K20D vs D700?

I tend to disagree. While D700 may be a BMW, no way K20D is a Corolla.

I have both and enjoy both, most of the time and get upset by both sometimes. Pentax focusing, FF, BF you name it but then there is Nikon and it's silly AWB. Then comes D700 and its speed, great focusing screen versus Pentax and its so intuitive handling. Pentax underexposing versus Nikon overexposing...

I don't mention fps as that is of no importance for me as well as I don't mention D700 high ISO as it is a well known thing.

On the ISO... I'd love if D700 was native ISO 100. But, you can't have it all...

It would be great if things were as simple as most Pentax and/or Nikon fanboys make it. But it is not. At this point of digital technology available to public, both are really very capable cameras.

I guess anyone claiming otherwise would probably do better with D40 or whatever Pentax entry camera is.

Oh, there is one small thing to keep in mind: K20D with DA*55, 4 limited DA lenses, 540 Flash, batteries and other small things fit in a tiny Hama/Samsonite backpack while Nikon and few lenses call for something like Crumpler Daily 600. Not that Pentax does not get heavy after whole day of carrying it but it is much, much lighter and smaller than D700. Not as small as Leica D-Lux3, though.;)

All in all, I was hoping the differences between the two would be bigger but one has to try a really great camera like D700 to realize how good K20 is. And K10. too!

Enjoy DA*55.
I am having trouble taking it off the camera since I got it... My Limiteds feel kind of abandoned since I got DA*55.
Your "strategic" thinking indicates you are well resisting LBA and that you will be fine with your three lens set.

Any K20D Aperture users upgrade to firmware 1.03?

This problem was existing at the time when Pentax released 1.01 firmware but this was fixed by OSX update couple of weeks after that. Aperture and K20 have worked together fine since then, including the most recent Aperture update and 1.03 firmware.

K20D Tethering Options

Similar to tether options with Lightroom and Phase One, only with Aperture you need one additional step - you need to setup Aperture Hot Folder (look at: Automator Workflows: Hot-Folder Import).

It is rather slow, but works. Not that Lightroom or Phase One are any faster. :(

Downgrading Firmware on K20D

While I cannot confirm if this is the only change in the firmware, I can confirm that what makes problem for K20D 1.01 PEF files to be recognized by Apple OSX (iPhoto and Aperture), Bibble and C1 is header information:

Firmware 1.0: PENTAX Corporation .PENTAX K20D
Firmware 1.01: PENTAX .PENTAX K20D

I have tried to replace the header with hex editor and after the change it instantly becomes readable by both Aperture 2.1 and C1 4.1. Btw, it is a complete pain in the neck to replace headers in each and every PEF manually! I did it out of curiosity, not masochism...:D

Since problem never existed with Lightroom, I suspect that Adobe checks for camera model, not manufacturer.

While I can understand the legal logic behind this move in Pentax (it is only a brand, not corporation anymore), the sneaky way it was implemented is ridiculous. How many important RAW or DAM software is out there? Not many and a simple informational e-mail to all of them BEFORE the fact could have saved some (much?) trouble to some (many?) Pentax users.

Hey Pentax, it is your flagship product you treat as an orphan and it is your customers you just fail to respect.

You don't need 16MB card, card used just has to have more than 16MB free space available.
