I simply followed the PentaxUSA web site instructions and updated the 1.3 firmware to my K10D. No problems. Thank you.

If I have never updated the K10D firmware, do I have to update each release in order, or does 1.3 contain all previous updates?

HWBlanks probably got one of the 7 element 2X macro focusing extenders. They were marketed under the Vivitar, Kiron, and other names. I have one, and it is good.
The cheaper four-element tele-extenders (non macro-focusing) are the ones that give tele-extenders a bad name.
