So I have a DAL 55-300 and a Tokina 80-200 ATXpro and a 2x converter. I need to order a filter. Would you get a ND3.0 and shoot with the tokina/converter or a ND4.0 and shoot with the DAL? Shooting with a K50. I have only played with the converter a small amount and did not notice a stop of light difference but I'm still a beginner and was shooting pretty wide open.

Great shots. Love the third one above and just looked through the "best" shots group. Some great shots in there, love the city shot (36) with the river in the foreground. You should post it here for those who don't look through the album. Very nice work.

I usually do a couple shots before the game and set a white balance. Some shots in a sequence may be a little off (took me a couple games to realize the phase thing but the time it takes to analyze before snapping the pic is longer than the phase change to me anyway and results were about the same) but my kids gym has very bad lighting and different color casts from the different lights but the pics usually represents what I see visually pretty accurately. I've found that my nifty fifty prime is not the best I and don't use it. The reason being it's right in the middle of a good focal range. You can't get the right distance from the court to get desireable results. I don't have a fast shorter focal zoom so sometimes I use the kit 18-55 and get courtside and have to jack up the ISO more than I want to, or I use my 70-200 2.8 further back in the stands at F3.2 or F4 which I found is best for my situation but then you always have the "spectator" view which doesn't make for the best shots. I was looking to get a shorter faster zoom, but my son didn't make the team this year and my daughter decided to only cheer for football and play soccer so I get to save some money. It's definitely easier for me to shoot football, baseball and soccer than basketball. I am by far from accomplished and still learning every time I shoot, good luck.

Back Button Focus

I mainly shoot football, soccer and baseball. Actually you will find the tracking is rather bad on the K-50 and sometimes when shooting a sequence you will have a shot in the middle out of focus, it can be frustrating. I've never had it track while not pressing the button so I don't know if that is right. I have found that I shoot smaller bursts and re-focus in the middle of the action quite often now for best results. I have AF-AEL set to AF1 which means you can use the shutter button or the back button for focus with the back button over riding the shutter button to focus. (this helps when the wife grabs the camera who is used to a point and shoot, it still focuses). If something is coming at me I use the back button with AFC, this gives the best odds at being in focus, but if the action is not coming towards me I just let the shutter button control the AF.( back button is a bit cumbersome for me as I'm a left eye shooter) I've found center focus point in select mode with Expanded area AF is usually best for action. This tries the center first but will go out a little further if need be. Set this on the camera menu page 2 AF Settings. The upper end bodies have AF hold if the subject goes out of the area but the K-50 does not. The auto 5/11 misfocuses a bit more for me and single point is hard to keep on point so having a little wider area helps. Also you can play with the AFA setting which will automatically choose continuous AF or Single depending on movement in the scene. I haven't set up the U1 or U2 as I am usually on M and just adjust what I want when I want so I don't know what is saved in the different modes. It is indeed a great camera for the money, the only thing I want the K-70 for is the better position of the BBF button but that's not enough reason for me to change right now.

trying to figure out guns

If you have never shot a gun, I suggest going to the range and spend an hour or so shooting some different calibers. Most shops will have rentals where you only buy the ammo. This is not a question that can be answered, only experienced.

Low light photography?

Here's a comparison to look at to show $ value. We did senior pics of my son with a friend and I brought my camera to compare. 5D mk2 with post done by my friend who knows more than me, especially positioning and post, vs K-50 shot by me on probably some wrong settings. Mines at F3.2 his F14. They are slightly different angles and mine is jpeg out of camera with just a little exposure bump, his has some post processing done (the main reason I call him to do our photos). The shot where the sliver of sky is visible ( first shot ) is the 5D. I know these aren't low light but they are a good comparison of value the K-50 is.

Also there are two other pro's who's kids play sports with mine. After comparing their 7D M2 shots with my K-50 shots I was glad I didn't spend any more money than I did. I'm sure I have more throw-aways than them due to focus issues but picture quality wise I didn't see the extra money equal value.

edit: I have a sony video camera so I don't know how the K-50 handles video. I'll even use my nikon coolpix L820 P&S for video over the K-50 if I know I'm wanting to do video. Thinking about it, I don't think I've used the sony since I got the Nikon. Sometimes it's best to separate the equipment between video and pics.

Low light photography?

I'm usually on the side of the field and try to keep close to the action. The stadium at my kids school is new and they have the lights pretty high and close to the field so I would have to have a good distance shot to get them in there if I even could. Maybe I'll throw the 18-55 or the fast fifty and try that next year. I usually try to get one with the sun low on the horizon that blows out the scene some, but that's usually just for fun before the game. Sometimes I want to up the shutter speed to reduce all the motion, then other times I want the "action" in the shot. I don't know which is more "right", but the parents I share them with don't care either way.

Here are some ones I grabbed real quick out of my collection. K-50 with a Tokina 80-200 2.8. Clearly with these being sports I shoot a higher shutter speed and ISO than what you could get away with if it's not action. I think the exif info is there, if not I will update info. This lens get a little soft on far away subjects, but for what I do its "good enough", The camera I have no complaints, although I would like to upgrade to the K-70 for that little extra ISO performance. All shots SOOC no post, reduced size in photoscape.

Glad I came out ok on my only ebay lens purchase. Tokina Atx-pro 80-200 2.8. Description listed two blemishes on the body. When it arrived it looked brand new and took me a few minutes to find what they were calling blemishes. I would not have even mentioned them they where so small and insignificant. (one on the mount and one on the hood). Glass was perfect. I was skeptical about ordering off ebay but seller had good rep and it was the cheapest 2.8 I had come across. seller cameyoro_jp out of Japan, I would purchase again from him and not think twice.

K30 died - upgrade or repair?

Craigslist has a couple decent deals right now around here in the STL. white K-30 in union for $350, new K-50 for $500, a little high to me considering I got the two lens kit for that, or a K5 complete setup with some nice lenses for 2K that's been up for a while so a good cash offer could possibly get it. I'll quote text from add:
(5 x Pentax K (KA/KAF/KAF2) mount lenses
*100 - 300mm telephoto lens
*16 - 45mm Pentax smc DA f/4
*50-200mm Pentax smc DA f/4-5.6 ED WR
*55mm Pentax smc DA* f/1.4 SDM
*18-55mm Pentax smc DA f/3.5-5.6 AL WR

Pentax Battery Grip D-BG4
Pentax IR remote f
Pentax Flash
Carbon fiber tripod new in box with carrying bag
Original boxes, manuals, bags, covers
Backpack for carrying gear

Again I dont know if you have to have new but there are other options. Good luck in your search.

upgrade to k-70 from the k-50?

I would love to see some side by side pic comparisons of high ISO. Love my K-50 but I shoot sports for my kids teams and post them for all the parents. NOBODY complains about my pics but I am my biggest critic and when at some schools with not so good lighting I'm cranking up ISO to 5000 and dropping to 2.8 and I dont like the way that looks. I get bad CA with my Tokina 70-200 at 2.8 under the lights where I need it. At our home stadium i can shoot F4,1600, 1/250 and they turn out great. If I could get similar grain out of a K70 around 5000 ISO I would consider upgrading sooner rather than later. However my oldest boys football playing is over (senior year) and I have two years till my youngest is at the high school so I can wait a little before upgrading. The rest I shoot is all day games so no problem there. I can wait for prices do drop a little. Hopefully I can see some side by side shots before I upgrade to see if it's worth it to me.

If you figure this out I would love it. I shoot kids sports and will often have it focus on the background rather than the subject, more so at longer distances. The annoying thing is when shooting a sequence and the middle picture in the sequence is focused on the background where the others are correct. I figured it was just my inexperience. I've tried all the focus modes and points. I've even tried changing the focus point to the very bottom and focus on the ground right in front of them. This works ok on med distance fotos but not long distance. (I shoot on the field from the sidelines.) I've started to not shoot as many sequences with the button held down and instead re-hit the button multiple times to sequence the shot. This causes it to redetermine the focal point, so instead of having the whole sequence out of focus from it tracking the wrong point, I might only get 25% oof. I knew going in I wasn't getting the best sports camera so I just live with the results and shoot extra shots to be able to throw away some. Shooting a stationary target though I usually don't have a big problem and don't notice it much, but I rarely shoot that. I shoot the K50 with the DAL 55-300 in the daylight and tokina 80-200 2.8 at night. (The tokina seems to back-focus more at long distances even on stationary targets) If the new PLM lens would work on a K50 I would upgrade to it just to try it out. (Talking to you pentax!)

They sell some wipes in the automotive department usually some orange scent or something. Bucket of scrubs is what mine calls them. I do auto glass and this is the only thing that cleans up the glue I use. If there is something around the house that need scrubbed, it is the first thing I grab. They work awesome. I've seen them in walmart. Made for cleaning hands so no gloves needed. Here's amazon link. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BYE9RK/ref=s9_dcacsd_bhz_bw_c_x_1
