best pixel peeper lens

I find that pictures uploaded via the PF forums are always super soft, probably due to compression and such. Rather try flickr.
Could it be that the RAW files have different sharpening applied straight out the camera ?

And that FoV of 18mm on fullframe would be equal to about 12mm on APSC, so nothing lost there ;)

+1 for the 21mm. Focal length-wise its similar to Smartphone cameras, which i think is very suitable for most applications. It is my most used lens. I would recommend getting the green ring-version. its cheaper on ebay (~300 eur) and gives you great looking starbursts

I find that sigma lenses (the older models) tend to look like they have had extra clarity added via PP.
Thus I am voting Sigma = Y
What I find interesting is that people look at the pictures, trying to discern which picture they find most appealing. Then take that as a reference as to what lens must be Pentax.

How did you achieve that the faces and bodies facing away from the light/flash were still illuminated? Also how did you manage to have the sky filled with blue tones and clouds or is that photoshop ? Especially the first picture is just outstanding!!

since OP didnt state any budget the 70-200 surely is the perfect choice, depending on the needs it maybe a little bit overkill tho.
I would rather recommend the 60-250 f4 , it is lighter and cheaper. depending on your budget and since you are shooting crop, the 50-300 WR is no slouch either.

DPReview: Pentax K-70 added to studio test scene

very interesting indeed, it seems their goal with the K-70 was to reduce false color noise and they surely achieved that!
at ISO 6400 and 12800 raw color noise in the K-70 is much better handled than with the K-3II and even the K-50 which shares the same sensor with the K-5. Below ISO 3200 the difference is still there but becomes less of an issue.
Still shooting a K-5, i cant help but wonder if there happened something in the algorithm, im never feeling comfortable to go above ISO 1600, as my pictures turn out very blotchy, with lots of wrong color noise, etc.. but here it even seems viable to go as high as ISO 6400 without any major issues...
from what i gathered here on the forums the K-5 is supposed to better the K3 series in low light, but to me it seems the 24mp sensor just gives and edge in detail retention, albeit with slight higher luminance noise per pixel (color noise seems to be becoming a nonissue with the k70 now :) ), but since pixels are smaller anyways it doesnt seem to matter so much. Is this correct?

K5IIs Live View manual focusing, slightly off in low light (recently)

so does this only happen when manual focusing using LV or also through the viewfinder?
using auto focus its spot on then i presume? both during LV and through the viewfinder?

have you been trying to use catch-in-focus? how about focus peaking? the K5II series supports that feature, no?
have you tried experimenting with AF fine adjustments?

My Three Lens Kit - K3 2

On my old K5:

the 21 ltd ! my all purpose walkaround lens. its perfect for me really

the DA* 16-50/2.8 im still not sure whether i like this lens enough to keep it or not, got it for a steal basically, but its heavy and the IQ is not always there when i want it (mostly due to focusing errors, but i suspect a slight decentering on the left side)

the M50/1.7 its MF, however its my sharpest lens. i love it!

the K85/1.8 for portraits its just invaluable! i just wish i had the funds for the 77mm ltd. but the K85 just has that special rendering.

lastly my FA 35-80mm its just a plastic fantastic lens, but the colors it delivers are just so good.

Sorry for breaking the rules a little bit here, but this will also be the kit im taking to a friends wedding for some casual snaps, hope i got everything coverd :)

the in camera noise reduction is for JPEGS only if im not mistaken (i dont have a k1, only the K5)..

i guess what they mean is the raw file straight from the camera is showing all the noise there is, without any level of NR, whereas the competition dials in some NR prior to any user-made adjustments.

see above, however this test measures the noise, not the resolution which remains excellent even at very high ISOs! the high iso resolution was measured in the same review, take a look ;)

They say and i quote:
"Noise control isn’t the K-1’s strongest suit, though that’s mostly because of the default settings used in RAW conversion. The K-1 earned a Low or better rating for noise up to ISO 400 and reached an Unacceptable rating at ISO 3200 and above. With judicious use of noise reduction in your own file conversions, you might find ISO 6400 or ISO 12,800 acceptable."

so its just the raw conversion's initial default setting, meaning other brands perform some level of noise reduction on the raw files.

Two new lenses

what nobody explained yet, is that the camera in the second two shots overexposed, thus the flare that you see as "blue haze" just set exposure compensation to -0.7 or similar and you will be fine.

about the filters, usually i keep them on to protect the front element, when walking around and/or being on the move to somewhere. however for critical shots i suggest to remove it.

Apsc, full frame, and medium format differences?

night cityscape-photography would be something i would love to see, handling of highlights, detail retention, graduation form dark to lit areas etc..

also subject isolation on a portrait kind of shoot would be nice to see: is medium format able to achieve full body shots with very sudden change from in focus to out of focus areas? such as a model on a street where everything just behind her would melt into OOF creaminess?

K1 pixel shift question

thats incorrect.

4 x 1/250 = 4/250 = 1/(250/4) ~1/60

however the camera seems to be restricted by a certain (perhaps artificial) limit of its e-shutter. i guess 1/25 or 1/30 comes very close to what is actually the PS speed the camera operates at (~4fps). Perhaps it may also be the processor or the buffer-capacity or rate of buffer-clearing.

FF wide angle?

Of course my opinion is only based on heresay and pictures ive seen on flickr etc, but the K18 seems to be quite a good performer actually, also on FF in the K-1 picture thread there was a post

SMC Pentax 18mm F3.5 Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

have a look at the 24mm versions:
SMC Pentax 24mm F3.5 Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

SMC Pentax 24mm F2.8 Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

but of course, the A/ FA 20mm seems to be a great lens too. perhaps have a look also at the FA 20-35mm f4, F 24-50mm F4 and F 17-28mm fisheye.
I think in the end it comes down to personal preferences, i dont like the 'look' of the samyang lenses, but that is just me. i think its a little early to judge all these lenses as there arent so many pictures showing its quality on a FF, but time will tell :)

if i am not mistaken, in terms of DOF APSC and FF are just 1 stop apart ?!
between f2.8 and f1.4 there are two stops, therefore it would have been more accurate to shoot the FF 50mm at f2 instead 2.8. but this is just nitpicking. very interesting to see the results of a comparison between K-5 and K-1, thank you :)

DPR Pixel Shift Comparison
Posted By quh86

hey guys, judging by the commentary it looks DPR has updated the K-1 shots, of course without any further announcement from DPR themselves, they wouldnt admit their tests were faulty, would they..

anyways, this comment by left eye i found very interesting. Can somebody else confirm this perhaps? :)

Ok, the K1 RAW's have been updated.
So I've redeveloped them, and in comparison to the D810, the K1 is stunning!

Tried 100 ISO and 800 ISO.
Shadows +14 (all other settings centred)
Sharpness, 40% 1pix, Detail 50, Colour Noise 10 (all other settings centred, no luminance noise reduction etc)

The amazing part is the very very very low noise of the K1 (I'm comparing the 800 ISO). Yes the D810 looks sharper (and many suspect this is the lens), but as another poster here raised the D810 RAWs look like they have extra 'in-camera' sharpening applied [there's no such thing as totally RAW, on-chip electronics lend they 'magic'] - you can see more of a contrast bounce around sharp edges of D810 RAWs that you might expect. Anyway if you increase the ACR sharpness of the K1 RAWs, Sharpness, 65% 1pix, Detail 60, in terms of detail its then a match for the D810 but still with much much lower noise! + lower than the A7RII !

Good job Pentax, you've certainly fine-tuned that sensor.

As posted here, the FA-77 which the test was shot with was decentered or faulty. The picture indeed looks like it was shot through some kind of milky or hazy glas. Thats why their staff has a new copy on the way, to redo the testing. however i believe it would be better to shoot this picture with the 100mm macro..

haha is that really the case? I mean the nikon file looks nothing short of stunning and i was really wowed by the resolution and color accuracy. However also with the image resource test, i kind of have to admit that i like the d810 shot better at pixel level, but then of course i havent really downloaded the files and havent had any real look at those myself. Im pretty sure Adam will do an extensive testing with those two cameras side by side :)

DPR Pixel Shift Comparison

Hey guys,

DPR just posted their first studio test of PixelShift resolution ... and its flawed. It seems they have used a faulty FA 77mm, because the corners look awful compared to the nikon shot, and generally the picture is not very sharp. One of their staff, Barney Britton, wrote: "And yes - we need another sample. And there's one on the way."

Welcome :)

to make it short, you cant really go wrong with either option that has been presented here.
also worth checking out
Pentax Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

this is perhaps the most interesting to you, lens tests on the K-1 :)

for portrait photography you want to check out: (PF-name: Le Rolls), surely a master of the FA 77mm and can certainly show you what the FA limiteds is capable of (although he shoots the K-3)

If you are in for the used market, have a look at the FA* 85mm. a jewel in Pentax history, hard to come by but boy the images speak for themselves.

this is just out of this world!! do you mind if i asked how you achieved this? did you do something funny with your posture to have this level of steadiness?
This is close to 5(?) stops of stabilisation which i could never achieve with my K-5.

Well Done!

At what focal length was the picture taken?
I can only guess what i would do because i never tried a similar shot, but i had done a step to your farther left for the perspective and perhaps used a wider angle, to make it look as if the car was getting away from me quickly. i like the momentum the first picture conveys, but I would like a little more detail on the rims also.
