Why don't you submit this question the next time @Adam asks for interview questions of Ricoh???

Can't say I've ever used it. Even using the 9 AF points, it usually misses what I'm trying to focus on. I prefer single point AF, personally.

Not having a manual transmission is a 110% deal breaker for me. No manual, no sale. :D

This is why I will never own lots of luxury cars, SUVs, & even a lot of sports cars like the Nissan GTR. No clutch pedal & no shifter = less engaging for me. I've been wanting to get a Chevrolet SS sedan with a 6-speed manual, Cadillac ATS-V, or a CTS-V, but man! They are very hard to come by. It's really hard to find one with a 6-speed manual.

I also use Linux. Hahahaaha! :p

Sure no one needs Eye AF, but no one needs AF either. They are just tools. Any Pro should be constantly looking at what new tools are available that can help them do their job more efficiently.

Telling people to switch to Sony doesn't seem like a good business strategy nor is it helpful in bringing in a new generation of users.

If Pentax is just for field cameras why are they making a DFA 85 1.4? A portrait lens. Eye AF is increasingly important for portrait shooters.

A Live View CDAF Eye AF implementation is very do-able for Pentax. The current architecture probably doesn't have enough CPU horsepower, but hopefully they are working on a new platform that would be able to support it.

Frankly just a better face detection implementation would be useful for a lot of people right now.

I was having a quick look, The Sony with a 12-24, is vastly more compact than the K-1 and 15-30, and probably almost twice the price. But half the weight and bulk.

Highly unlikely. There is nothing in the optical path available to the PDAF sensor capable of finding eyes. The RGB detector used for metering can theoretically detect and track faces, but cannot reliably resolve an eye.

Who knows what Ricoh is working on next, but my guess is they're focusing on things that (a) others don't have and (b) enhance image quality in some way.

If you need it go for it in the Sony, Pentax is marketed as a field camera. Eye AF on afield camera doesn't make any sense.

We've had people switch to other systems in the past, and come back a few years later with their tails between their legs. But not people who switched for Eye AF. Those people are happy as pigs in mud with their Sony gear.

Thanks :o It's just one of those things... I certainly don't let it get me down :p

I'm fortunate in that the RA rarely prevents me from using any of my equipment - even the heavier full frame and fast lens setup - at least for now. It's just how long I can use it for in one shoot that's limited, so these days I put more thought into what I'll be carrying, and I typically choose my APS-C gear for longer sessions. It's one heck of an incentive to be more efficient in equipment choices  I do physio exercises at home every day, and I think that helps a little.

I sincerely hope you don't suffer from it, given your family history - but if you do, I'm sure you'll find a way. I'm particularly fond of that saying (of American origin, I believe), "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!" :D

Oh yes, they are getting close....some hand me down A7r3 features and AF of A9

Close enough is good enough,$1999

AF adapters make most lens mounts compatible

24mp ...i suppose theres lots of Apsc shooters used to that resolution...oh the sensor has a BS touch...sorry BSI(its international too)

BEST BATTERY life of any mirrorless(without a grip)

Standard video(its only 4K full sensor readout)

9 sigma lenses coming in Native mount

Just dont take it out in the bad weather or anywhere dusty.:)

Amateur Photographers (UK) Predicts End for Pentax

I think it's outrageous for a magazine that is quite influential in this country to run a piece that is effectively trying to scare readers away from buying Pentax because of mere FUD. Could it be anything to do with the fact that Pentax doesn't buy advertising space in Amateur Pornographer (as I've always called that rag because of its past obsessions with "glamour" photography).

Pentax DA* 60-250 vs. Tamron 70-200 on FF (K1) which one would you pick?

Have you looked at the article I wrote about that topic?

Going to a machine shop will indeed be expensive (and non reversible except if you use a blank piece of metal, but then, even more expensive).

You could (and should, I'd say) contact a 3D printing service and have it printed. I did it for a few people (I have a colleague who does that, with an excellent quality printer). It will be much less expensive and the drawings are in the article.

Same advice as above: I suggest 3D printing it. The article shows that it's possible to line up the rectangle opening created by grinding the corners, but it's going to be a messy job, and you will get slightly curved corners even with a small diameter tool.

See the article, I believe all 60-250's vignette only "a bit" (impressive, all things considered). Cutting out just the corners (or printing an adequate design to mimic that) yields only a slight increase in resolution but does not improve vignetting as much as removing the whole baffle.

Is my FA35 2.0 as sharp as it should?

Looks like missed focus for the most part. Try live view first - it's the easy test. Try a tripod and 2 second self timer to get pseudo mirror lock up benefits. Also shoot it on the K-1; the K-30 focus system is pretty old and cranky and the fine focus adjustment will vary by body (not model per say) so you may find if you have a focus issue on the K-30 you may not have one on the K-1 or it might be in the opposite direction even!

I agree with stillshot2. You say you focused on the eye. In the second example among those presented, I find her eye to be quite sharp. And these are not posted at full size resolution. At f/2 there will be a shallow DOF, so not much of the scene will be in sharp focus. Of course, both the FA 35mm f/2 and the 31mm f/1.8 Limited, although capable of such sharp results wide open (unusual, especially in a fast lens!), both lenses are still not at their very best wide open. I don't see anything wrong based on what you show here. It is certainly not the way to do a definitive lens test, but as a quick check it passes the test easily.

The parts that are in focus of your test shots look pretty sharp to me. I'd like to see comparisons of the same subjects with your 31mm.

Just get an FA31 that already has some exterior damage, and then don’t worry about it. Use it, scratch it up some more, enjoy it.

Your lens is plenty sharp for the portions of the frames that are in-focus.* This is readily apparent.

Conventional wisdom for lens sharpness testing include removing or minimizing all other factors that might contribute to softness. In practice with either of your cameras that means:
  • Use of a high-detail, high contrast, flat target parallel to the focal plane

  • On tripod

  • Moderate distance from target (about 20x the focal length)

  • SR disabled

  • Time delay and/or remote shutter release, mirror up, electronic shutter or whatever allows minimization of user and mirror-induced vibration. With my K-3, I use a wired remote and 2s delay or mirror-up if I am feeling particularly fussy.

  • Manual focus using magnified live view. I prefer doing this with focus peaking turned off. Switching out of live view for the actual exposure might be wise, depending on camera.

Your K-30 should work fine, though the K-1 has more ways to avoid camera vibration.

* There is a mix of front/back focus

Can't view from my phone right now.

However these questions are likely to come up: Did you auto focus, manual focus, liveview or use the viewfinder?

It is FA 35mm f2. DA 35mm f2.4 is another lens (almost same optical design, but different lens)
Those photos could be sharper, but most lenses are not super sharp wide open.
Maybe you just need focus adjustment. There are many threads about Focus adjust function in DSLRs. you can print out focus chart and use other tools. At f2 even a couple mm misfocusing can make the whole photo seem blurry. I would start with this. Make sure you give the lens enough time to focus and the SR to activate (the above sample photos seem to be done in slightly dark location)

And while the FA 35mm is pretty sharp, it is possible the FA 31mm spoiled you. FA 31mm is legendary lens and FA 35mm f2 is cheaper. It is not terrible, but it is not on the same level

Btw you can check reviews and sample photos here (note that some of the samples have digital sharpening added):

Past tests of the fa 31 and fa 35 from the past I have read showed better edge to edge sharpness wide open on the fa 35 than 31 with higher center sharpness on the fa 31.

Neither lens should lack sharpness.
