why I won't buy a k3 (Warning: Satire Thread)

Hell, it might bring in more new buyers if it DIDN'T say Pentax on it at all. Those shopping for a first time dslr have been told by their friends with Canikon that Pentax is old school, unsexy, not updated, etc. At least with Ricoh it would be an unknown quantity and Ricoh could mount a slick advertising campaign to build brand awareness.

Anchoring your product with a brand is desirable, but when the brand itself becomes an anchor...

I like the Pentax name, but don't care if Ricoh's name is on the camera as well. Ricoh made capable camera's long before it bought Pentax.

Some of the 4/3 zooms were arguably some of the best ever made. I have an em-5 and find I prefer the output of the e-500 and e-630 I had in many ways to the Sony chip in the em-5.

Going fullframe - considerations

Yes given FF better low light advantage.

But, the smaller sensor comes out on top IF you restrict ISO to the same on both cameras and are shooting wide open in low enough light sans tripod where shutterspeed is going to determine if there is motion blur or not. It's an edge case, but one that many ff aficionados tend to miss.

I've struggled with this photo. For some of the reasons that Spooky gives. In general I don't care for street photography of the homeless because usually it's done claiming it's documentary and drawing attention to their plight. Capital B. Capital S. Everyone knows homeless exist and I'll bet no one has done thing one about it because of a photograph and one more black and white hip shot of the homeless processed with structure at 100 is not going to make anyone take action either. Probably the perpetrators of these types of photos have seen the work of real pros, think Magnum level, and think if I just shoot the same subject, I'll be the real deal too.

This photo is not what I describe above - at all. This is an excellent portrait that happens to be of a homeless person. This photograph stands on it's own merit. We don't need to know the man is homeless for it to be good. The tonality and presence is very good and makes it stand out in the gallery of submissions. While I'm not enamored with the backstory, I'm judging this photo on it's merit as a photo and I think it's quite good.

Nominated.

This does what I think is the highest order of photography. It captures a moment that will never exist in time again. That sunset will happen over the rocks tomorrow and so on, but spontaneous shots with people are something else again.

Nice and all, but I gotta believe the birth of a child is more about the moment and less about the quality it was captured with.

Parents would be just as happy with a a video from a Canon g12 I would think.

Then again, I'm not a video guy and maybe I don't get it, but the people I see at school events and what not aren't videoing their kids with anything even approaching the quality of entry level dslr video and they seem plenty happy capturing the moment that way.

This is a hot topic for some. I prefer lenses that are optically corrected and yes, I know Hblad does electronic correction. If you go to photozone and look at the wide angle primes, the FF are about the best for distortion with no correction and as you get to smaller sensors, it gets worse, in general. One standout exception to this is the original 4/3 lenses from Olympus, they were optically good.

I've gotta believe at some level optical is better and electronic correction leads to other issues.

I also want manual focus that's direct drive and not focus by wire.

C'mon Pentax make a mirrorless with nice evf that uses K mount.

Actually I did get the point. My smiley was the sarcasm smiley. I know there is a whole lot more to specs of a camera. Many on forums seem to disagree on that point.

Pentax MX-1 - Just Got Mine Today

Mine should be here by the end of this week. Ordered it a few months ago when Adorama had it on sale, but it went back ordered right away with no estimate on restock, so I cancelled. I've been mulling it over since then and found it at B&H today for a good price.

It can't hang with a big sensor for IQ in some scenes, but in the right light it will do wonderfully. I have a nice 20 inch print made off of the not so stellar Optio E60 and I'm sure this is much better than that.

Looking forward to putting it to use. I've got a project in mind that will utilize it's fast lens nicely. The Lumix LX7 might have a slightly better lens speed wise. I know if I want to shoot jpg the Pentax has nicer color to my eyes, especially sky and greenery. I have an RX100 I will sell. I just can't get past the user interface. I'll take lesser IQ for superior shooting experience in some cases and this is one of them.

From Full-Frame Sony... to Pentax... to Full-Frame Canon

I don't disagree at all that it's subjective. I do disagree with the apparent ease at with which some say they can get any color out of any camera. I see enough posts to the contrary to believe that they are the exception rather than the rule. People are criticized for not managing their WB properly. Clearly on some of the examples the cameras chose the correct WB, but that doesn't mean skin will look the same, or a tree will have the same saturation, hue, or luminance of green. Skin and the greens of the outdoors are colors we all have a strong concept of how they should look and small variances stand out in a big way. On the other colors are not such "memory" colors and differences aren't noticed as much.

My own take is that I'd rather use the camera that gets me closer to what I want right out of the camera without having to jump through hoops and do contortions to achieve it. I'd rather be shooting photos that fighting them in post.

Take a look through the forums. You'll see more complaints on Nikon skin tone than Canon skin tone. If I made a living shooting portraits, I'd start with the platform that required the least amount of post to get pleasing skin tones.

I do think some of the posters to these threads were onto something when they talked about CCD vs CMOS. I'm not saying CCD was better, just different. What also plays into it I'm sure is the sensors and processing pipelines are being optimized for high iso. I don't see anyone fighting to give us ultra clean 25 or 50 iso. Great skin tones might be a casualty of some of the hot rodding of the sensors. Just a thought.

Personally if I shot a Nikon I'd end up with a lot more black and white photos.

Canon SL 1 -- a bad idea?
Posted By RyanW

Get the SL1. As for the "this sensor is great, this sensor is crap" stuff. Look at photos taken with the cameras, not graphs and specs from DXO. The feedback I've seen on the Canon forum is that some prefer the stills and video to that of the Canon 60d which is several steps up in the food chain from the SL1. I don't think you'd like the SL1 with large lenses, but that doesn't sound like why you want it either.

At the price, I don't think there is a better value out there for a new dslr. Caveat, you can't raise shadows five stops. But then if you are having to do that regularly, something is wrong and it's not your camera.

Ricoh owns Pentax and I think it's a good buy for them, but why would Ricoh abandon what has been a successful camera for them.

I'm sure there will be more synergy in future models and more "mainstream consumer" models produced in addition to things like the GR.

While niche cameras are just that, I don't see Pentax retaking the market with more me too consumer cameras, especially since they have no marketing to scream from the highest mountain top "look, we now make what everyone else makes".

Pentax and Ricoh have the ability to design and make cameras targeted at photographers rather than gadget buyers. At least that's where I see their strength.

I wonder if the lack of wide fast primes on Pentax has to do at least with shortcomings of the AF system. In any case they could use a fast 24mm lens. If you like wide and fast, FF seems to be the easiest route. That's my reason for being in FF.
