One of my first shots with this. Think I need to get some b&w filters for this.

And oddly enough my K1000 from 1978 also has a dent on the Pentaprism - how it got it is lost in the mists of time.

It's not a K1000 or any of the Spots I've checked thus far.

This was quite some time ago but as Suomi is getting a mention - a rather old film shot - almost certainly on my ME Super. Judging by the colour certainly the SMC M 50mm I had/have.

I used to work for a Finnish company and travelled there regularly from 1992 to 2004. Miss that country and it's people. This shot was 1995.

Have recently started using it again. What a perfect package.

You might want to look further afield. Based on advice in here I bought a 645N and a lens from Japan recently. One of the best eBay purchasing decisions ever. Both camera and lens are immaculate and exactly as described if not better. And they arrived quicker than another shipment from NY to SF.

Caveat emptor,YMMV of course. Although if I was buying a 6x7 series I'd assume a CLA would be required/prudent at some point.

Favoured Portrait Lens ?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'm probably going to look out for the 135LS at some point. Whilst AF lenses would be nice I really bought the 645 to scratch a specific itch for a landscape camera - time will tell where it takes me :-)

I've already started looking at lenses for the Pentacon Six . I already have 35mm LBA - I really don't need another one !

Is there such a thing as a portrait lens "85mm" lens for the 645 range ? Normally I'd look for something equivalent around the 135mm range but with the exception of the 135LS there's only the 120 macro near to that in the 645 native lenses.

Any thoughts or suggestions - perhaps look at adapted 6x7 Taks ?

I'm a newbie in MF land so please be gentle with me :-)

Pentax ME Super and MEII Winder (oh I so wanted that winder). SMC-M 50mm F2 and some Fujichrome tranny film.

The lovely colour is down to a Cokin tobacco filter and possibly a grey grad for good measure. Cokin was quite the thing at the time. Easy to laugh at now but for me at least that (and being film) it gives me a real nostalgia buzz. That may also be due to it being my first sojourn abroad. 1981 - Lac Leman -Geneva. I was 23 :-)

I bought and got refurbed a replacement ME Super, the original having died in the 90s. The MEII Winder I had a carried on working until I put it on the refurbed ME-S. Boo-Hoo - I'd kept it for 30 years. Now too cheap to be worth repairing.

As per my thread elsewhere I eventually bought a 645N body and separate lens from Japan. Both are immaculate. I don't think I've ever bought s/h gear on eBay that was so spotless and lacking in wear.

Loading roll film took me back to the 60s and some of my dads really old cameras - probably a Brownie.

I feel like I need to put it on a felt cushion :-)

Film arriving today (mix of Ilford b&w and some Kodak colour).

Urgent need to get lens and body caps and some filters.

I'm turning into my old dad. Buying more cameras and lenses than I need and going off into niche photo pursuits and interests. He'd also be fascinated by the latest tech with the ability for PP and the capabilities of the modern digital realm gear. He'd probably still be using his Spots and old Leicas but it's a huge regret that we can't chew the fat over such stuff. I hope you enjoyed your Dad's birthday and here's to many more !

Well the lens has arrived - all I need now is some film - that's somewhere in Texas on a rather long and indirect journey to me.

Lens is as spotless as the camera. I'm now worrying about marking it. Never been a concours car man - prefer a bit of patina but I seem to have bought a concours camera. I'd forgotten just how sweet an OVF was (and big). Still reaching for the non-existant focus mag button though :-)

How is that an order from B&H will take seven days + to get here from NY but the camera body I ordered on Thursday last week from Japan will be here this afternoon (following Monday) :-)

Needless to say the lens I bought won't be here until the end of the week. What will I do in the meantime - boo-hoo.

<<>>

Well the camera body has just arrived. Somewhat gobsmacked. It looks brand new. Not a mark on it. Now I await with some frustration the arrival of lens and film.

Pentax 645N - First lens ?

Appreciate all the comments guys. In the end I ummed and ahhhed about the choice of lens (and checked the cost of an adapter for a 6x7 lens) and bought a SMC Pentax-A 645 55mm F2.8 for the princely sum of $95 + shipping from a Japanese vendor on eBay. Time will tell if it proves to be a bargain. It appears to be mint if you'll forgive the expression. Certainly cleaner looking than many 35mm lenses I've bought of late.

A 70mm would perhaps have been a better starting point but I know my primary interest is landscape. That and having a gift voucher meant it cost me not very much at all....

It was interesting looking at the range of 645N available on ebay this morning. Most were from Japan - by a large amount. Most but certainly not all were in very good condition (if the photos are to be believed) and all generally priced very close to one another. There was the odd slightly tired ones but most seemed in surprisingly good shape - visually at least. Certainly not the like scruffy collection of lenses I've seen on my travel on nether regions of eBay.

I'm about to take the plunge and buy a 645N. It's my birthday - what can I say :-)

Sans lens of course. So I'd appreciate some advice on a starter lens to get a feel for the camera. I'd appreciate some economy having just bought the body and probably more of a general purpose lens until I work out what I really need and my bank balance has recovered.

Not averse to adapted 6x7 lens but unsure as to what is equivalent to say a 40-50 on 35mm. Please no arguments about equivalence either

I'm more inclined to landscape rather than portrait if that helps. Will be shooting MF too.

Thanks !

Yeh - my primary interest is black and white and I've always been a sucker for low ISO so the Pan F 50 is in my sights - time will tell if it's it's just too slow. I have the benefit of living in California where the weather does help. Having grown up and lived most of my life in the UK 50 ISO would be a challenge much of the time.

I've decided that if I'm going to do it I might as well go for it. In my case I think I'll get a 645N from Japan. It's my birthday this month. I'm worth it :-) Question is - which roll of film should I reach for first . Minded to try Ilford b&w first as that was my first love as a young photographer - probably all I could afford too :-)

There seems to be an issue with the battery contacts and availability of the battery module of the 645 - is it the same concern with the 645N ?

Thanks guys - yeh the battery corrosion issue seems to come up a lot online. Especially as a replacement part seems to be in short supply. Did wonder about getting one from Japan but not sure how much extra I'd be paying in duty and charges and they're mostly selling bodies so the price diff doesn't seem that great once you factor in a lens.

I just happened to be in the only local camera store with second hand kit, actually the only local camera store. Made the mistake of asking them if they had any 645 bodies in. Yes we do sir. The original (it's so 80s") 645 body , 120 back and the A 75mm lens. $400.

Despite my credit card quivering like a crazy thing I did think it probably best to ask a few questions in here first.

1) Anything I should specifically look out for in terms of the camera actually working.
2) Things that might be faulty that i might not notice coming from 35mm film / MILC
3) Does that price sound within the ball park ?

First impressions were that it was actually quite a "handleable" camera. I'd expected it to be I dunno - more bulky and hard to hold. The VF wasn't as gloomy as some reviewers had suggested and I was inside using it. Actually I rather liked the optical VF - realise now how much I miss one cf. an EVF. Oh and the mirror slap. People aren't going to miss that.
