I have been watching it for hours at a time... Many thanks to RUV.is (national news agency) and mbl.is for hosting and making available the live streaming web cams! There are quite a few locals who are going out to the site and shooting incredible footage from the ground and with drones. One, in fact, ended up with his drone losing its control signals but not the camera feed, and we witnessed its end as it flew directly into one of "Bob's" vents... Good channels: The Reykjavik Grapevine, Daily Iceland, GutnTog, and Viðburðastofa Vestfjarða... Lots of others, but many of them are ripping off these guys as well as the public feeds.
As a geologist by training if not by work, and a lifelong volcano nut - I wish wish wish I was one of those tourists standing there watching Surtr at work...

Cold prairie drives were the decisive factor in my choice of which hybrid to buy, back when I was in Nebraska. Had a 56 mile drive to work, plus regular work trips 550ish miles to Denver. A very practical salesman pointed out out that the Prius uses the gas engine to supplement the battery pack, whereas the Civic uses the battery to supplement the gas engine. If that battery goes out for some reason, in January, in western Nebraska where it can be 20 miles between exits (let alone towns), things ain’t gonna be fun. The Honda can keep going, if with less power, to wherever it needs to go for fixin’... He made a sale with that, and I never regretted it. Great little workhorse of a car.

Yes, the variants are going to be a royal PITA for a while... In part, because I’m sure it will encourage the anti vaxxers to whine about “See, I told you it doesn’t do any good” and that sort of nonsense.

Received my 2nd dose of Pfizer this morning. So far no side effects. I have presumably gotten my immune response boosted. So far, no sign of any superpowers appearing, nor can I stream the Bill Gates channel via 5G (yet). Fingers crossed!

Nah, take a whole lot more than that. Worldwide average is 45(ish) doing something at any given time, right now I think the count is around 50-52, something like that. Now a biggie like Yellowstone could certainly do a good number on North America and probably set back civilization for a good long while, but humans are as adaptable as cockroaches. It would likely take another asteroid plus a Deccan Trapps type eruption to completely get rid of us. :)

And on an entirely different note, it would appear that Iceland is busy adding some new 'frosting' to the basaltic layer-cake that makes up the lovely wee island. The Fagradalsfjall volcanic field, near the town of Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula, has begun spouting ash and cinders into the night sky. So far no reports of flowing lava, and no imminent danger to towns or roads. As a geologist and volcano nut, my heart is thrilled to see Mum Nature in action.

Important safety note: When you’re using a big belt sander to smooth a slice of wood, you really ought to make sure it’s the *wood* in contact with the rapidly moving abrasive belt, not your fingertips. This will prevent you from leaking all over the place... It will also prevent the (physician) wife from becoming a tiny bit concerned about your ability to interact with power tools, after she has cleaned and dressed the wounds properly.
On the plus side, I now have as much respect for sanders as I already did for saws and lathes...

Saw that accident on the news. Damned if I could figure out how he went over the side, but I was sure impressed by those safety chains (and the bolts holding the truck’s rear axle attached)...
