cover all the focal range with this, and everything is modern and weather sealed. There are some primes available (limited, macro lenses, etc) and they are going to release some new primes. And some third party options are available too : sigma (18-35mm for APSC for instance), tamron, samyang, irix...

I also react to your comment because you mention DxOMark. 1) I remind that DxOMark is buying what they use for their test or get some lenses from the manufacturers. The problem is that they are not buying so many K mount lenses as the readers of the website are mainly Canon and Nikon users. So there are very few pentax lenses displayed on the website 2) the DxOMark score depends on the sensor used, so comparing the score of a same lens on a D810 versus a K-50 does not make sense. Be sure that you compare similar sensors.

Hi Yozza and welcome to the K mount :)
If your favorite lens on FF is 50mm and you want super sharp pictures, you should consider the 35mm macro limited from pentax. It's a very contrasty and sharp prime.
Regarding zoom, I find the tamron 28-70mm f/2.8 and sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 to be good performers for a reasonable price, but you also have the 16-50 and 50-135mm from pentax (more expensive) which are both stunning zoom..
Hope it helps !

Hi Zav ! That's an interesting lens. I have at the moment the sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom but am not totally pleased with the image quality I get from it. It is decent at f/8, but it is quite bad wide open... I am thus thinking of getting a 300mm f/4 prime or 400mm f/5.6 prime....
There aren't many review of this sigma 300mm f/4 APO on the forum so I would be interested in your own feedback when comparing this lens with the Pentax 300mm f/4.5 that you have for instance. If you have a few RAW files for f/4 and f/5.6 I would be interested too.
About the autofocus, did you try to repair it by yourself or not at all ?
Last question : do you have any idea of the shipping price for Europe ?

All the best !

More than one camera body?

Hi gerax :)
Depends on the kind of photography you are doing I would say. If you are into landscape portrait or macro (basically any kind of photography where you can take 10min to have the perfect shot), it does not really make sense to keep an extra camera body. If you are into events or sports it can be very handy. For press/weddings I always shoot with two cameras in order to get different fields of view without changing lens every second. For instance you can have a wide angle on one and a telephoto on the other. And as mentioned by others in case you have a failure of battery/memory card/hardware with one camera, you can keep shooting until you have some time to fix this.
Regarding the lenses, you can have mainly FF lenses and they still work on the APSC. Just use the wide angles on FF and the telephoto on APSC... :)
Hope this helps !

Are there any Auto focus f1.2 lens for Pentax K mount?

Well the statement of Frédéric Guichard is valid for the case of high chief ray angle lenses. This is verified mainly for the following cases :
> Wide angle lenses
> Small size sensors with non-telecentric lenses (typical of smartphone industry).
Basically the thing is that the maximum admissible chief ray angle for a pixel is around 30°... A limitation inherent to the pixel technology, and not only to the brand ^^

As for the 50mm f/1.2 I find it usable on FF if you have some time to focus it (liveview can help) but would probably not be using it under f/1.8 iif I need to get the shot. ;)
