This image was taken with my old istDL back in 2007. It sums up Canada for me.

I chose this image with the foreground in it as it gives the photo more depth and realism I think. I have some without as well but they looked almost unreal.

KP vs K3 ii for wildlife photography

In reply to DeadJohn, I guess I used the wrong terminology there. What I should have said was image quality. I made this comment based on the review on this site See below quote from that article...

'While we still consider the Pentax K-3 II to be the APS-C flagship model due to features such as higher burst speeds and dual SD slots, as this review will show, the Pentax KP actually surpasses the K-3 II in image quality and customization options and it doesn't lag far behind the K-3 II in ruggedness. The KP exposes the K-3 II's age, as the KP is more modern in many ways, through built-in Wi-Fi and a facelifted user interface to faster general performance.'

In reply to Asylfox, those links were helpful thanks. I reread them and combined with comments from everyone else I think I will go with the KP at this point as I don't need the higher burst rate the way I like to work. The higher ISO is quite attractive for low light situations. I will get the battery grip to give me the the greater battery life and by the sound of it it will be about the same weight as the K3ii without the grip. Pentax/Ricoh Australia is out of KP stock at the moment so may have to wait or look elsewhere.

If they bring out a new flagship to replace the K3ii soon I guess I can get it as well and if not no loss.

Thanks to everyone for their input. Happy shooting.

KP vs K3 ii for wildlife photography

I am trying to make up my mind as to which is better for wildlife photography. The Newer KP or the older K3 ii. They both have different features that may be advantageous. The burst rate on the K3 or the better ISO on the KP. Does anyone have both bodies that can recommend from experience? I mostly use my KS-2 with a DA 150-450 at the moment. Max shutter rate is 5 fps.

Awesome reflections on one of the many lakes travelling up the Icefields Parkway from Lake Louise to Jasper.

I'm not real sure but if I put a 150-450 tele lens on a half frame camera say a KP and then on a K1, from the same point of taking an image will I get a different level of enlargement, or is the effect like just cropping the centre out of a full frame image. Does this make sense?

Hmmm, I think I will stick with the standard 100mm lens for the moment and explore its limits first. It may do all I need if I spend more time with it. Thank you all for your input.

After so many good comments about the Pentax DA 55-300 I think that may be my next purchase, I will use the Tamron on my old 6mp ist body.

Thanks for that info BROO I will definitely follow up on your advise.

When I was a teen (50 yrs ago) my first camera was a Canon AE1 & I used to use a bellows setup, would anyone know if that would be ok with the 100mm Macro lense / better than extension tubes? They are a lot more cumbersome for outside work but great in a studio environment.

Hi, Thanks, this shot was taken in St Petersburg in 2005. The building behind is the Naval Academy and they use the old battleship for training. The light was perfect, this shot is on the wall of my study now, one of my favorites. Enlarged to 1200mm wide, it held up great from a 6mp file.

Hi, I recently bought a D FA Macro 100mm F2.8 WR to pair with my K-S2. I,m really happy with it so far but was wondering how it would perform if I bought a set of auto extension tubes to use with it and what would be the best brand to buy? Do Pentax still make a set as there aren't any on offer on the Pentax Australia online shop.

I gave my old *istDL to my daughter a couple of years ago and only yesterday asked for it back again as it has hardly been used. She just uses her phone now. So will be getting it back and having a play with it. I took some great shots on it, some I even enlarged and still have on the wall like the one attached. Good call paulh.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your input. I think I will just stick with the Tamron 18-250 for travel use where I need a one lense walk around option. I gather the marginal improvement I will get from the 18-270 wold not be enough to justify the investment. I think I will use the money to invest in another lense to compliment it for architectural use perhaps the Pentax DA 12-24mm f/4 ED AL IF.
Thanks to hcc for the detailed reply, if it had WR I probably would change, that would swing the balance as I am going to Ireland net year and I gather it rains a lot there.

Thanks, yes I was thinking it wouldn't be worth it really, I mainly use it for overseas travel as my FDA 150-450 lense is rater heavy. I also have a D FA 100 macro and a DA 10-17 fisheye. As Adam suggested my other option was to get a DA 18-135 for overseas travel, as they are quite compact.

Hi, I currently have a Tamron 18-250 which I use on my K7 and K-S2 bodies. I am thinking of upgrading to the Pentax 18-270 lens. Just wondering if the performance increase would justify the investment?
