K-1 II PEF Incompatible with macOS Catalina

OS support for thumbnail previews is usually no more than extraction of (compressed) preview JPEG(s) from the RAW file. Pentax RAW (both PEF and DNG) contain several of these at different resolutions including one at full resolution. The EXIF metadata includes the camera model and operating systems usually constrain support to specific models despite no difference in the file organization or locations of the preview images from one model to the next.

K-1 II PEF Incompatible with macOS Catalina

You are correct, the resulting file includes a rendered image (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, etc.) and/or the original RAW (PEF, NEF, and many others, including DNG(!)) and/or both along with Adobe XMP consistent with Adobe's tools telling how to render. However, that file belongs a specific subset of the DNG standard. DNG RAW is something entirely different and more similar to PEF than a PEF converted to a DNG. There is also something called a "linear" DNG where image data (think RGB pixels) are packaged as data. Linear DNG files are very similar to TIFF image files except that they are different. ;) A good example of linear DNG is the output of the PixelShift2DNG utility.

I'm really not much of a DNG geek except that I have a long-standing interest in creating synthetic DNG RAW files for doing forensic inquiries into things like "pulling" shadow detail from underexposed areas of the capture.

Welcome to the Pentax Forums!

Based on the above, what you get with Pentax is more variety on your shelf. The K-70 is a high featured and robust mid-range APS-C camera at an entry level price and is arguably the best camera on the planet in its market segment and definitely the best dSLR in that segment. Current lens selection from Pentax is such that most people will run out of money before they exhaust the options. Legacy lens options from Pentax and 3rd-party are impressive. Current lens offerings from third-party sources is less impressive.

Given the K-70's pricing, I suggest buying new and mating the body to the DA 16-85/3.5-5.6 as a walk-around zoom. If buying used, I suggest a lightly-used KP or K-3II.

FWIW...members here are not brand ambassadors, just owners, some more enthusiastic than others. I could be shooting any of the brands you listed, but see no obvious advantages over what I currently shoot with other than novelty of different tech.

For Pentax, PEF and DNG are data equivalent and probably data identical.

1.4 lens yes or no

Just to be clear...mirror interference was never an issue with any M42 Pentax lens on an M42 Pentax body. The interference issues with the 8-element Super Tak 50/1.4 on the "green R" SV and S1a had to do with clearance for the aperture actuation "flipper"/pusher on the body. Likewise, a similar problem exists for the S-M-C Tak 50/1.4 on those same bodies.

I will save you some trouble...to the best of my knowledge there are no Pentax nor third-party compact offerings that support optical master/controller for P-TTL.

1+ ...and add macro to the use cases. This "feature" is problematic for users of flash in multiple scenarios and for those needing to exercise fine (manual) focus for tasks such as focus stacking along with exposure compensation.

KP Firmware 1.3 released

There are some folk who feel that firmware updates are for other than bug fixes and/or support for new lenses/accessories and that lack of updates indicates inattention from the maker. Generally, with Pentax, a paucity of updates indicates that the original product was both stable and mature on release. The KP definitely fits into that category.

Six, in total...

FWIW...much as the GRIII is a very cool and desirable camera, it was not particular mature or stable on release in 2018. Of the six updates (the last being July 2020), three were fixes for bugs or inadequacies/deficiencies. The others were, IMHO, usability and UI tweaks that were probably intended for the original release.

The question of KP as flagship has been tossed around the Pentax Forums for years. The description in the detailed PF review (July 2017) is pretty accurate, "...premium mid-range model between the upper entry-level K-70 and flagship K-3 II."

FWIW...it is good that Pentax extended firmware support for the updated lenses. That is an indication of continued support for the camera and affirmation that its owners are important.

Almost any Takumar will fit with almost any Spotmatic. There may be problems regarding the SP F, ES, and ESII (same mount shared on all three models). There is a cautionary note in the ES/ESII manuals* calling out the following as not compatible:
  • Super Takumar 55/1.8 early variant with reverse direction aperture ring

  • Super Takumar (non-SMC/S-M-C) 50/1.4 (no distinction between 7 and 8 element versions)

  • Non-Takumar lenses

I own the early variant ST 55/1.8 and can confirm that it fouls the aperture ring position coupling in the SP F body. I don't own either version of the ST 50/1.4 variants for testing. Additional information on the problem as well as how to test for compatibility may be found at:
Spotmatic F, ES, ESII | Third-party Lens Compatibility - PentaxForums.com
Don't apply force to mount any lens/accessory to an SP F, ES, or ESII body!

* Not in my copy of the SP F manual, but assumed to apply to that camera as well.

Simple optical trigger is supported using the YN560xx S1 setting when the built-in is set to W-lightning* or S1 when the built-in is using P-TTL.

BTW...Gorgeous photos! I bet the happy couple was very pleased. :)

Steve

* or when shooting with a lens that does not support body control of aperture. In that case the built-in flash defaults to manual.

They should work fine in the manner you used them with other gear.

There is no magic on either the flash or the camera end of things. I use a pair of YN560iii with my K-3, on and off camera, wired/non-wired, and with/without a Yongnuo-brand controllers. Just remember that sync is the only control managed from the camera and that sync is always present at shutter speeds below 1/180s.
  • On hot shoe...works like any other manual flash

  • With PC (wired) sync...ditto the above

  • Wireless trigger from on-camera flash...use S1 if on-camera is full manual and S2 if on-camera is P-TTL

  • Wireless trigger from Yongnuo radio transmitter or controller depends on capabilities of transmitter. My YN-RF603II will both wake-up and fire the YN560iii. With the YN-560TXII, control of zoom, intensity, and multi are also provided. Groups are supported by both flash and transmitters.

Of the above, PC sync is the least handy. If used, take care to not lose the cap from the K-7 port. It is proprietary and replacements are hard to find. I usually use radio wireless for off camera, but have used the optical wireless for some setups.

I happen to share the same myopic perspective, at least in regard to placement. The thread is about an accessory for Sony E cameras and is only tangentially related to the lenses it adapts and belongs in the non-Pentax area of the site. Sony owners and potential Sony owners are the only subset of forum members that have an interest in the device. Put it in the non-Pentax area and it will enjoy the usual spirited discussion. Put it here and it will get somewhat less attention.

IMHO, anyway...

I shoot DNG or PEF and do the monochrome conversion in post processing on my computer. As noted above, the easiest way do in-camera monochrome is by using the custom image feature (right press on 4-way controller). Once set, it should persist until changed to something else.

The profile will be what makes the color balance of your TIFF. While similar in some ways, it is not the same as an ICC profile used by output devices or LUTs used by videographers. You make the profile and RT uses it to interpret the RAW data and when used to make the TIFF, the work is done with no need to embed.
