Today, I have excesive photo shooting in tae-kwon-doe - kids competion, and I took with me KP, and 70-300 mm old Zoom with AF.

--
With display off - all the time -

and
without checking the pics in play mode, almost nothing - just here and there - to be sure what I'm doing -

-
CAMERA WAS IN HIGH BURST MODE ALL THE TIME, - and it was turning off - every time I wasn't shooting. *Picture recording only L file size
--
/ *TECHNIQUE WAS TO SHOOT - SHORT BURSTS - WHEN KICKS WERE FLYIN IN THE AIR. /

---------

--

I hit the new record here. I don't know exact number of shoots, because on the begining I have another but almost dead empty battery, which was gone - after maybe 50 clicks.
--
RESULT

1750- OR APROXIMATELY ~1700 shoots from one battery !!!

hear hear

YES, YOU'RE RIGHT!

That mistake I would never do again.

Hmmm.... Finally some numbers at last :)

That battery is good enough, but shortter than that is just a pain.

I do believe, Pentax should implement some "battery saving" features ... But knowning them, and their development in firmware releases, it would never happened

KP was on his first mission last night.

I photograph dark disco space, with a many Live View mode, and with KP flash triggering my slave flash, in my hand. ( it's a technique I love to use when shooting people on events )
Kp was easy to handle. I pair it with also new Pentax 18-50 f4-5.6 little zoom and made a very sweet light combo

____________________________

So, with LV almost all the time ON - at least 70 % pics, ( I was watching to not overuse it - and I tried to camera turning ON - just, and when I want to shoot )

and Flash discharging in, at least 40 % pics with approximate usual manual value at 1/64

I was able to make 504 shoots with one full charged Pentax battery.

This is solid result . I can live with that. :)

I do also think that this battery is not yet on its full capacity power, because I charged it - and discharged only 5-6 times . :)

KP shutter release ... Wired and Wireless options that work !

I would also buy some wireless ( or maybe even wire ) thirdpart shutter release unit.
-
But, I wonder how it works...

For example the second one - JJC-JMPK-1 II,... Does the second part of unit must be placed in hot shoe, or it can be also connected with cable... to trigger the shutter.
--
I'm asking this because I photograph products sometimes, and often I have mounted in my hot shoe radio flash trigger, so it would be ideal - that wi-fi shutter release unit can be connected with cable to the camera

my NEW KP IS ARRIVED - FIRST IMPRESSIONS

So,

Let's go.

There is no so obvoius difference in body when you just look the K-3, or KP, standing one by another, but there is a huge difference when you hold KP, versus K-3.

KP is much more comfortable to play with it, in one hand, flipping it around. Heaviness from K-3 is gone for good. The main reason I bought the KP is this - and I'm happy, with the feel.

I instantly put Sigma 17-50 mm, and later 17-70 mm - just to notice, there is no much improvement in handling, when you have such heavy zoom lens. Both my Sigma are pretty big, and heavy,
and on K-3 with larger more massive grip, they have more natural feel,
but yet - on KP they feel also good,
with no special problems to hold the combo in one hand.

--
I find the MENU straight forward, and easy to understand, because it's very similar to K-3 menu.

Also,
I found the sweet little bug in it.

There is shortcut to the Menu Functions, when you press INFO, we all know that . The bug is when you press Shadow Correction, from MENU, or from INFO shortcut.
One does not change the ( at least displayed) state of another.

--
So, if I completely shut off, the Shadow Correction from MENU, it still displayed ( like it's still turning on ) in INFO MENU. The situation is confusing, so you don't know - is it On, or Off.

--
Quick zOOM after taking picture, in 1 sec preview mode, is not possible, like in K-3, and you have to press PLAY button instead, to take short observation on sharpness, and etc...
--
In K-3 is not possible to put the camera in Strict Live View mode, every time when I wanted to shoot from screen mode, I had to press LV button, to enter that mode. It was frustrating, because in many occasions, I shoot from that mode, specially in driving, when I take the picture from vehicle.

WELL, THAT'S CHANGED IN KP.
KP have LV, Video, and Viewfinder mode separated all the time, so when you leave the camera in one of this modes, and turn it off - next time, when you turned it ON, it would be again in that mode.

If you turn it off,

in Live View mode, it will be in Live View again, when you turned it on, next time. Finally !
--
I tried to put additional grips, to feel them, and to see how quickly and easily I can put them on camera.

Each grip, have own imbus screw,

there is no need to put the screw out, and turn it into another grip.
Grips have Z clutch, and when you feel it's clutched, you just tighten the screw.
Screw it self have a short way, and in few turn the grip is locked well.
--
Tilt Screen
Not bad .

I can see it was the almost most missing part of my K-3, because its so easy to shoot under the level of your belly. K-3 screen have very low contrast ratio, and when you look into it - from most of the angles, picture is not good enough.

I can see same pattern in KP,

but the Tilting it Up, improve that low contrast issue a lot. The difference is huge.

--
Burst shooting.

I'm not quite impressed, but it can be done well, specially when you choose M format, instead of L, and some faster SD card.

I would love to see improved that area.
The buffer of KP is weak - but no so weak, to not the have the job done.

Levels in burts mode are

L, M, and H ( low, moderate, and high )
.
L mode is not good for nothing. I don't know the measure , but if you press and hold shutter button, there will be 2 shots per second, maybe even 1.5 per second.

M, and H mode are acceptable to use it with confidence.

Also, there is no changing that frame rates in every mode ( like in Oly cameras )
What you see is what you get.

I don't mind for that too much, it's enough for me.

--
When we're talking about burst rates - you will must turn off the skin color correction, because, the processing is very slow, and it eats up the burst result. There is literaly no burst mode at all, when some of this advanced post processing JPG modes is turned on.

--
Another lens I attached is sweet 35 mm Pentax 2.4, and wow - the result is very subtle heaviness, well balanced, so pretty to hod in hands, left or right.

--
Picture quality.

--
From reviews I read, I was 100 % sure, KP is big performer,

but yesterday, I take a couple of pics, in very low light environment,

and WOOW...
Kp just blown me away !
--
I set up my Noise Reduction, to Custom, and I choose No NOISE Reduction till 6400 ( i will turn that Off for 6400 too ) - and every ISo above, I choose lowest correction rates .

Pictures taken with 1/20, ( shake reduction On ), 6.7 aperture, and ISO 12800 are stunning !

Hole scene in my JPG have better light, than the one I can see with my eyes ! Increase in light was not give the unnatural look. Shadow correction was set to highest.

Noise - ZERO ! I can't believe how good this photos are, taken in almost NO light, with such high ISO rate.
Shake reduction is pretty good,

and certainly way better the K-3.

Other impressions I would add later, if I find something new.

the math is acceptable in terms of real life situations when you have older body to compare - like K3 ...

With the KP, it's a clear thing - the KP would be winner....

I was just trying to show, how quickly you can lose advantage of bigger sensor, because of the depth of field , when you're taking photos in concerts, because you have to choose more ISo, to compensate higher shutter speeds, and also "equialvalent" apperture.

In m43, there is a double (2x) factor, so when you choose f4, it's like you choose f8 in full frame, or f 6.7 - at APSC.

that lead to less high ISO value, and add to this slightly lower shutter speed, you can manage from your hand - and that's a full stop advantage, over tha same settings in APSC.

---

Needless to say, new sensors from SONY, is unbeatable, and yes Sony produces m43 as well, as Apsc, and FF.

So, I except alternative design, as a step further - in m43 also, like we see it right now with apsc. ----

Math of sensor sizes, and depth of field, would be again correct.

Of course, I really don't want to get me missinterpreted,

APSC has a real advantage, but yet, m43, can do some tricks, to compensate that ...

With higher and better image stabilisation solutions - apsc can really get far away, like now in KP...

---

Personally when we are tlaking about that here, I don't believe in FF sensors, and bigger, because APSC have already many advantages, and the picture quality is at least three times better, then just several years ago

KP SAFOX AF MODULE vs previous models
Posted By panonski
Replies: 29

So, the bootom line, is I'm very well awared of limitations in AF , that can be tricky in shooting.

My K3 behaviour in AF-S is very incosistent... from 10 shoots, spotted on the same AF target place - several of them would consider well focused, after that, several would be slightly out of focus - and maybe one or two in best way would have maximum sharpness...

Of course I'm talking about shooting and focusing throught the mirror - or shooting with OVF ...

Results in AF vary to much for my personal taste, and that's not a so good thing, when you have exscesive shooting of model, or more of them, and later in desktop you find out - that most of the pics, are - well - slightly out of maximum sharpness, while some of them reach that level.

---

I read in Kp official Ricoh page, that KP has a new SAFOX 11 AF module, with lower apperture pass at 2.8, vs older version which is only 5.6....

Pentax statements here are :

" SAFOX 11 New-generation AF sensor module with a high-speed algorithm

The PENTAX KP incorporates the high-performance SAFOX 11 AF sensor module in its autofocus system. This dependable module features a diffraction lens to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration and assure pinpoint focus on the subject, even under adverse conditions such as when shooting against backlight or photographing high-contrast subjects.
High-speed AF algorithm

This latest autofocus algorithm assures a faster autofocusing speed than the one used in the conventional SAFOX 11 module. It lets you react more swiftly and effortlessly to unexpected shutter chances."

Features4 | PENTAX KP | RICOH IMAGING

----

i WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOME REVIEWS FROM KP USERS HERE..., specially from ones who are still engage with older K 3 or different bodies

pixel peepers are not photographers ...

Only photo to count, is one it can show your ability to tell the story...

If the right feelings came out from your picture,
no one would try to find
how many details you save, or don't...

Pixel peepers mania is when you have PRO photo work for clients, and even then,
no one would care for
small lack of details - because they would not see that any even existed...

--
Much worse is to deliver unsharp images.

I can honestly say - shooting raw - without purpose to recover shadows vs highlights - doesn't mean anything.

I printed 40-60 cm ( 16 x 24 inch ) jpg files from my Sony Ericson with just 2 mpix, and 400 kB size - and you cannot notice lack of details....

Lack of details is visible only on screen, when you hardly zoom scroll into an image...

In that case, no one image would be looked perfect, or good.

JPEG vs RAW makes no sense, unless you do not want brilliant DR.

RAW files are just usefull for better DR - when you have pic high levels of light, and highs levels of shadows.
--
You have advantage in RAW in that scenario...
..
In plain ordinary pics, without such high contrast scenarios - jpg is more then enough. ...

I shoot only JPG all the time, and RAW just once or twice when I really need it...

Guys who shoot just RAW ? I think - they have more time and memory on hard drives :D
