A Brief Introduction. (Short shot on a Pentax K-x)

Great job man. I feel the same way about wishing for a firmware update to give full control over video. That really sucks cause the k-x has such potential which is clearly shown in your film. From this example, you were really able to work around the k-x's quirks and make a great short.

I've posted a film I just shot on the k-x here in the forums. It was my first attempt at making something with the k-x and i've used it a couple of times since on a few smaller projects. I plan to use it more in the future but it will suck if pentax doesn't come up with a firmware update. I'd love to get your feedback on my use of the k-x in my short.

Thanks Dragonfly! I've already got it submitted to a few festivals. It premiered at two fests last week. The fest circuit is the only real outlet for short films so I try to get my films into as many as I can afford to submit to.

Hi Akanarya,

I don't really have any suggestions for the auto focus. I work in film as a focus puller so when it comes to filmmaking, i don't use auto focus and do it all manually anyway. I prefer having manual control over focus.

I bought the k-x mainly for photography but was excited about the video capabilities as an added bonus. I've worked with the Canon 7d recently and it made me really want to use my k-x to shoot my next film. So I did and i've posted the film below. Please let me know what you think and how you think the k-x performed. I'm pumped about the k-x's possibilities and plan to use it on a lot of upcoming projects.

All but about 2 shots where shot with a 35mm 2.8 prime and a 135mm 2.8 prime. I avoided using the stock zoom lenses cause i feared grain issues. I did however use one of the stock lenses to get 2 17mm shots that were in abundant sunlight where grain wouldn't be an issue. While i think the k-x allowed me to get some beautiful images, it wasn't without its troubles. The k-x has several quirks that make it less than ideal for filmmaking however you can work around them to make it work. Not being able to really control the ISO is a big problem. I did the whole p-mode switch trick and it seemed to work but i'm not convinced it really gives you control over the ISO. Also the white balance isn't great. Even if i set the white balance to tungsten, daylight, or whatever setting I wanted, it would still sometimes alter the white balance mid shot depending on the lighting or the actor's moving within the shot. That was very frustrating especially since it should stay at a constant white balance when i'm not using auto. Those were my two main problems with the k-x and in my opinion, pentax should address these issues and create firmware updates to fix it. If you could fix those two issues, the k-x would be a beast! I love the k-x and will continue to work around these quirks but i hope pentax will fix those problems so you can get the most out of the k-x. I've already shot one other short film on the k-x, as well as, a regional commercial and have been pleased with it except for those two issues I just explained.

If you would, please check out my short film below. Its unlisted on youtube so you have to have this link to watch it. Looking forward to hearing your feedback!

Hi everyone,
I've recently finished the film that i was talking about at the beginning of this post. I put it on youtube unlisted so you have to have that link above to watch it. Please give me your thoughts on it, especially on the cinematography. The entire film was shot on the pentax k-x with a 35mm prime 2.8, 135 prime 2.8 and a few shots i used the stock zoom on 17mm but only in bright sunlight.

I'm very excited about what the pentax k-x can do but it does have a lot of quirks that suck. I had problems with controlling the ISO ( i did the p-mode switch trick, but i'm not confident it really gives you control over the ISO so there needs to be a firmware update or something to let you have real control over it). I also had problems with the white balance. Even if i set the white balance to tungsten or day light or whatever, the white balance would still change during a shot depending on the lighting situations or the movements of the actors. Very frustrating. So apart from those two major things that pentax needs to create a fix for, the k-x was a wonderful camera to shoot a short film on. Since this film i've shot one regional commercial on it and one other short film. I'll post those as well when i get a chance.
Also, I'm about to invest in a 50mm 1.4 lens so that will def help with shooting in low light since i did have some grain issues in this film because of needing a faster lens than a 2.8.

Looking forward to seeing what y'all have to say

very nice. I like the look of it. Did you use all natural light or did you do any lighting, especially in the interior shots. What lenses did you use?

I've had trouble with grain when shooting in low light. My fastest lenses are only a 2.8. Did you have problem with grain indoors or in low light? i couldn't tell from the small screen of the vimeo video.

Urgent! Rendering k-x footage after editing in Sony vegas 9

UPDATE: after using that forum topic I posted in the previous post, i had problems with the render changing my true 24 frames per second into 23.97. It caused a ghosty, motion blur type thing when people moved. Took me a few hours but i figured out how to still render with the settings dvd architect needs to not recompress during dvd burning and have perfectly clear footage. I had to go to each clip and "disable resampling". The footage looks amazing. When playing the dvd on a big widescreen, lcd tv thru the upconvert of a blurray player, the k-x footage looks unbelievably good. I wish I could show you all so you knew what the k-x can do. it has its quirks when it comes to video, but if you work around them, its an amazing little camera

Urgent! Rendering k-x footage after editing in Sony vegas 9

Hi,

I'm new to working with 720 hd video. I've always rendered my standard def videos with no compression as an avi file and then let DVD architect compress that for dvd and my videos have always been as crisp and good of quality as i could get from the footage.

however, if i render my footage from my k-x as an avi without compression it makes the file nearly 30gb!

So what file types, compression, etc should i use for outputting project to get the best quality possible on DVD? I did the mpeg 2 render and made sure everything was set to best quality and was being rendered with the same settings the project has, however, on dvd, it does have some pixelation that is noticeable, especially in movement.

Could someone please give me some advice so i dont' have to render this thing over and over troubleshooting to find the best file type/settings??

I have to have this film i'm doing on dvd and sent off to festivals tomorrow, so quick replies would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah the more stopped down you are the greater depth of field you should get. However, that is one thing I still think is quirky with the k-x. Being able to control your exposure, iso, shutter isn't very easy or definite with the k-x

With the k-x you have to manually focus in video. So when shooting video, turn to manual focus and focus using the ring. no AF in video

Yeah Ira, Send me all the questions you want. I came here for help with k-x video and want to help others too.

When shooting video, i'm unaware of anyway to shoot it without live view unless you have an external monitor and if you don't have an external monitor you'd still need to use live view if you needed to follow focus at all. and for that, an external monitor would be amazingly helpful. But for overheating, it did give me the symbol alot but never actually overheated and stopped me from shooting.

The overheating symbol did come on a lot. However that is just a warning and not meaning its actually overheating. I would continue what I was doing and between takes or set ups i'd shut the camera off mainly to save battery but also to let it cool down. It never actually overheated even when we were shooting out in the heat (did have an umbrella over the camera to keep it out of direct sunlight).

I used 4 gig sandisk ultra SD HC cards. They held about 12 minutes of video which was more than enough. It was like shooting with reels of film. I had three so once two would fill up i'd go dump them on a hard drive while finishign up the last card then start them over.

I use sony vegas 9. I used to use sony vegas 7 when i first did tests with my k-x video stuff but I had to have a strange codec thing to make vegas recognize it. version 9 however, takes the video without any trouble and looks great on it.

I took a big risk and shot a short film on the k-x this past weekend. I wasn't completely comfortable with the camera and it's capabilities, but I went ahead and shot a film on it anyway. I have to say, I'm impressed by it. I shot 95% of the film on two old lenses. A 35mm 2.8 and a 135 2.8. I only used the kit lens on specific shots where those other two lenses wouldn't work and only in abundant light. I'm in the process of editing it right now and will share the finished product with all of y'all when its finished. However, I posted a couple of screenshots below. This is raw footage screengrabs.

not all of the footage turned out this great. I tried using a double adapter thing to make my 35mm lens a 70mm. Bad idea. So after trying to use it on one scene i stopped because there was noticeable grain and the image was extremely flat. I also had grain problems with my prime lens in my lower light scenes. If i had a faster lenses than 2.8 it would've done phenomenally well under the darker lighting conditions. But overall, the film looks very nice.

The k-x has alot of quirks and isn't ideal for shooting films on them, but it can be used to get great images. When I post the final film, I'll go into more detail with the pros and cons i had with shooting a film on this, and hopefully be able to discuss them with the readers here to be able to further understand the camera and how to use it to the best of its abilities.

making the most out of K-x footage

I have seen some great videos that have used the K-x footage. I use sony vegas 9 to edit and dvd architect to make dvds.

What do i need to do from the beginning of the edit, to outputting the file, to putting it on dvd to get the most out of my k-x footage.

I've been playing around but it seems so hard to get it to look as good as i know it can. For instance, outputting as an uncompressed avi then making a dvd from that looks good but there seems to be a slight flicker effect on the highlights or on things that are in sharp focus. Not really sure what is causing it. It is extremely noticable if i output it as a main concept mpeg2 and then put it on DVD.

If someone has a step by step process that they use to get the most out of their video, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm filming a short film this weekend and will be beginning the edit Sunday, so i want to make sure I do this right.

Thanks for any and all help!

Making dvds with 24fps K-x footage but only 23.97fps option in DVD Architect

So the k-x makes videos that are 24 frames per second. I edit using sony vegas 9. So when i edit and render the file i make sure its all 24fps not 23.97. However, when i go to make the dvd using dvd architect, i only have the 23.97 option and not a 24fps. I've made the dvd with 24fps and can't seem to tell the difference.

My question is. Will using the 23.97 when authoring the dvd cause noticeable problems that i may not be catching? Is there a way around it?

thanks

Creating a Photobooth with Pentax K-x

Thanks for the responses.

So in regards to the wifi SD cards. How would I use those for the photobooth application? I assume the wifi cards upload the pics to your computer, and you'd have to be in a location with wireless internet? Would the programs that automatically create the photobooth images be able to use those uploaded images to create image with the caption and print/save?

Thanks for you help

Hi from mississippi as well. What part are you from? I'm from West Point.

I'd love to see your k-x work, and here your experience with using it for film production. I'm about to shoot a short film on mine this coming weekend. I've been using the k-x for photogrpahy for a while but haven't had much chance to use the video function. So i'm a bit nervous about how the k-x will work out.

Creating a Photobooth with Pentax K-x

Hi Everyone,

I own a photography business and am looking into building a photo booth that I could rent out at weddings, parties, etc. I own a Pentax k-x and am trying to find a way to be able to use it for the photo booth. I've been searching all day for software (for taking real photobooth, high quality pictures not webcam ones) that would work with the k-x and be able to take pics, create the photo booth images and be saved on my computer or be printed.

Do ya'll know of any such software or know how to be able to use the K-x to do it? I'm stopping my internet browsing due to complete frustration with not being able to find anything.

thanks.
