Finally picked up a K-5

Good day all. Its been a while since i have been on the forums, but i just wanted to post that I finally broke down and up graded my Pentax bag with the K-5, the other day. Henrys had a good boxing week sale on, and i had some Christmas money so i figured what the heck.
I have not really put it through its paces yet, just a few tests, but it seems like a great camera. I like the quieter shutter, IQ looks good and no apparent focus problems with the lenses i have field tested so far. its a bit smaller than i wanted but i think i can learn to live with the size. Looking forward to testing out the higher ISO features, which is what sold me on the K-5, the D700 is still way to pricy for me.:-)

Has anyone from Au ever heard of this sucky Postal delivery service?

Peter, I live North of Toronto and have had not only Canada Post, but UPS, Purolator leave those : "we tried to deliver a package to you but were not home" stickers, even when i watch the deliver guy walk up to my house, not even knock on the door and leave.
I had a Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR lens delivered from Camera Canada in 2006 and had them send it with a sig request. After 5 days of waiting i contacted CC and they said it should have been delivered and would trace it.
Later that day, i went into my garage to get something, and there on my work bench was the lens package. It had been just left there and had probably been there for 3-5 days.

Its just poor service and lazy people.

And I'm one of those two system shooters Steve. I like what the Nikons do for action and equine work and what Pentax gives me for portraits and landscapes.
I would love a D700(the D200 is my newest Nikon camera) but i have lived this long with out FF and a D300 would suffice as an upgrade. The K10D suits me fine todate.

To start with, I would suggest using the +- graphic in the view finder to set you exposures.

I find my M42 lenses underexpose by +- 1 stop. For this i compose my shot, press the green button then open up the 1 stop.

I replicated the shooting conditions on Sunday, and no eronious readings.

Looking more now like an off/on metering snag or lens and camera not talking properly.

Yes the camera was tripod mounted.

I understand about the finder letting in some light etc, but my question is why, after 45 odd years of taking photographs is it happening now,.:-)

Its a random thing, once in a while. I should have added that switching to manual metering, i get the exposure the finder wanted to give my, but was over ridden by the LCD metering.

Very odd.

Just wondering if any one has come across this.

I have notice it with the Pentax 50-200 and the Sigma 300 F2 APO with the sigma 1.4 tele.

Camera sometimes shows two different meterings for the same shot. Friday i was set up shooting some birds in my yard. I noticed the images were way underexposed, did some looking and found this.
The information in the finder, when shutter button depressed 1/2 way showed one thing and the top LCD showed something different, by quite abit.
Example, view finder showed 1/80 at F6.3 and the lcd shows 1/500 at f6.3 (in Av mode here.Camera in AV mode and manual focused.

Any ideas, dirty contacts, battery maybe.?? or metering problem. I think i took out a 2 year extra warranty through Henrys.

Dave

Oh, when looking at the photo info in camera, the info that showed on the lcd screen was what was captured.

Poll: Which printer so you use?

I did not vote, as i don't think there is a "best" printer for photographers. Some printers are better at certain things and it depends on the wants of the individual.

I used Canon printers from 2001 until 2007. The BJC 8200 and the S800. They did a good job as my carry around, onsite printers at horse shows, but i went through a lot of heads due to heat and dust.

When i went to upgrade i looked at the Epson 2400 and a Canon 9000 i think it was. I bought the Epson as it had better reviews for B&W printing and i liked what i read about the K3 inks..

Dave

PS its prints nice B&W's.

I'd like to see some pictures of some of the home made items in place. I'm having a hard time envisioning some of them, like the paper/reflector in the coat hanger things and how to clamp, position etc..

Just finished reading several quick reports from some of the PDML members that were at GFM this weekend, and managed to see the K7 and other items.
Everyone was very appreciative of the chance to have a look and a feel.

As i said earlier, picked a bad time to miss the NPW event.,:-(

Burst and the Great Sports Debate
Posted By pentkon52

I shoot equine sports, with a D2H or D1H, and rarely if ever use a burst mode. I know other equine photography companies that i compete with tell their shooters to shoot in burst, but unless you have the timing right at the first frame, all the others will not give you the jump shot you want.
I know my sport and wait for the perfect moment. It rarely fails me.

However i do find it handy in reining, for the slide stop. I tried to eye the perfect shot(the front legs have to be just so for a sale)but was always late, so i would just set the camera to 3fps and fire. Then i'd just delete, in camera the ones that are no good, while the next entrant is coming into the ring.

I think 3-4 FPS is plenty.

I heard a Pentax rep would attend this year and bring a few toys to look at.

So, it figures i have to miss this year.

Dam.

Look for the PDML lads and lasses under the Fuji blimp,, by the wash room shed.

I used to use PS 99% fro my edits. Since working with LR the past 6-10 months, i rarely use PS any more, unless for cloning and things like that.
With LR 2, i can obtain 95 % of my edit needs, and more seemlessly.

We have Trumpeter Swans at the farm we board our horses at. When i shoot them in water, i find it best at -0.3 or -0.7 EV, to avoid the burned out back high lights.

Two years to late for me. Was going to buy the 50-15 instead, but Canadian prices have gone through the roof.
Pentax Canada has lost this customer.

What do you mean cleaned and adjusted. Whats wrongs with it.??

Not sure about your area but i know the big Pentax rep is in Colorado. If its not warranty work, you'll pay.

If its a CCD cleaning, i know Nikon charges me $90 Canadian for it.

I had this problem with my K10D and my new D FA 50 f2.8. I sent in the camera and lens to Pentax Canada and two weeks later it was returned with a note that the camera and lens had been adjusted for focus.

I'm happy with the results. Now i just need to send it back to adjust the 77 and 100.

I have been disappointed with my istD and K10D, using hot shoe flashes. Very inconsistant results.
For that i much prefer my D200 and SB800.

Landscapes i usually use the K10D.
