Limiteds - DA 21 or DA 70 as my next lens? As a treat to myself...

Here are a few examples of starbursts. To me that's one of the main perks of the SMC 21:

Even when the scene does not yield starbursts, it creates a wonderful glow around light sources:

Looking at those images makes me wonder why I sold mine...

Wait, what?

That review, sad to say, was done with a suboptimal lens. It does not showcase what the 40 LTD is capable of.

Wait, what?

Suffice to say, I respectfully disagree with everything written here.

I think the 21 is more versatile, the 70 is more of a specialized use. Oortraits and such. I use the 77 myself and love it, but it's not my most-used lens.

That being said, do get the SMC version of the 21. It's one of the two best lenses on the Pentax lineup for creating starbursts. I can dig up examples if you wish help to be convinced. I'm still looking for a FF lens capable of coming close to the 21 for this.

That 14g is almost assuredly the mount, nothing more. To use this to conclude that they are different lenses is, shall we say, a bit easy...

Carbon. It's making rounds across Canada for the moment, Canada Post took quite a convoluted route. I'll be able to give you a short opinion faster earlier than the publication of the eventual review.

Yep, I had seen that box. Didn't know if you referred to something else.

I'll be able to compare with the Sirui, features-wise. Regarding stability I do perform some tests, but I don't (nor does anyone I've seen, except for the guy at The Center Column) have the equipment to perform variation and torque / moment of inertia tests.

The box? Or the case?

If I may, it always helps to leave the asking price, it helps future sellers and buyers get a feel for a fair price. Selling price is even better, but that might be too personal; for some. The asking price is still useful.

The Peak Design Travel Tripod has been a long time coming... Its kickstarter campaign launched 10 months ago. All backers have now received their tripods, but general availability was still an unknown. I've been told that the tripod will be available from all major retailers, as well as the company's website, on April 7th.

I for one look forward to testing and reviewing this tripod which wants to go head-to-head with the best out there. It will be interesting to compare it with the popular Sirui T-025X. The unique design of the PD tripod certainly makes me curious.

Because someone says it on the internet does not make it true...

I'm reviewing / testing the D FA 70-210 right now, and apart from bokeh which is a letdown, it's hard to find big flaws with that lens.

:) I wouldn't say those are the most common ground for comparison.

These are excellent products, but out of the price range for most people, so less discussed. That's all.

That's also a bold statement. Driven by how one defines "performances".

The two probable points of improvement will probably be AF (mostly the silent thing) and aberrations, where indeed the 77 is somewhat lacking because of the design choices made at the time.

However, those design choices were there for a reason. The rendering capabilities of the 77, its bokeh, and moreover the transition from in-focus to out-of-focus, is what explain the 3D pop that the FA Limited have. Simply put, as a test bench equipment the 85 is sure to vastly outperform the 77. But as a creative tool? Not so obvious.

Having compared both, I agree. Still, having tested the D FA* 50, by "normal" lens of choice remains the FA43 to this day.

That's a much more sensible way of putting it, I think ;)

"Bought by mistake" always makes me laugh. The context makes sense but still ;)

These are different animals, how do you seem the Sigma replacing the Pentax?

In Canada, things have slowed down quite a lot. I don't know about otherr parts of the world.

I see Gitzo as very desirable tripods, but over budget for many people. The thing is they are probably as good as tripods can get, but the law of diminishing returns applies to this also. You can get products almost as good for a fraction of the price.

Getting back to the original point of the thread, I have three nice things coming my way:

-a 60mm cristal ball to experiment and crank up my photographic creativity

-a hip strap to complement my two Peak Design Everyday backpacks (regular and Zip). Expect to see it featured in upcoming reviews.

-a Peak Design Travel Tripod. Expect a review in the future. I look forward to testing it and seeing how its different shape impacts usability.

It should be popular but that's a bold statement, especially considering the existence of the FA77 and the existence of mainstream focal lengths focal lengths like 50.

Or maybe by "coveted" you mean "not purchased, but wished for"? In that case I agree, although the 200mm macro will be a strong contestant ;)

Confession game: how many lenses do you have? Why do you keep them? Which was let go?

I feel like I'm an imposter here, since I don't own that many lenses...

I currently own

FA20-35
DFA 28-105
DA* 60-250 (modified for full frame)
Vivitar cheapo 70-210 F4-F5.6 fully manual (worthless so I keep it)

FA43 Limited
M50 f1.4 (never gets used)
FA77 Limited
DFA 100 macro WR

The thing is, with all the lenses I get to test while performing reviews, my "LBA" is satiated without actually having to purchase all those lenses. For instance I'm currently testing the DFA 70-210 F4, and the Laowa 60mm ultra macro. Fine lenses to play with. Before that I had fun with the 10-17 fisheye. So I can explore and, sometimes, decide to keep a lens. For instance the jury is still out whetherr the DFA 70-210 ought to replace the 60-250.

You'd be better off with a marble flat and vertical high-precision height gauge. But that would still be a nightmare to do, the kind of things that specialized labs charge thousands of dollars to do ;)

By measuring the refractive index, you can perform a well-educated guess. But you'd need to know the geometrical properties of the lens element, from the previous point.

Feasible, but not by any amateur in his basement... I'm an optical designer by trade and apart from my time in university, I doubt I've had access to the required equipment to perform this kid of test.

Comparing representations of lens designs is not enough to make a valid assessment. These design schematics are not detailed enough, plus you lack the information about the type of glass, stray rays management, a ton of other elements.

Pentaxforums already has an article covering the type of questions you ask, detailing for each Pentax lens (and a few third-party I believe) the results when using an APS-C lens on full frame. I believe this thread would be redundant.

I see absolutely no reason to go with the 85 if you have the 77, except if you find something wrong with the 77. Heck, I have the 77 and 100 macro WR and sometimes the overlap makes me wonder which lens to use.

The 70-210 will give you different possibilities.

My main challenge was actually between English (2nd language) and Spanish. Some words have similarities but different meanings, like travel vs trabajar (work).

Mostly correct. I believe that, since there are about 25% French-speaking canadians, it's more likely that a Frenchie will speak English than the reverse. Though from my understanding many English-canadians place value in making sure their kids learn French in school.

I learned Spanish by going to an "international" school in high school. Two years of Spanish, plus one year of practise at lunchtime, and trying to use it when travelling. I can manage but I'm not fluent.

French and Spanish are a bit similar, but not as much as I'd wish for. There's still a lot to learn.

Good point. Zooming with your feet is harder then.

I'll try to evaluate the focus breathing of the 70-210 vs the 60-250.
