Well, the D FA* 85 has sort of been "announced":

But I get the feeling this is more of a "Hi folks, we're still alive and kicking" kind of thing.
Sadly, right now, that is actually useful information.

Interesting that it says "Ricoh will be the lead investor."

Makes you wonder what other sources, if any, will be buying in.

Actually, in the current situation, the Pentax mirrorless (K-01, Q7, etc.)
have got to be some of the safest cameras out there.

With all the framing done exclusively through the rear LCD,
there is no temptation to engage in risky behaviors
like bringing the camera up to your face. :)

Pentax Mirrorless?

The 645 mount has been downright drowsy since 2015 (35/3.5 FA to D FA upgrade.)

Unless a wide angle lens is retrofocus, which then might as well be K mount,
you're going to get poor perfomance at the edge of the frame.

If that was the goal, it failed. The KP is larger than the K5 in all three linear dimensions.

Really? Then why did they work so hard on articulating the K1 screen?
And why do they continue to give us "Composition Adjustment"?

How about a really compact MILC that leverages the improvements in BSI technology,
using a modern 1/1.7 sensor, and top quality lenses with their own internal leaf shutters? :)

The kit lens isn't the best in the range,
but it's fine at longer distances and shorter focal lengths.

Not yet, for the likes of us.

When enough people have made an order, that could be the day.
I have placed one.

Otherwise, don't expect it to happen.

Adorama has this item available for order:

The Speedbooster was initially offered in a Nikon mount,
which wasn't particularly helpful for Pentax users.

If enough people order this one,
Metabones may be motivated to actually produce it.
As of right now, it does have a manufacturer's item code (MB_SPPK-Q-BM1).

In the meantime, you can dream of converting your 100 mm macro
into a superfast tele with enough depth of field to be useful!

Q series.

I use the Q system as an expansion of my main camera
(KS-2 with DA Ltd 20-40 or K1 with D FA 28-105)
when I'm traveling or have limited space.

The basic kit is a pair of Q7 cameras,
one with the 06 tele and the other with the 08 wide angle zoom.

Normally, I use the bigger cameras when it's dark,
but the two-Q kit is good for casual walkaround on its own.

People who don't understand the Q system (that's almost everybody)
don't realize how the jello-beating leaf shutters
also let you shoot smoothly in low light at very low speeds,
compensating for the limitations of the 1/1.7 sensor.

Ricoh inherited the system from Hoya,
and with their marginal commitment to Pentax,
they weren't ready even to release the 09 macro,
just like they haven't renewed the 645 system.

The Q system got typecast into the "Japanese schoolgirl" market,
blinding all but a few to its fascinating capability of expanding the photographic space,
the way the original Leicas did almost 100 years ago.

Tokina, king of badge engineering

It's not that simple, as the formula changed along the way.
For example, the M has a flatter cemented join,
which supposedly makes it better at infinity.

And of course, the coatings have also changed with time.

Even if Tokinas have shared lens elements with Pentax,
the coatings have differed.

PC-Nikkor 28mm 3.5 shift lens adapted to k-mount

Does the Nikkor have built-in filters?

I have the Pentax A 28 mm shift, and am generally pleased with it,
except when the built-in filter, which I set to "Skylight",
catches some internal reflection and causes a color shift on a highlight.

Nikon are already far enough along to have abandoned an entire MILC format (1 inch).

But Ricoh are way ahead of them there,
they've now abandoned no less than three MILC formats (1/2.3, 1/1.7, and APS-C)!

That might be a necessary condition,
but it's certainly not sufficient,
as we found out with Ricoh's abandonment of the Q system.

Not just developing new equipment,
even bringing to market the 09 telephoto macro lens
that was all ready to go.

They went south a couple of years ago.

The "lens cap" on the last lens I bought from them
was as flimsy as the cap on a beaker of yoghurt,
and had allowed the front element to get scratched.

One of the strong points of the current-day Pentax (originally also Zeiss) K-mount
is that it can adapt M42 lenses so easily, designed for the exact same registration distance.

Just to set the record straight, Leitz was based in Wetzlar (Hessen), part of West Germany, not in Dresden.
And Contax wasn't a West German company, it was a Zeiss model name, in pre-Yashica days.

Interestingly, the "Pentax" M42 thread mount did originate with pre-war Zeiss in Jena.
And present day Zeiss are still offering M42 lenses:

With the rumored BSI sensor, that ain't necessarily so.

The tiny pixels in the Q system punch well above their weight,
thanks to the BSI technology.

The close-together markings give the depth of field at 40mm.
