IR conversions

Here is a thread I had started a while back with examples from the 67 lenses: Pentax 67 55mm, 120mm; TiltRokr; Infrared - PentaxForums.com

I unfortunately didnt keep the best of notes but the lenses I tested were the dfa 70-200 f2.8 (by far the worst performer), dfa 100mm macro 2.8 -- good at 2.8 and 4, ok at 5.6, useable at f8 not so great beyond. Dfa 28-105, lensbaby 56mm and 85mm, Zeiss zk 25 2.8 and 35 2.8 all ok at 2.8 and 4, none all that great beyond. The 67 lenses I used were the 55mm, 75mm, 100mm macro, and 120mm soft -- all were good stopped down to f16 and useable at f22. I was testing with an 850nm filter on a Sony a7rii and in between 30 and 45 degrees to the sun so pretty harsh conditions to try to elicit hotspots and see what I could get away with. Lower spectrums and other angles will increase useability range. Note that Medex who responded in the thread had better results than I did but I think they were at 640nm.

I'll check later tonight -- I think I still have the results somewhere in Lightroom. I remember the biggest disappointment being the 70-200 f2.8.

I don't have any experience with the 645 lenses but my guess would be if you have older versions of the lenses produced at the same time the 67 lenses were being produced they will do just fine -- they should have the same coatings as the 67 lenses. If you have newer versions with Pentax's recent coatings I'd think they would perform more like DFA lenses. Modern lens coatings, at least in the Pentax line, is great for regular photography but as one of their features seem to be optimized to reduce IR transmission and I think this is why the DFA lenses I've tested work so poorly.

Count me another happy Kolari customer. They did a full spectrum conversion of a Sony a7rii for me and everything went well. I would have preferred to buy a used K-1 and have that converted but Lifepixel did not offer that service and If I remember correctly Kolari also did not offer the service. There are some issues with converting Sony a7rii and also the a7riii so if you could get your K-3 done that would be the way to go.

Just an fyi also -- Pentax 67 lenses are wonderful for IR work with virtually no hotspots. DFA lenses suck once they are stopped down so if you intend to do landscape work consider looking at some of the 67 lenses which can be had relatively cheaply.

I'll vote b&w also -- the pen really pops in b&w and gets a little muddled in the color version. Great shot here and the ones in the Zeiss thread also!

Wonderful shot and nice pose. The lighting doesnt seem as even as in your other shots -- the shadows on neck and face seem just a ltitle to dark. Thanks for posting again!

What lenses for 4x5 ?

This is going to sound strange but if you are going to be loading your own film try to keep your fingernail on the finger next to your thumb or your middle finger a little longer than normal -- this will help you to slip your nail under the top of the film to grasp only the very top when loading and unloading. You'll see what I mean when you try loading a sheet. Sacrifice a sheet of film or use a blown exposure sheet to practice in daylight before trying with your hands in a changing bag. Also beware with older film holders the grooves on the side may be a little tight and make it a little more difficult to get the film in and out -- it varies with holder and use/abuse the holders have been through. It all becomes second nature after a while.

Wow, that Chamonix is a pretty camera. Is that wood?

A few other considerations: Metal vs. wood. If you are working in a studio or close to home it doesn't matter much but if this is for heavy landscape use -- in and out of bags and in backpacks consider a metal camera. I started out with a Zone VI which is a beautiful camera but it didnt hold up well to heavy duty use and became rickety -- I eventually tired of guessing the amount of sag I was going to get when tightening down some front tilt so I eventually switched to an Arca Swiss classic which is built like a tank and can withstand a lot of abuse.

Also, I'm not sure it was mentioned in the excellent posts above but you'll also need a light meter -- I used a Zone VI modified Pentax spotmeter but any meter should do. Bring along a small grey card to meter off.

Exposures: Keep careful track of what you are shooting and for important shots either bracket or shoot at the identical exposure and then develop one sheet and adjust the exposure through processing time if your over or under exposed. My old E-6 lab guy used to hate when I walked in with 2 dozen boxes of film and asked him to develop one and when the first batch was done we'd give exposure adjustments to the remaining sheets. Labs used to do this in 1/3 stop increments but I'm not sure if anyone offers this level of service anymore.

Cable releases -- Steve mentioned one per lens. If you can get a deal on these buy a dozen or more. I've left a trail of these darn things from here in Pa to California and back again

As others have mentioned wider than 90mm usually needs a bag bellow. They are a pita and can cause you to miss shots. Also, even though I have and used a 75mm without one on the Arca it was impossible on the Zone VI. And if you are using one of the wooden folding cameras they won't fold down with a bag bellows on -- you'll have to change back.

If you are going to be shooting outdoors use a dedicated dark cloth that has weights in the corners. Nothing worse than trying to set up a shot in the wind with your dark cloth flying all over the place.

A three lens setup is a good way to go -- my favorites were the 90, 120 and 210. I also liked the 360 but a racked out bellows in the wind didn't always work well.

Solid tripod head. The old Bogen 3047 head was great for 4x5 and you can probably pick up one cheap these days.

Enjoy!

Wonderful! Love it. I am just a bit north of their normal growing range and although you might see the odd one here or there, we don't have anything as cool as your pic.

There are other good 67 to k adapters that you could use -- Fotodiox makes a good one. As others have said though for one lens it probably doesnt pay. If you were picking up a few 67 lenses to use and there are a few great ones then it would definitely makes sense.

I got old and my 4x5 got to heavy. And the Pentax 67 wasn't much lighter. And don't get me started on the cost of film and processing ... hence full-frame digital.

If it hasnt been mentioned earlier in the thread some upgrades I'd like to see would be software based -- a focus stacking function, more options in multi-exposure mode so you could vary the exposures of the different images being merged, continued improvements to pixel shift.

Nice shot -- reminds me a little of some of the rock walls along the Buffalo River here in the states. The sky looks a llttle bit strange around the trees -- it looks like the darkening needs to be blended a little more uniformly into the trees.

The next lens I want on the roadmap

Zeiss made a series of lenses that had coatings optimized for transmission of IR -- I know they produced these in the Nikon mount and they were designated as ZF-IR. They did the 28, 50 and 85mm -- they are almost impossible to find. Quite a few lenses are fine at the wider apertures but will do the hotspot thing when stopping down, esp. beyond F8. Most of the modern Pentax lenses I've tested don't do well stopped down. The Pentax 67 lenses, on the other hand, are the best I've found so far for IR.

I'd love a wide angle tilt/shift like the Canon 17 but as a previous poster mentioned probably to specialized and would be pretty expensive. A lens optimized for IR would be cool but also to specialized. Does anyone know what lenses Pentax recommended for use with the KP IR body or did this body never actually happen?

Overall though I'd just be happy if the 21mm arrives soon and is reasonably priced.
