Pretty fascinating tech, but yeah. Price wise, it's gonna be way out of my league. In the end, all of these higher end cameras are not even on my radar, 'cause they're way too pricey! Hahaha! :p

The post above this one seems to answer it.

There's still a ton of stuff I'd like to know about it as well, but it's mainly AF related questions that I have.

^ I'm going to guess that once the K-3III is released to the general public, more than likely there will be an update to PDCU5. Hopefully that will end up solving your issues, but given their track record, who knows.

It works fine on my AMD Ryzen 5 3600 machine, but I had all kinds of issues & headaches on the old AMD FX-8350 machine. I'm running PDCU5 on Windows.

Yes. The interface is not that great. It does seem like something that came out of the 80's. Hahaha!

Yes. I'm looking forward to the upcoming reviews. The AF does look impressive. It will probably overwhelm the non-AF users. Hahaha! :p

If all goes well, I'll be buying it sometime near the end of the year. I also want that DA* 16-50mm PLM lens.

Makes me wonder if Ricoh will eventually release firmware that will allow more control of what's going on. Like where it separates the types of subject recognition in a menu that allows you to be more specific as to what you're trying to focus on. That or it gets more refined in the K-3IV in about +-7 years from now. :p

But yeah. If the automation is very good, as in the camera knows what you're trying to focus on once you set your AF point on the subject, then it's all good too. Lots of AF speculations at the moment. I guess we'll see what the AF system is capable of once it gets released to the general public & people start playing with it.

^ Bright tends to give the images a yellow color cast. It's worse with Landscape. Natural is very flat. It can make the most dramatic images look quite boring. Hahaha! I only use Bright for pictures taken outdoors on a sunny day.

I have that TSM Natural PP3 file that punches up the Natural image tone & the images end up having similar contrast & brightness that you get from Bright images, but without the oversaturation & funky color cast. I use this most of the time. It doesn't work with the auto-matched tone curve, though.

Hmmmmm..... I wonder if the K-3III has an updated screw motor. That plus the updated AF system could make those old screw drive lenses semi-usable for tracking? An unknown paradox..... Hahaha! :p

Not yet. I'm not buying any camera gear until the end of this year. I am pretty dead set on buying the K-3III, though. It seems like they gave it a massive improvement in AF tracking capabilities, but I am waiting for the reviews to come in to really make a final decision. I also need to sell a Mazda Miata that I have sitting at my house. That's going to fund the camera plus the 2 DA* lenses that I want. Nothing's wrong with the car, but I rarely drive it anymore. Getting older I guess. Hahaha!

The only other camera that could potentially sway my decision would be the upcoming Sony a7IV, but I think I'm more dead set on the K-3III. There's something about an OVF that an EVF can't quite match. The Nikon Z6II is also another contender, but I'm still leaning more towards the Sony if I were to switch at all. :p

So I'm not going nuts with darktable. Hahaha! Yeah. The RawTherapee jpegs do look better overall. I think I'll pretty much only concentrate on RawThreapee for now. I'm so used to it & it just seems easier for the most part. I've already put in about 7 years of use as well. :p

Good to know. So PDCU5 is basically the only software on the planet that can match Pentax colors 100% dead on.

I can get fairly close with RawTherapee & Adobe .dcp files, but it's not 100% exact. I'd say it's more like more like 80% to 90% close. I think it's an Adobe .dcp color thing or a combined RawTherapee & Adobe .dcp color thing.

I'm just waiting to see how good the AF really is in the hands of 3rd party reviewers & Pentax users. I want to see more video & photo samples of it in action as well. It seems like the camera can pick out subjects, then faces, & then pupils, but it seems to be automatic for now. There isn't a direct Eye-AF option........ yet? Maybe an eventual firmware update could add that feature is possible? Who knows. :p

I know that the only way this camera will achieve the most optimal AF performance is to attach a fast focusing lens like the like the DA 55-300mm PLM & the upcoming DA* 16-50mm PLM, but how well will it drive screw drive lenses? Will screw drive lenses focus faster with the K-3III than they did with the K-3II & KP? All the DA Limiteds are screw driven, so that's why I'm wondering. It's not a deal breaker for me since I usually take it way slower when I put on a prime & they usually tend to be screw driven, but I am curious about screw driven lenses in general on the K-3III. :D

I'm also hoping that they update all the DA* lenses with faster & more reliable AF motors. I really want the whole set. I'll be getting the updated DA* 16-50mm & the recent DA* 11-18mm lenses for starters. :D

^ Yeah. I've used it, but it still seems to obliterate all fine detail. I've even tried modifying some module parameters after that, but it all ends up going down the drain. I think I just suck at it. Haha!

^ Nice images.

I still can't seem to grasp a lot of the modules in darktable. I can get some very usable ISO 12800 photos from my K-50 RAW files in RawTherapee & PDCU5 with very minimal ease, but I can't anything remotely good from darktable at that ISO. I really do wish that someone would take their time to make some Pentax specific presets that would make darktable easier to use, like I've done with the PP3 files for RawTherapee. I've seen & have gone through some d.styles online, but none of them make the higher ISO photos usable. It's more of how they look, versus how to control noise. I'm pretty sure that darktable is quite capable, but I do have a very hard time with it.

*Le sigh....* :p

It looks like they finally took a massive leap forward with the AF system. They mention all X, Y, & Z axis! You can now finally see what you're actually tracking! No more brief AF point lighting! This is exciting! More than likely I'll be getting this camera by the end of the year.

K-3 III To Be Released Next Week

^ When you have fractions of a second to take the shot, you basically have no time whatsoever to see if it's 100% completely in focus. You just hope it is.

When you take the time to shoot, then yeah. You can clearly see after a few seconds of fiddling around with the AF or MF.

That's the difference between shooting a moving & static subject. Some cameras can do moving subjects fairly well & some can't quite nail them.
