Well, the 5DII (24mp) has better colour depth, better dynamic range and less noise than the 5D (12mp). How does this fit into your world-view?

I find this apathy towards pixels perplexing. It's as though you all got trolled by Ken Rockwell or something.

As far as I'm concerned, the more pixels the better.

It hasn't locked up on me, but if I turn the dials quickly it doesn't seem to register. I find this quite annoying and not at all conductive to fast operation.

One of those things nobody mentioned before I bought it.

Pentax Moving Forward... Into Space

I've received a credible tip that Pentax is going to launch a network of satellites with cameras. Pentax will then sell little devices that you point at landscapes (lets face Pentax cameras are only good for landscapes) and the satellite network will queue your request for the next time one is in position and have it emailed to you.

Introducing a subscription model popularised by software companies such as Microsoft and Valve, a basic 24mp photo will cost $1,99, while a larger 100mp photo will cost $5. Professional post-processing to achieve the "supersaturated landscape artist look" will also be available starting at $20 per photo.

Oh, and 645D? That was just a joke.

Yeah, great idea.

I will eat my shorts if Pentax ever makes a functional 645D, much less ships it.

Pentax & marketing sense? :hmm:
Either that, or more superzooms. Between those, I think more superzooms is the likely result.

Pentax Bridge Camera

Someone on the other forum spotted an editor error in the article:

Colorfoto, das Magazin für digitale Fotografie - colorfoto.de Olympus

A Pentax bridge camera with smaller sensor (?), EVF, fixed lens (macro button) and apparently no hotshoe.

I'm not excited. Bridge cameras like this are even dorkier than DSLRs.

It's not HSM, unfortunately. Sigma took it out for the Pentax mount. It costs the same as the HSM version for other mounts though, ha ha!

Regardless, it's an awesome lens. It doesn't leave my K20D.

Phase one P65+ is $40k and it's not quite 645. Hasselblad is making a 645 as well, but given that their 50mp 36x48mm back costs $40k, it's likely to cost a lot more. Why would Pentax be any cheaper?

Pentax won't make a 645D, and even if they somehow managed to, the back alone would cost $50k, so it's not like anyone here will be buying one.

Why is there a mechanical shutter in DLSRs?

Is there somewhere I can read more about this?
The 5DII records up to 24 minutes. I assume that's a arbitrary limitation since if it doesn't overheat in 24 minutes, it probably wouldn't in ten hours either. Besides, with photos, the sensor would be protected by the mirror when not in use, the only difference being that the mirror isn't precisely timed.

Don't DSLRs with video capture already have this? What about the K20D with 21fps burst mode? Or, uhm, any DSLR with live-view?

I always thought it had to do with the sensor heating up or something, but with the release of the 5DII and D90 that shoot video by keeping the shutter open and sampling, I've come up with the question why do DLSRs still have mechanical shutters?

Why not just flip up the mirror and sample the sensor electronically on exposure? It'd allow lighter, smaller, quieter, more reliable cameras and faster "shutter speeds" (1/250000 anyone?).

DSLR advice from one of those "other" photo forums (also, Pentax and low-light)

The k20d is quite noisy. On the other hand it retains good detail and the SR works with fast primes as well. And yet the AF system in low-light is lame at best, even with the super-annoying flash strobing.
50mm on APS-C, or 35mm? Pentax doesn't have any f1.4 normal prime, the closest you can get is the 31mm f1.8, which, at $800, I wouldn't call affordable.
Bright for APS-C, but still difficult to use in daylight and impossible in low-light.
Solid as far as plastic DSLRs go, yeah. Not quite as solid as Olympus cameras (P&S or DSLR) or ancient SLRs.Mostly ok, except for the focus mode switch. Dedicated controls for ISO, shutter speed and aperture would be nice as well.

for various values of 'works well' :) It's certainly difficult to focus with the small VF, and getting m42 lenses on and off is so involved their real-world use is... questionable.

HDR(s) whats your opinion? Too many/ too little?

Seems to me like you could get that without HDR by just increasing contrast and brightness. The advantage of this approach would be you don't automatically kill every deep shadow and make you photo look like something that came out of Maya.

Although according to gurus on dpreview, this has nothing to do with exposing to the right and everything to do with ADC noise.

I use the exifier to re-add the EXIF info after it gets lost somewhere in my raw conversion process. It's a pain, but I only need this for PPG anyway.

Funny, I found it to be the other way around.

And as for HDR looking natural, the human mind is more sensitive to human faces than landscapes. Do a HDR with people in the image and take notes.
