Best screen ever for manual focus : Canon ee-S!!!

Any suggestions where to find the micro prism screens? I'd like to try one :) I focus manually and the little red box is irritating me all the time now!! :)

I've just looked at katzeye's website and there's a notice saying they've sold the business! I know they were very expensive, which is a shame as they look like they had good stuff?

Ahhh, it's something I'm putting off because of the sheer choice of stuff out there. It's hard to know what to get. But, I have reached the point where I want more accurate control over focussing, and I always shoot manual anyway. So, time to dip my toe in the water! I use a k10d, and an embarrassingly large selection of lenses (ebay is a terrible temptation!). I remember using an old slr when I was a kid, and the screen had a focus ring. So, what to go for nowadays?!

Is it's bokeh boken then?? ;) I've got quite a few lenses in my collection now (surprise!) and so am happy to use different ones for different effects. I like this 200mm because it's light :)

Just bought one for 20 less than an hour ago :) It's dark right now, but I've enjoyed seeing what it's like under street lights. Very nice! Metal hood is a nice feature, and I think I will be keeping this lens handy whenever I go out and about. Nice and light and a reasonable zoom prime.

My newbie apprehension buying used lens

I've been picking up stuff all year both from eBay and also my local camera shop. All cheap 2nd hand stuff. I've stuck with k-mount lenses and have been having fun with them. I disagree about the zooms - I think they are worth a shot if cheap enough. I have two that I use all the time (a vivitar 70-200 one and a bell &howell 60-300). I have found them great to have, and yes the primes are great too. the lens reviews on this site are worth looking at for each lens you are thinking of getting, and you will be surprised how good some of these lenses are rated (primes and zooms!). Great fun to be had, and if you decide you don't like a lens then you are free to resell it on eBay and get your money back(theoretically!)

just avoid any lenses that have fungus and you should be fine :)

It's a no-brainer :D You will be spoiled rotten with the k10d, and I'd hold onto it if you ever get another body as you will miss it if you sell... :)

I'm liking my new k10d more and more, In fact I've gone and got the battery grip and spare battery for it - something I told myself I would only do when I was sure I had the camera I want to stick with :)

It's simply stunning now for portrait orientation - I am amazed at the difference in feel, it isn't rushed anymore like when taking portraits with twisted hands!

I'm still getting used to the camera, but will happily post some shots when I feel I have a handle on how it responds. It's coming up to my favourite time of year, when misty mornings combine with later sunrise times (!) :D

I agree about the k10d with handgrip - I just got that lineup, and it is a brick. In a really, really good way though(!). I do like the Olympus Omd, as there was something VERY very special about its build quality and feel, but now that I have a kit bag ( or two!) of pentax lenses, my desire for the oly is waning... for now!

It's all personal choice isn't it, but for me as a "manual only" photographer I don't have the desire (or need) for the latest and greatest. Saves me a fortune! :D

Isn't it great to have all these choice though!!

Fair point :) Yes, I agree that cameras have strengths and weaknesses. If I had to do weddings and kid shots, I'd be after lightning fast autofocus too! :D

I'm not sure how good the k3 would be compared to the Nikon, but I wouldn't have any "brand loyalty" if I had work which needed specific criteria for the tools required. If pentax can't do the job, find something which can. :)

Hmmm, I never have to tweak my white balance too much (though it's always worth playing with it no matter what camera you have IMO). Also, I'm a little puzzled about your comment about having to delete so many "out of focus shots" every time you begin editing. I don't know what you've been doing, but I shoot totally manually because that's the way I am, and I very rarely get a focus wrong. Maybe, just maybe, it wasn't the camera you were using that was the problem???

Im happy for you with your nikon, but worry about it a little because you are still getting some shots out of focus. Seems a lot of money to spend just to find out you might need to learn better basic camera skills???!

I don't have a nice camera like the k5, and cut my pentax teeth on a k100d which has a smaller, dimmer, harder to see viewfinder. It didn't stop me though. As for dual sd slot, wouldn't that just mean you can back up all those out of focus shots?? ;)

Hmm,

I hate to say it, but if this stuff is popular and sells loads then who is to knock it?? :D

I am seeing more and more obvious (to anyone into photography) over-the-top effects processing in galleries. And, if someone likes a picture and buys it, then it has done its purpose. However, I do wince whenever I see sun rays beaming on a picture with ridiculous lack of subtlety!!

Now, posting your stuff online does mean you are willing to let other people judge, so I've no problem with ripping into bad technique. The internet is a great enabler for all levels of art/hobby/hack. :)

Mac / Aperture users

I'm in the same boat. Photoshop is a no-go with their new business model. Apple seem to be heading in a bad direction. These big companies seem to be forgetting that they are providing professionals a service and we are not just dumb consumers (err, hopefully not!!)

I ended up using Photo Supreme for cataloging my photos. It is great, if a bit clunky sometimes on my mac. What I like about it is that it doesn't try and tie you into their product. All the tags you assign to the photos are stored within the exif data of the image. So, you can abandon their software and still have organised photos.

I am sure aperture is slicker, but do you really want to be tied to using apple software? I don't plan on abandoning mac to go back to PC (!) but I don't want apple telling me when I need to pay them even more money! :)

Do I need more software? If so which?

Just a quick add-on to this thread: I've been refining my software this year, and I have settled on using Photo Supreme as a cataloging program (a little bit clunky sometimes, but has enough nice features which make it worthwhile), and I only use photoshop to access third party topaz labs filters. If I had to stop using photoshop I could just get the topaz standalone program for using them instead. But, using RPP for initial tweaking of the raw file before firing up topaz has given me the best way of doing my stuff. I tend to take shots which don't need a lot of tweaking, as I quite like the film look of my camera anyway. RPP is free (donation based) and Photo Supreme cost me 60. I've spent about 100 on topaz filters (denoise, detail and mask ones are essential!). Not too pricey, and certainly recommended more than photoshop. I use an old version which I've had for years, and don't like their new system of paying through the nose forever. It just isn't worth the money IMO when there are better alternatives for filters (topaz, hands down).

I guess it also depends on what type of photography you are into and how much time you want to spend in post. I tend to take more shots on a trip than I use, and only edit a select few through all the software. RPP is the bees knees for what I like to do.

Vivitar lens won't mount to k10d

Same concern here - I've got the same vivitar lens and been using it on my k100d with no problems. I'd be very surprised if the k10d isn't identically built for k lenses(!). Try googling some images of lens mounts to make sure you have a k mount.

I got my k100d off eBay, and have just got a k10d off eBay too. I have tried k5's in my local camera store, but they are out of my price range. It has shown me that the viewfinder on the k100d is a tad small, though it's a great camera. I wear glasses and so am used to not seeing all the picture at once by now! :) I'm hoping my k10d will be nicer to look through for me, but again at my budget range it's always sight unseen (though plenty of reading up online first!)

Looks like I'm not the only one that separates making videos and taking pictures into two separate compartments! :) The only device that gets to do both is my phone, as they are just snapshots and quick videos. I would use a dedicated machine to make serious videos if that was what I was interested in. At that point, a dslr wouldn't stand a chance by comparison.

A viewfinder that is big enough would be wonderful. I wear glasses and am so used to not seeing all the image in the viewfinder that the ability to do this would come as a shock!! :) Maybe they need to acknowledge that photographers like to actually see what they are shooting! ;)
