Pentax K20D vs Olympus E-P1 vs Canon G9

you are right about these choices --- however I have already made up my mind -- it is the X1 ( I am on a waiting list, whatever that means ) for one reason only. It is the interface on the X1 that is killer - two controls on top, one for shutter and one for aperture. Oh and a 35mm equivalent doesn't hurt at all either.

well said indeed --- just look at all of the latest introductions of APS stuff this year from alot of different manufacturers. Sorry to say this to the folks who feel that APS-C is going to die out, I just don't believe it anymore. There is already a very large established customer base who have APS-C equipment and the camera companies are selling alot more of the APS-C stuff than the FF stuff. So it is in their best interests to keep the APS side going.

i agree --- if it has good IQ then I may have to get on a waiting list. Just this past weekend I was checking out the Oly EP1 and the specs on the new Panasonic micro 4/3, now along comes the X1. And boy does it look nice in the promo shots, except for the price tag ( ouch )

Yesterday I was poking around inside of the Lightroom Program Folder ( windows xp ) and I could not find a file with that name. Do you know which folder it goes in?
I am running Photoshop CS ( the version 1 if you will of CS ) and I think i know where it goes inside of PS ( maybe not ), but ACR 5.5 will only work for CS4 from what I understand.

thank you for explaining this to me
so if ACR 5.5 is not "official" yet is there a way to load that into Lightroom 2.4?

I have LR v2.4 and how can you check which version of ACR is installed?

I do know that ACR 5.5 only works with Photoshop CS4 which I do not own. I am still on CS1.

And while we are on this subject doesn't LR automatically with it's updater download the latest versions?

Also does LR really need the ACR v5.4 or 5.5 isn't the ACR part "built" into the LR program??

Sorry for all of the questions but I have not really used RAW software for a couple of years ( up until I quit doing product work ) but now I have 3 portrait's coming up and I need to get back into the workflow issues.

well I shot a portrait a couple of weeks ago in DNG and JPG with the K7 and all of the skin tones look very oversaturated in Lightroom and I am trying to figure out why.
Let me ask you guys this -- if by chance I accidently had the JPG color to "bright" instead of "normal" would that influence the RAW file?? And if it was setto vivid or bright ( I forget the exact word ) should I go try the Pentax software raw conversion that came with the camera to cancel out the color setting?? My past experience has been with Canon and the pentax raw files are somewhat new to me.

thank you

I got tell you I have not noticed shutter lag at all with my K7 --- unless you are shooting in continuous drive mode with lens correction turned on.

just a thought regarding sRGB

yes you are correct ---- however that is a process that has gone nowhere in 15 years --- sorry hexachrome as much as pantone used to promote it is a dead end as far as I am concerned. If fact I really do not hear anything about this process at all anymore. The only variety on this theme that I have seen lately is from Canon on some of their inkjet printers that introduced green as one of the printer ink colors which actually makes alot of sense. I agree that hexachorne was a good idea -- it just never took off. It was introduced during a time period that most commercial printing presses were only printing with 4 units ( cmyk ) and not the 6 units that are necessary for the hexachrome process. Not to mention now with all of the desktop software out there for graphics very few if any support 6c hexachrome let alone all of the RIPS that probably don"t support it.

Years ago when I was in high school a friend of mine had a copy of Stereo Review which at the time was a nerd magazine for audiophiles. In this particular issue ( mid 1970's ) was an article about some super sound technician and all of his fancy equipment for mixing etc. At the end of the article the author noticed a small 6x9 coaxial speaker on the wall and he asked what that was for with all of this state of art stuff around the studio. The answer was "at the end of the day everything I do must sound good on a mono 6x9 coaxial speaker".

Now with all these photo folks and the color space issues, profiling papers and tweeking until their hearts content ---- at the end of day it still has to look good on an sRGB windows laptop ( this is the defacto standard whether you guys like it or not ).

So the question is who really cares ???

Case in point Tiffanys Jewelry, Victoria's Secret, etc.... of course they want great product photos and they get them with great equipment and the best photographers but after all of the fancy print media has been printed ( I am a commercial printer by the way ) which reaches some of their clients but not all, the images are then put on the website for all to see and guess what that color space is?

I may add that even in the world of commercial printing ( like the forementioned catalogs ) we are limited to cmyk color space ( the nature of the beast -- if you will ) and this is an even smaller color space than sRGB.

I did the same thing on the web site and nothing. Then i called the Pentax USA 800 number and spoke to a rep who informed that to get the additional 2 years warranty on the K7 you have to fax them the original invoice and then they will mail you an extended warranty card. I faxed the info in and hopefully in the next few weeks the extended warranty card will show up. I do not know the fax number off the top of my head, just call them.

No --go ahead and abandon Pentax for Sony it does not matter to me
I will not be considering Sony DSLR's because of past experience with their consumer/computer products ( my opinion of course )

if I may add this ---- I have owned alot of photo lenses over the years ( 35 plus ) and there is only one lense that I ever regretted selling ( DA 50-135mm star ) and I am talking about alot of different lenses in that time period that I have owned. Consequently after selling my 50-135 DA last year I purchased a new one this month. this is the first time EVER that I re-purchased a particular lens. What does this mean --- you decide for yourself, but for me it signals the pentax glass is very good indeed. Full frame or not, i think my pentax equipment is very good indeed and for me it works

i actually have no problem at all with the k7 and the limited line of DA lenses

you know I was thinking about this ---- Sony can price beat Canon and Nikon on the consumer end ( cheap DSLR's ) with a price loser product but I see Pentax becoming more of a boutique type company with high end primes, kick butt optics and only appealing to people to who know what quality really is ( ie Limited Primes which nikon, canon, or sony do not really have ) because if you are an experienced photographer you have already heard of pentax. What pentax needs to do is get the word better than they have been for the last couple of years to photographers who know what real quality is and not the mass market of Nikon Canon and now apparently Sony
