Poll: Why did you buy a Pentax DSLR?

Ability to use legendary Pentax optics such as the old Taks and Super Taks

Build quality

I now own both a K100 and a K20, but when I bought the K100 I really wanted to learn about SLR photography and the cost of lenses for C & N and a new lens mount ( no back compatibility! ) with every new body ( not really but nothing like Pentax ) really bothered me....I know it sounds a little hippie, but I think there is an abundance of good karma in the Pentax brand and I like the way they respect the people who buy their products.

Bottom line though is image quality, when they're at their best I'd put the IQ from my bodies up against almost anything else. ( My composition may leave a little to be desired but the cameras are sweet )

K 100 D, purchase Oct 2006............... 20492 actuations
K 20 D purchased May 2008................6860 actuations

An average of almost 30 images per day for two and one half years! There have sadly been some days that bring that average down!

I can't believe how disappointed I am at the totals! The last six months have been tied up with new job, house hunting and getting ready to sell and move....

......I know which box I'll be unpacking first........

.......who am I kidding, my camera bag(s) will be riding shotgun with me when I drive away, like I'm gonna trust the movers!!.......or my wife!!

30,000 here I come

I found a Super-Takumar M42 screwmount lens...worth getting an adapter for K100d?

The 'genuine Pentax' m42 screwmount to 'K' mount adaptor is the best $25 in kit I own I believe.......with the possible exception of the Vivitar m42 f2.8 135mm prime that I got for free when I bought a Super Tak 200mm m42 prime for $40!!! Pawnshops and garage sales have new found interest when you get this adaptor.

No autofocus, no AE, but you can set aperture and press the green button to meter and set shutter speed as a good starting off point. Most have silky smooth focus rings, Super Taks have a 'long throw' in the focus ring, which is a pain sometimes, but provides crisp accurate focus with a very little practice. You can still use SR, with the camera prompting you to input the focal length of all manual lenses you might want to check the firmware of the unit you purchased, as I think the original firmware with mine, did NOT record the lens focal length in the exif data, there was a firmware update that corrected this which you should be able to find.

Its always amazing to me ( and still the number one reason I shoot Pentax DSLR's....god bless backward compatibility!! ) that these lenses that are 30/40 and 50 years old produce such phenomenal images. Designed with slide rules and pencil and paper, not supercomputers, and they consistently produce !!!

That m42 adaptor will cause a sudden and violent outbreak of LBA.......good news is there are tens of millions of lenses out there to choose from.

Happy garage sale hunting!

Sick of AF complaints

Hey are aware that this is a ( wait for it ).....PENTAX forum.

Just wanted to give you the heads case you hadn't figured it out have a pretty unpopular opinion here?

My advice would be that if all the 'whining' and talk of AF is making you sick, don't come back.

This forum is an open exchange of ideas and knowledge and photographs for PENTAX users. Saying that there is no justification in loving our BELOVED equipment is like telling my 7 year old daughters soccer team that you forgot the snack.........people are going to be upset...........and their going to tell you about it.

I'd try to add value here rather than stir up this kind of crap.

This concludes my rant.

IMHO I take much more 'from' this forum than I could begin to offer to it at this point in my photographic journey.........Ansel Adams I ain't!

Posting a lens review that make make some poor weak ( LBA ) soul part with $700 of his or her hard earned money because of my review should be as concerning for you as it is for me!:)

Having said that, the Sigma 10-20 I've found to be an amazing lens. Very good IQ, Breathtaking FOV at 10mm!! Some distortion at the edges but I believe to be expected at 10mm. Colour is very nice too. Built like a tank, nice lens hood, padded zipper case......most money I've spent on a lens......or a filter for that matter, I think the Sigma UV 77mm filter I bought was another $100!

I don't think that I've even begun to leverage everything that this lens has to offer yet, a good one to grow old together wife too!

I've given you ever opportunity to NOT take my advice, but I'd buy it again tomorrow.

Pentax 'Pre-set' aperture question

I'm wondering if anyone can explain the 'dual aperture rings' of a Pentax Tele-Takumar 300mm lens that I own.

I understand aperture, just not how the two rings work together. I recently had a chance to buy another similar lens, but haven't yet.

Any help would be appreciated.

That's awesome Buddha!!!

Just saw this thread and had to add that I too have had some luck "making Pentaxians" !!!

Four so far and won't be long before I spend some of the ( other ) brother-in-law's money! They where totally film till about 1 1/2 years ago! I made them into digital converts by simply showing them that the pure volume of photos they will take digitally will result in more 'keepers'.......little did they know my devious plan to use my K20D to show them the limitations of their 'okay' Sony superzoom!

Three work colleagues and the other brother-in-law. Just show them the camera and its about the backwards compatibility and the pure fun of using a 40 year old lens bought on ebay for $120 ( Vivitar Series I 70-210 Kiron version ) and how much the SR version of that lens from Canikons and poof! they're SOLD......K200's all four.......All four loving it and sending me tons of pics......two now using Lightroom and REALLY having fun!

I actually went to the camera shop with two of them and was amazed at the ".....well yes Pentax does make nice cameras......BUT.......just look at this Canon/Nikon/Sony...." line each time from several different sales people. The power of incentive commissions!

Only one problem......I used my K100D ( not super ) to close the deal with all four......handled the K20D on every outing.......when the fourth covert showed me some rather amzing shots from the K200D, I went out at lunch that day and bought the K20!!!......bought the Sigma 10-20 the next day!

I need to be protected from myself and others I think.

Viva Pentax!!

Just a thought, but its probably pretty cold in Sweden this time of year.......any chance this is just condensation from going back and forth from warm apartment to cold balcony and caused a little fog?

I'd say if not condensation then I'd try the same test, in the same way ( temp/time outside and inside ) with the K100 too and see if you get the same result, if yes then its lens/fog/condensation...........if no then as others have said likely AA filter or sensor require cleaning.

I'd let someone else clean either the filter or the sensor rather than try myself......

Good luck,

Good to hear!! I've posted before my nearly three months of frustration with focus adjustment on ALL of my lenses ( thought all my nice photos with my k100d where beginers luck......and that I had wasted $1200 on the K20d ) finally sucked up my pride and went back to Henry's the guy at the counter ( knew me, but wasn't the kid I bought my camera from ) took five pictures with my 50 f1.4 on my body and the display counter body......said "wow there's a serious calibration problem here..." twenty minutes later I was walking out the door with a new body and great appreciation for HENRY'S!!

Try that at Best Buy or some fly by night FleaBay dealer THREE MONTHS after purchase ( I'll bet I had 4000 + accutations on that body ) Can't say enough about the service level and knowledge they have in their only knock is that ALL the sales people are in bed with Canon/Nikon/Sony but if you speak Pentax, they are able to step down from the ivory tower to talk your language!

Henry's has a great online program and flyer too for all of you not fortunate enough to live in the great white north! lets see some pics!!

K100D or K100D super..........if you can find someone willing to part with time right after a big Pentax announcement........the LBA kicks in and anything is possible.

Great shoot from the hip no muss no fuss camera.

Makes me really think hard about bringing the K20 out!

I'm with Allison.....I use the EF500 super and it has tilt and swivel and triggers wirelessly, works great...probably pick one up for less than $200.

On the zoom, I don't own the 16-45, but many posts on this forum suggest it kicks ass if you get a good copy......though seems much less talk lately of 'bad copies' of this lens. It strikes me that there is a nice Sigma in this range too. I'm pretty pleased with the Sigma gear I own.....especially the 10-20, wow what a FOV!

Wow.....gotta love the passion of a Pentax owner. I love the threads that go on forever.

On the original thread topic, many have said it already...........bottom line is both cameras ( in the right hands ) will take spectacular question. But there are three compelling reasons to choose Pentax.

1. Build quality is unmatched in the same price range vs Nikon/Canon/Oly
2. IS ( Image Stabilization/Shake Reduction ) for EVERY LENS YOU EVER OWN.
3. Glass..........take some shots with an m42 50 super tak thats 40 years old plus/looks like its been through the wars/weighs a pound ( okay not quite ) that you bought at a pawn shop for $15.........then print that image and celebrate the backwards compatibility wonder that is Pentax.........did I mention that the same 40 year old super tak will be IMAGE STABILIZED!! When I bought my K100 a couple years back, I remember a speaker at one of the forums presented at the show I was attending saying ".....bodies come and go, but glass is forever..." and I thought yeah right ( as I'm about to spend a $1000 on a camera !! ) Now I have the LBA monkey on my back and its because the glass is SOOOO good!

Okay, almost done.

Not that I would buy any of my gear at Best Buy or Walmart ( I shop at both....cherry pick the best deals mostly.....but I really like to talk to the camera guys at the Henry's stores I shop at here in Ontario........might be a really good option for others Henry's - Canada's Digital Camera Centre - Photo Video Digital they sell in the US and on fleabay too and very reputable seller up here ), but Best Buy actually does sell Pentax gear here in Canada, and I'd walk to NYC to pick up my 31 ltd if I thought my wife would let me spend the $$.

Okay, I'm done.

K20D Focus problem

Sadly not what you want to hear, but I had my original K20 replaced by Henry's ( here in Canada ) with about 2 days to spare on their over the counter exchange policy limit.

The only time my LBA has ever served me well.

I had the same issue, real trouble with crisp sharp focus, on pretty much every lens ( some + AF adjustment some - ) most right to the max adjustment capable.

I took it back, hoping that it wasn't operator error ( and that I really was a decent photographer as my K100 suggested ! ) and three test shots with my body and the store's display model with my FA 50 1.4 and voila, new body, new warranty and an apology.

Now all is good in my K20 world............except that I have no time to use it...........or post pictures ( which makes sense, cause I'm not taking many ) or post on the only forum in all of gods internet that I really care about.

Hope this helps.

K20D or Damit Dave wtf haha

Hey Dave.........I didn't notice if anyone else mentioned it or not, but only a couple of weeks to 'play' with your new toy if you do pull the trigger might make for a less than satisfactory experience with what is a phenomenal camera.

I would probably be divorced at the end of a vacation that I spent with my nose in my new camera's user manual ( not at all suggesting that you would need to.....I've seen some of your shots, and read many of your posts........clearly you know of what you speak.......and shoot!! ). My point is for me I would be less instinctive or spontaneous perhaps if I only had a short time to learn the nuances of new beast. I'd be hung up on trying all the features and it would ( again no disrespect intended ) take away from my photography.

Having said all that I bought my K20 at full pop two or three months after it came out......just because.............and this wont help you...........I LOVE IT!

Buy a new lens you've had your eye on forever and pull the trigger on the K20, right after the K30 comes out. That way you'll have the istD and the K10 and the K20 'round your neck when your out shooting. How cool will that look!

Sorry for being absolutely no help at all.

K20d. Too high resolution?

A couple of people have suggested that the K20 appears softer( focus )with certain lenses..........I'm not sure that makes sense?

Are they using the AF adjustment feature to 'fine tune' each individual lens......I found that 2/3 of my lenses required AF adjustment ( not all the same +/- adjustment value either ) and now are VERY sharp and don't require additional stopping down vs my K100.

Not sure if I buy the 'lenses aren't good enough for 14.6MP sensor' argument.

Maybe I got totally suckered in but has anyone seen the Sigma filter demo piece in the stores.

This has a UV filter with good/better/best Sigma glass in it and a penny underneath?

It was pretty compelling, as the Sigma glass looked like it wasn't there.......would be curious to know if this is a carnival trick or a real indication of how good the Sigma glass is.

It seems that the 77mm version for my Sigma 10-20 cost around 80bucks!!

Any thoughts?

I tend to cram my bag pretty full and have experienced the same issue a couple of times before.....but also found my K20 to be on (still) and have lots of juice left a couple of times.

I wonder if one of the shutter release buttons had a little pressure on it in the bag? In my case if I put the camera in the bag, with the battery grip on it and both switches turned on, I can easily see how the battery grip shutter release could have constant pressure on it while inside the bag...........especially after my wife 'puts it away' in a closet or cabinet!

Just a thought
