Yes, but that is not something I would pay extra for. Waiting time between shots is something else though...

Well, that sorts that out. I'll be buying extra sandisk 30 Mb/s cards, no point in spending more on faster cards. Thanks for the replies!

Does anyone know what the maximum writing speed to SD card is for the K5? There are all these extremely expensive high speed cards on the market, but I suspect there is a speed beyond which the K5 becomes the limiting factor.

Even if you don't own one, you can download the user manual for the Spyder Lenscal, which contains some useful pointers on the procedure (like what the optimal testing distance is)

Metz 58 AF-1 underexposure in P-TTL

@Kazy Oops!! You were right... :o

@all

I tried switching the 'Zoom size' to on, which enables a correction for sensor size. If you do that, the histograms come a lot closer to what the pentax does without flash. (which incidentally also under-exposes a bit at 55 mm)

You do loose power this way though, since the reflector zoom now matches the actual lens distance instead of the 35mm equivalent so it illuminates a wider area than the shot covered by the sensor.
When you are using a diffuser or bounce off the ceiling that does not matter, and the exposure looks spot-on.

I wonder if Metz has a correction factor wrong somewhere....

Good to know I am not the only one :-)

I'll do some more testing with the spotbeam. The manual is a little vague about what actually works with a Pentax, so I wanted to be sure before declaring it a DOA.

After reading this link:

Flash Modes for Pentax Photo Gallery by Steve Jacob at pbase.com

I get the impression P-TTL is so complex you never know what it is actually doing and are better off using either Auto or Manual for full control :-(

If I can ask you guys something else: does your 58 smell 'funny' after taking a number of flash pictures in succession? The housing does not heat up in any way, but the reflector smells like overheating electronics.

I just received a new Mext Mecablitz 58 AF-1 and am in the process of working my way through all the settings in combination with my k200d. I have already flashed the latest V1.1 firmware.

When taking pictures in a room with windows I took the same shot (in P) using Automatic, P-TTL and no flash. The histogram without flash matches the one with the Metz in Automatic mode, but in P-TTL mode it underexposes about one stop. Can anyone with the same combo confirm this?

Another question is : can anyone confirm the spot-beam function does not work with a k200d?

How to get the Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 to work

The two flash tubes can be swiveled for 20 deg. , so you can play with the covered area.

I have not tried how wide it can get. Using it to augment the build in flash is not really practical, since the ringflash would generate a large shadow. And it only has a guide number of 15m.

All in all I would not recommend using a macro flash for regular in-door shooting. You would need to adjust the tubes manually and at best end up with a similar result as you can get automatically with the build-in flash.

You can use it as a separate slave flash. I once had someone hold it in their hand to illuminate the face from the side.

Yes, p-ttl works.
For the rest, I haven't used it manually but it should simply support everything the internal flash supports..

I am a novice, and started out uring LR simply because it was cheaper than full PS. At the time I thought it was a subset of PS filters geared towards raw processing (similar to elements). I soon found out differently, sadly there is not much integration between the two.

I like the interface of LR a lot better, IMHO it fits closer to the workflow. But some basic stuff is missing, so you still need PS :(

Right now I shoot in PEF, import in LR as a DNG. I do pre-selections in LR, make subsets and selections etc. I do own PS4 by now, but always call it from within LR using the 'Open as Smart Object in Photoshop' after doing the basic wb corrections etc in LR. If you do it that way, the result will be saved inside the collection you are working in next to the original raw file. It makes it much easier to keep track. The final export to jpg or printing is done from LR.

My ideal would be to be able to add my personal selection of PS modules/filters to the LR interface to get a unified workflow. But that is probably a long way off.

How to get the Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 to work

Hi all,

I just spent the afternoon getting the Metz 15 MS-1 Macro flash to work with my K200D. Beginners stuff, but I just thought I'd post where the various settings are hidden so the next newbe like me can find it here. The manual is a bit terse.

The Metz functions as a wireless slave unit to the build-in flash.

On the K200D:

- Menu, Custom settings, Flash in Wireless mode : Off

This setting makes the build-in flash act as a controller only. It only sends out sync pulses but does not illuminate the subject. This avoids creating a shadow of your lens and allows you to operate the Metz without using the included 'infrared Clamp'

- Fn key, Flash mode (down arrow) : Wireless mode

Enables the wireless flash mode. Without this setting, the build-in flash works as a normal flash

On the Metz:

Select 'Pen Remote' and 'all channels'

Fun fact: the manual warns you to only use 'internal focussing objectives' to avoid overtaxing the AF engine with the weight of the unit. How many macro lenses out there are internal focussing?

It is a very light unit, so I'll just take my chances :-)

AFAIK xpm files are used by gnome for icons and background images in windows.

My guess it is a missing icon file; just try to copy and rename one from another app and see what happens. (there should be a few under /usr/share/pixmaps/)

I ordered it for this price, which means they have to deliver it for that when it comes in. :) I found it for the same price on another Dutch website which did have them in stock, so it seems that this is going to be the retail price over here. I wonder where the huge price difference is coming from. AFAIK Metz is an A-brand too.

Over here (the Netherlands) the Metz now costs about half the price of the Pentax unit....

EUR 259 - Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1
EUR 329 - Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Flashlite (Pentax version)
EUR 499 - Pentax AF-160FC

CameraNU.nl - Metz - Flitser

The site lists it as being on back-order, but they do show the price.

I think I will order one; I always wanted a macroflash, but was put off by the high prices up until now.

OK, so the wb setting, while not part of the data in the raw file is used for metering? So having the correct wb setting matters while shooting and is not only a pp issue.

I am still trying to get a grip on what is saved in raw, how much happens in post / jpg concersion, and how much processed-raw data is used for metering. All new stuff for me :)

stupid newbe question here: is the histogram based on the raw file or is it generated from the embedded jpg that is used for the LCD display?

Because if it is only the build-in jpg conversion that is crappy, it is annoying but not really fatal. (and compensating on camera could actually be a bad idea)

[edit: added]

Is that while processing in raw with the white balance on "Camera" or on a fixed value? I just wonder if it is not the white balance detection in the camera that is fluctuating, which should not affect the raw file. I remember reading some reviews of the k200d saying the white balance auto detect was not very good. That would influence the histogram if the white balance was taken from the exif data.

I am new to digital photography, but I suppose Nyquists law still applies here. Which means that the smallest detail you can accurately reproduce would be 2 pixels wide and/or high. That does not take aliassing etc. into account, so I suppose that whatever the smallest detail your lens system is able to produce, the sensor needs to put 3-4 pixels on it to be able to reproduce it digitally without aliassing distorting it.

In other words, you need mucho pixels :)

How to open an AF-330ftz flashgun

After taking out all the screws I could find (just 2 at the base) I took a deep breath and a large screwdriver and forced the housing open.

It turned out nothing of the gunk had gotten inside the electronics. However, the battery contact points consist of four small retractable metal pans (domes?) which are pushed against the battery by four springs mounted on a small pcb. Salt had crystallized on the springs, breaking the contact with the metal pans.

After cleaning the stuff off, the flashgun works again.

This flashgun has an automatic zoom reflector. It even corrects for the 1.5 digital focal length correction. When the lens is at 18 mm, the reflector zooms for 28 mm, lens 35mm gives 50 mm zoom on the flashgun. Nice!

But P-DDL does not work with the k200d, so on auto everything is overexposed :(

I stored my old AF-330tgz flashgun with the batteries still in it :(

I cleaned up the resulting mess from the battery compartment, but I suspect some of the stuff has gotten inside the unit.

Does anyone know how to open it up without wrecking it? I can find two tiny screws at the base, but with these removed I still cannot open it without resorting to brute force...

Thanks for the warning! I wasn't aware that could be a problem...

After some hunting on the Pentax site I found this in the k200d faq.

So it seems it will work, but with reduced functionality
