It can be a long embarrassing climb [emoji1787]. I was lucky and a friend brought mine down when it happened to me.

I think mine is replaceable by removing the back but certainly not as easy as my deceased 10 year old one.

Pentax Aperture Black Picture Problem Class Action Lawsuit

We don't know what the acceptance criteria were. If there was a drawing specifying a PTFE former then they probably shouldn't have passed. I suspect the inspection involved checking the part number and taking the suppliers word that the performance of the changed part would be the same as the original. I wouldn't be surprised if the only testing done was to try the new part in the flash circuit of some cameras for a while and when that seemed to work they used them in the aperture block.
A company I worked for used thousands of tapewound iron cores and the specification drawings specified a minimum weight as well as physical dimensions. The inspection used to include weighing the cores and rejecting any light ones but after a period with no failures some bright spark decided to stop weighing the cores. You can guess what happened next, lots of humming transformers.
The acceptance criteria have to be fit for purpose. If they allow "faulty" components through then they aren't.

I actually did report a few of the listings on that account. Maybe others did as well.

Hmm the lens is in Chicago and the seller is in Netherlands.
All of the seller's feedback is for sales of stamps.

In the UK the Sale of Goods act allows a claim to be made for faulty goods for 6 years even without an extended warranty.

Exactly. If a salesman actively tries to sell you something it definitely isn't in your best interests. The only time I bought an extended warranty was on a Fridge-Freezer when the shop offered me a discount on the item if I bought the warranty and the discount was a high proportion of the warranty cost. I guess in that case everyone was a winner.

This seems to address the issue with GIMP.
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/2083
It seems to imply that if rawtherapee is installed then GIMP will be able to open DNG files.

No idea why Gimp doesn't work but you could take the memory card out of the camera and use the card reader of your laptop.

Well the problem referred to in that thread was nothing to do with cleaning the contacts. In the first post you mention that being a previous issue. The issue in that thread was dark images and although a battery issue was suspected there was no conclusion.

Not a camera battery but I have a Squeezebox network music streaming system and one of the devices is a controller with a Lithium battery. I changed the battery when I realised that the old one had swelled enough to actually crack the slide on battery housing cover. The crack is barely visible with a new battery fitted.

I have heard of it happening just didn't realise it would be recommended. I suppose it gives some dental immunity to deep fried Mars Bars [emoji3].
